Can IITM BS in Data Science students participate in ICPC?

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in participating in the ICPC but I'm not sure about my eligibility. My offline uni has 0 coding culture and the uni is prolly not even registered. So IITM is my only hope. My qns are:

1: Are students in the IITM BS in Data Science program eligible to represent IIT Madras in ICPC?

2: Has anyone from the BS program participated in ICPC before?

Thanks!

The degree is great. The loneliness isn't.

I genuinely like the IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Management program. Academically, I've learned a lot and I don't regret choosing it.

But one thing I wasn't prepared for was the isolation.

I tried applying for internships but couldn't land one. I go to the gym, swim, and stay active, yet I still struggle to build meaningful connections. In a regular college, you naturally make friends, work on projects together, and build a network. In an online degree, that part feels missing.

Anyone else in the IITM BS program (or any online degree) feels the same? How did you deal with the isolation and build a good network?

Is it realistically possible to raise my CGPA from 7.1 to around 8.0 by the end of the Diploma level?

Hi everyone, I recently completed the Diploma in Programming in the January term, and my current CGPA is 7.1

So far, I've completed only Machine Learning Foundations (MLF) from the Diploma in Data Science. In the current May term, I am taking MLT and BDM theory courses.

Assuming everything goes as planned, I'll complete my Diploma level by the end of this year before moving on to the BSc level next year.

My question is:

Is it realistically possible to bring my CGPA up to around 8.0 by the time I finish the Diploma level?

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has managed to significantly improve their CGPA during the Diploma stage, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. I'd also appreciate any advice on what kind of grades I'd need in the remaining courses to make this possible.

Thanks in advance! 🖤

Hello, I'm starting college soon and thinking of which degree to do for a robotics software engineer. I'm interested in automation. I want to build a system not just a humonoid robot but any system that is related to automation. And I tried ros2 and gazebo and I did find it interesting and also I find eps and microcontrollers interesting.

So, mostly I want to work on the software heavy side but some won't care if there are some circuits.

I can choose between Computer Engineer or Electronic Systems.

Here is the Electronic Systems syllabus: https://study.iitm.ac.in/es/academics.html#AC1

Now, by seeing this syllabus can anyone answer my question, should I do electronic systems or computer engineering.

Thanks for reading and I hope I'll get my answer.

Need Advice: Should I Pursue an Offline Degree Alongside IITM BS, or Focus Entirely on Skills & Portfolio?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from seniors or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I'm currently in the last term of the Foundation level of the IITM BS degree, pursuing it as a standalone student.

Alongside academics, I'm heavily focused on upskilling—I’m taking the Apna College Web Development course, actively building my frontend portfolio, and also doing a side gig that takes around 2–3 hours daily.

I'm now wondering whether I should also enroll in a regular offline degree (BCA, B.Sc., or B.Tech.) alongside the IITM BS.

Why I'm considering it:

  • I feel like I'm missing out on the traditional college experience, campus life, networking, clubs, and having an offline peer group.
  • A conventional offline degree might act as a safety net for HR filters during placements.

For those who have pursued dual degrees—or chose to stay with only the IITM BS:

  • How manageable was balancing an offline degree with IITM?
  • Did the offline degree actually provide any significant advantage during internships or placements?
  • If you had to choose again, would you still do both?
  • Or is it strategically better to stay standalone, dedicate that time to becoming really strong in Web Development, and build a portfolio that stands out?

I'd really appreciate any honest advice, reality checks, or personal experiences. Thanks in advance!

Suggestion needed regarding purchase of a new Laptop

I'm currently in diploma level. i might choose dlai theory next term, whether a laptop with dedicated gpu is required or not. if not, how much time it will take to train the models.

my current spec:

i3, 1tb hdd , 500 gb ssd (extended) , no dedicated gpu.

if it takes more training time in colab , im considering to buy a new one.

IIT MADRAS BS datascience and application

I have some questions and opinions about this degree I am a student who finished class 12 my only options are tier 3 college with branch btech cse or this iitm bs with bsc stat offline degree(offline college class is from 8.30 - 1.10)

  1. placements : are the placements like legit , like is there any manipulation does the average package include people who are in jobs , is placement cell and alumni network good

  2. Skill : I know for sure that this degree if not that promising in placements will give skills way better than an tier 3 college giving btech cse , I can do bsc stat in offline college and then also do iitm bs and can do Leetcode on the side right and with all this I think placement should be okay , but please tell your opinions on this

I also want to know that like isn't this atleast better than an tier engineering college like in an tier 3 college from experience from others i heard it's waste of time and no development in skill , atleast in iitm bs if we say like ohh there is no placement (which I hope is not true) atleast we get and develop skills and get interships ,

Also I heard many IIT ian's show hate towards this online degree due to behaviour of the students in this degree , if it is true please , understand that the not all the students are like this many want to achieve skills and placements instead of messing around , and yelling out loud that they are an IITian too which I think is super cringe.

Career advice needed: IITM BSDS + BCA/B.Sc?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a Foundational level student in the IITM BSDS program. Since I can't pursue B.Tech due to financial reasons, I'm planning to do an offline degree alongside the BS, preferably BCA, B.Sc. CS, B.Sc. IT, or B.Sc. Statistics.

Would this be a good combination for placements and long-term career growth? Will I be at a significant disadvantage compared to B.Tech graduates during placements or off-campus job hunting?

Also, which offline degree would you recommend pairing with the IITM BS, and why?

Thanks!

Is the IIT-M BS DS degree manageable with an offline mechanical engineering degree?

I'm gonna be starting clg this year from a t-3 clg in mechanical engineering. Since I'll go to Bangalore, I'll have opportunities for internships, networking and growth, etc.

My main aim is to get into a top German public uni for master's in a specialization that involves heavy math(i like math) and software. Will this degree help my profile "stand out" from other applicants or should I self-learn these topics and make projects, focus on clg clubs, research, etc?

My main concern is will I have enough time for extracurriculars like projects and clubs if i pursue both degrees or would it be better to take short term courses for any topic I wanna learn and then make 1-2 projects related to them.

Anyone who was in a similar situation, or can guide me through, any help would be appreciated.
