Convert to SVG / Trace Bitmap Help

Convert to SVG / Trace Bitmap Help

I'm trying to convert this PNG to an all black SVG and I'm getting all kinds of little artifacts around the edges. Should I use more or less smoothing? More or fewer passes? Something else I'm missing?

Printing orientation is shown wrong, and printing outputs nothing

I'm not sure where the problem originates, but this printer driver (Windows 11, "Canon Generic Plus UFR II") works OK with other applications.

Attempting to print from Inkscape doesn't work. The printer (a big Canon printer/copier), makes noise like it's about to feed a sheet but then does nothing. Its log actually shows "success" for each job, but the page count is zero.

The Print dialog shows "Portrait" and "Landscape" for orientation but those labels are backward for the icons shown.

Going into the driver's own dialog under "more settings" revealed that the paper size was set to "custom," but setting it to Letter didn't result in a successful print.

Anybody?

How do I stop my outlines from stretching in one direction when I am stretching a shape?

When I am scaling an image in one direction, the relative thickness stretches too, but I really need the outline to be 1mm wide regardless of its orientation. How do I do that?

Need help with deepnest.io

I am working on figuring out nesting as I am making large quantities of stuffed animals for my small business and need good lay plans. This has been bothering me a lot.
I use Inkscape for the patterns as I find it to be the easiest software for this kind of thing and I make sure to clean it up as much as possible before moving it to deepnest. However for a lot of these patterns, when I import the svg files into deepnest, it adds so many extra boxes and rectangles into it.

I have had this issue before and I have previously fixed it. But now it’s happening and I have no idea why.

When I first had this problem, I had gone to outline view, ungrounded everything, un-clipped everything, and deleted everything extra that shouldn’t be there. And that fixed the issue.

But now it’s doing it again. There’s nothing that appears in outline view, there are no extra nodes, no extra paths, I am stumped, I swear I have tried everything.

One thing that comes to mind as I am writing this is that I do have an ink cut extension but I am not sure if that should even change anything in my file.

I do not want to change softwares as this is the only open source nesting software that actually does what I want, is simple, and free. I have tried other ones but they all suck in comparison. I also don’t want to spend money on this kind of thing

Inkscape Flatpak is very slow do things

I have about 70 apps all flatpak, inkscape is the only one I have issues with. It is slow to save a 780 mb file, switching tabs in the sidebar takes several seconds - the gui seems to freeze, and when saving this file several times a popup appears saying that inkscape is not responding.

What can I do to get better response times? Should I just use the .deb version? None of the other flatpaks have issues like this including gimp.

In case it matters:

  • Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
  • Wayland.
  • Intel® Core™ i7-14700 × 28
  • 32GB RAM (2 x DDR5 DIMM 5600MHz Corsair)
  • 1TB hard disc with over 400GB free (Samsung 990 PRO (NVMe PCIe 4.0))
  • AMD Radeon RX 7600 | 8GB GDDR6

I have flat seal installed but have never really used it as I don't know what all the settings do really and didn't want to make things worse.

I can use several apps at the same time, like OBS, handbrake, Kdenlive, Browser with videos playing and play games on steam all at once without any issues, but inkscape - even when the only app running - is slow to do everything. Small files don't exhibit these issues. 780MB doesn't seem that large to me.

Midmarkers between nodes

Apologies if this is a silly question…

I have a diagram that has a fairly long Spiro path in it, with three nodes: Start, middle, end. I intentionally set this up with the middle node placed where I want a midmarker (arrow) to appear, about a third of the way along the path.

However, when I add the midmarker, two arrows appear: One at my node, and one halfway between it and the end node (so pretty equally dividing the path). I can see this isn’t an anomaly, as when I drag my middle node around a third arrow can appear between it and the start node.

I want just one node, and didn’t expect this. Looking around, most indications I see are that these midmarkers should only be on nodes, which isn’t happening here.

Is this expected? Any easy work-around?

Parallel Lines is the a better way

Parallel Lines - is there a better way?

Right now I draw these white and black lines manually. It would be nice if I could draw one path and have Inkscape generate the pair of lines automatically for me. I tried the Offset Path effect but it had two issues - I didn't leave my original path and it seems (?) to only allow keeping the original stroke color - I need the offset one to have its own stroke color. So maybe Offset isn't the right fit? or I missed something?

Any other suggestions from you Inkscape experts? Maybe something with Pattern Along path? where I have two "dots"? one back and one white? Not sure if that is a good idea either.

(sorry for typo in title)

How do I center the 0,0 coordinate to the middle of my SVG?

I'm using inkscape to prepare logos for import into FreeCAD for parametric 3d modeling. I'm by no means an inkscape expert or graphic designer

Why I need to do this, is because having the origin point not be the center of my SVG makes it a pain in the ass to center it in my CAD designs. I know theres an option to set the origin to be bottom left of the page, but i need it in the center of my SVG. Or at least to the center of the page and then a way to center my SVG to the middle of the page as well.

Pls help w inkstitch

Hi!! I’m trying to basically make a dot with a satin stitch border using inkstitch, (I want the whole circle to be about 5/8” in diameter in real life)
I’m super new to this and losing my mind it won’t close all the way so I’m left with a gap on the border every time. Please help!! There’s not much online that I can find specifically to this
Thank you!!

It takes more than 8 MINUTES to select the text objects in a file. Workaround?

We have to provide schematics in technical documentation. They come from TurboCAD originally.

Schematics have lots of labels. After importing them, we need to change the font and adjust the size of the text.

A larger schematic has about 2600 pieces of text. Selecting them at once should not be a problem for even a modest modern computer. But it's a huge problem in Inkscape.

I have all the text on a single layer. I've also tried putting it into a group. In neither case can I select the parent layer or group and then set the font and size. It just doesn't work. So you have to select the first text object, then scroll, scroll, scroll to the last and Shift-click it. And then go get some coffee... oh wait, no, you have to wait a bit and then click the title bar of the app window, or Inkscape will do nothing forever (on Windows 11). If you click the app-window title bar, it turns white with "not responding" and now you can go get coffee.

Eventually the text objects will be highlighted. Now you can change attributes of them, which works relatively quickly. But heaven forbid you click erroneously and upset your selection (for example, on that square next to the font drop-down, which is dedicated to selecting all text that has the font shown in the drop-down).

For comparison, Affinity performs the same action on the same file in well under a second.

As someone reminded me below, you can use the "select objects of same type" as a workaround for this case. But that won't work if you have layers with lots of items of mixed type. And it reveals a serious underlying problem, because selecting by type selects the same 2600 objects in a fraction of a second. Selecting directly takes minutes!

No keyboard shortcuts and backspace not deleting after update (mac)

I just updated to the latest stable version v 1.4.4 on mac, and now I have some pretty serious issues.

  1. There are no shortcuts (at all) anymore - see screenshots. Even when I try to assign them manually, they dont work. And trying to switch to adobe standard or inkscape standard, does nothing. There are no shortcuts anywhere.

  2. My backspace doesn't delete the item I've selected.

Has anyone experienced this and found a solution?
