Hi everyone,
I'm an international Master's student at TH Wildau, and I'm a bit confused about what happens after I submit my thesis.
Here is my situation:
My Master's thesis submission deadline is 19 July 2026.
The summer semester ends on 31 August 2026.
My German residence permit also expires on 31 August 2026.
I currently live in a student apartment provided by my university.
The Examination Office has informed me that if my thesis defense (Kolloquium) takes place before 31 August, I do not need to re-register for the Winter Semester. However, if the defense is in September, I must re-register and pay the semester contribution.
My questions are:
If I submit my thesis in July but my defense is after 31 August, how does the residence permit extension work? Can the Ausländerbehörde extend my student residence permit until my defense, or do I need to re-register first?
If I finish my studies before 31 August, can I apply directly for the 18-month job-seeker residence permit, or do I first need to receive my final degree certificate?
Since my residence permit expires on 31 August, what happens if my defense or degree completion is delayed beyond that date? Has anyone been in a similar situation?
As I live in university student accommodation, would I be required to move out immediately after completing my studies, or is there usually a grace period while waiting for my residence permit extension or job-seeker permit?
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through a similar situation or knows how this is usually handled in Germany.
Thank you!
