I just interviewed an IIT Madras student for an intern role, and it was painful. HR handed me a resume stamped with the insti logo, but the candidate collapsed on simple fundamentals. Asked the difference between mean and median? Blank stare. Overfitting? He rambled about neural networks. The CV was a wall of buzzwords like PyTorch, GenAI, Cloud with zero foundational math underneath.

As an alumnus, I am ashamed seeing such utter nonsense from students of IIT Madras.

If I get started in the upcoming september term and I take 4 courses per term, can I get this degree finished in 2.5 years? Also when will I get the main graduation certificate after finishing the degree? Do I get it soon after completing the last course or do I have to wait for convocation time?

I am a IITM student in BS in Data Science and Application in the foundation level. I completed five courses in five terms and I registered for three courses in this sixth term. I am not sure if I can pass in three courses, but I can definitely pass in one course. Do I need to pass in all three courses in this term I registered for? What happens if I don't pass in all of them?

My marks for Quiz 1 and Quiz 2:

Q1 Math = 97

Q2 Math = 81.3

Q1 Stats = 69

Q2 Stats = 62.5

How to improve? Seniors are saying stats2 is even more tough. I have already lost chance of S grade for total score for stats-1. Please advise

Hi everyone! I’m currently preparing for the IIT Madras BS DBMS OPPE and wanted some guidance from students/seniors who have already completed the course.

Could someone please clarify:

1. Up to which week is the DBMS OPPE syllabus? Is it specifically Week 2, Week 3 and Week 7, or has the syllabus/pattern changed recently?
2. What topics should I focus on most for the OPPE? Especially regarding SQL (W2/W3) and Python–PostgreSQL/database connectivity (W7).
3. What are the best resources for preparation apart from the IITM lectures/slides?
4. Are there any previous OPPE questions, mocks, GRPAs, GitHub repositories, or practice sets that you would strongly recommend?
5. If you've already taken DBMS, how difficult did you find the OPPE, and what would you recommend doing in the last 1–2 weeks before the exam?

I'd especially appreciate responses from people who have already completed DBMS and appeared for the OPPE, rather than general DBMS advice.

I'm currently in the May 2026 term of the IIT Madras Online BS in Data Science program. Today (August 16, 2026) is my final reattempt for the Qualifier Exam.

The official mail says if I fail, I'll have to "reapply in the next term" with full program fee and restart from Week 1.

My question:

Does "next term" mean September 2026 or January 2027?

Can I join September 2026 if I fail the Qualifier today, or do I have to wait until January 2027?

Also clarifying:

I understand that even if I pass the Qualifier today, I'll still have to redo Quiz-1, Quiz-2, and assignments for Weeks 1-4 when I join the September term

So passing vs failing today determines whether I start these redos in September 2026 or January 2027, right?

I'm in BS data science and applications. I gave quiz 1 for **English - I (**BSHS1001), Math-1 (BSMA1001), Stats-1 (BSMA1002) , and CT (BSCS1001) last month. Then i registered for 3 courses, i dropped English. Today, I gave quiz 2 for Math-1 (BSMA1001), Stats-1 (BSMA1002) , and CT (BSCS1001). My end term for the foundational level is in september now.

I would like to go ahead with the degree and complete the diploma as well. Today when i checked the eligibility for diploma, it said i need to complete all 8 courses. what are these 8 courses exactly? Also, does dropping english have any repercussions for me? Will I not be eligible for diploma now that I have dropped english and did not attempt english in Quiz 2?

Also, after clearing QUIZ 1, i received a mail saying what i need to do further, ad god the language was so complicated i couldnt understand anything. But i do remember there being a mention of exams for which i need to give the access of my laptop to the institute and record myself through a phone. When will those exams be conducted?

would really appreciate if someone could help me with this.

Want to prepare for end term very well but when I saw quizspace of end term I saw total marks was 200 but how is this possible?? And one more thing there is no single question match from pyq this time

Neet dropper, can't take another, Doing bsc Zoology with minor in Maths from a local college. (No BCA/BBA college nearby so)

General Category, Lower middle class.

Parents are asking to prep for Government exams those Banking, SSC , Railways,etc.

May be i can prep but if I end up not cracking any then..Ik its very competitive (I don't like GK and current affairs though).

If i follow my parents words —I will have no skills by the time I will graduate. I do know that any career in bio field is long route low income with uncertainty.

*****MBA is expensive and loan is not something I think I should take.

Got to know about IIT Madras BS data science course. I am quite interested tbh. I know its quite demanding and I am willing to put enough efforts and more if required.

But again the IT sector is unpredictable and saturated with continuous layoffs and this BS Degree is online*.

Its the best option i see for myself but self doubts is something that is stopping me to even talk about this with my parents.

What if i can't make into IT and even after doing all of it I'll end up to the same places i am today which is preparing for competitive government exams.

*See i don't need to attend my bsc Zoology college most of the days.

*I saw a nearby coaching who helps with government exams preparation where if i Join I'll have classes of 3 hours a day , 5 days a week , for 1 year. Its within 3 km from my home takes 15-20 minutes to reach there, total 40 minutes of travel.

Coming to suggestions i need.

Its just to be in the race so if i end up to again prep for gov exams I'll not have to start from scratch.

conclusion - do gov exam coaching for 1 year and leave after that and focus on BS.

2. Serious IIT Madras BS data science managing bsc Zoology (zoology i think won't be any barrier as I'll only study 2 morning each semester before practical and exams)

3. Standalone BS DS , as Standalone students get better internship and placement benifits then Dual degree.

* I am thinking If i go for BS DS, it will atleast take 4 years and I'll end my bsc Zoology in 3rd year itself. So the 4th year of BS I'll be 100% free.

4. Do BS and if you don't get good job , go for mtech vis gate da for better opportunities.

(Online degree student without any offline tech degree will face difficult in job hunt off-campus.)

Any senior, someone who is passout without any offline tech degree, what was your experience in finding jobs.

Please suggest what I should do. I’m very anxious about this. What if I don’t make it into anything and end up exactly where I am today? What if I work hard again and still fail?

Tomorrow is quiz 2 I didn't study much 😭, I wanna get little good marks just tell me how to!? Any good help? Link of yt video or anything..

STATS:55%

Im so confident that in tomorrow's quiz 2, my math score won't get past that lmao cuz i just started preparing...

So the question is

CAN I ENTIRELY SKIP DOING MATH TOMORROW AND SOLELY FOCUS ON DOING CT AND STATS??

IT WONT AFFECT ANY ELIGIBILITY FOR SHIT LIKE THAT RIGHT?? OR SHOULD I HAVE TO ATTEMPT IT MUST??

as far as i know, the grading pattern favours the highest total of both the quizzes... So any advice...???

Is 2026 and 2025 pyqs enough to understand the concepts? ;-;

Ok, so the thing is I am going to pursue BTech in CSE AI/ML from a tier 3 college (tier 1 in Maharashtra though), and along with this I want to do an online secondary degree either BS Data Science from IITM or BBA DBE from IIM BLR

Now a few things about me: since childhood, I have loved coding, computers, etc, enrolled for coding classes, did courses, etc but on the other hand, I have loved business and entrepreneurship. I grew up watching Shark Tank AUS/US, did some small business for quick money by myself

So now I am confused. I want to do both online degrees, but my parents won't allow both due to budget, plus they know I am taking up too much workload and won't be able to commit to all 3 and will overburden and stress myself... even I deep down know that even through i want to do all 3, I won't be able to manage

So therefore asking which degree will be the best for me. Also, I am not sure whether I will be on the product management side or the SDE side, but it will be one of the 2 and I'll be happy with either one of them

Do give guidance or career advice if you have any 😁

(P.S. I have gotten an offer letter from both colleges )

I am too confused rn like what should I do first my condition is I am a 12th pass student with PCM 60.5% in mht cet I score 74 percentile so this is not enough to get a good or decent btech college so I am thinking to do a BCA degree with a BS DEGREE of iITM first I thought doing this with a btech degree but it will be too complex I think so what should I do should I go for only offline btech Or BCA+BS

Senior plz help

So basically I have been studying for the Qualifier since the past month I did all Graded Assignments Week 1 - Week 4 , i did all pyqs from 2026 to 2023 from Quizpractice website . Yet I am scared for the Qualifier what else should I do? Is this enough? Can anyone tell me ? If I am missing something?

Err tbh I did all polynomial questions, did functions learnt onto into , did the L1 L2 sums , did the calculate the number of students who did all three of them type cardinality sums , did turning points , did SSE , did the calculate the value of a , did the -infinity +infinity sums , did relations , did area and perimeter from the points (1,2) (7,5) type sums , did quadratic equations, did slope and midpoint, yeah that's all and did R1 R2 relations and some polynomial graphs and learnt symmetric reflexive etc relations.

And statistics computational thinking and English are meh they are done ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅
