Question about HSA contributions
So I’ve called SSA, Medicare and IRS. SSA and Medicare reps very kind but directed me to IRS number which has the most frustrating tele support….only to get to where there are no representatives. I’ve search the IRS website and still not convinced I have the “right” answer.
Context: turn 65 in January of 2027 and plan to work through the month and retire February 1, 2027. I would delay enrolling in Medicare until February.
Question: can I contribute to my HSA in January since I will not be enrolled in Medicare yet? My company gives employees an HSA incentive at the beginning of the year and I don’t want to throw that away unless there is no way around it? This is relating to look back timing, tax penalty if I get it wrong, etc.
Everyone I talk to gives me a different answer and a different recommendation so here I am on REDDIT seeking the truth! Ha!
