The Savannah Bananas

After taking the Melrose exit and arriving in Iowa City around 5:30, traffic was surprisingly light. We were lucky to have a parking pass for the Field House ramp near the hospital. By the time we got to Finkbine, traffic was as heavy as you would expect for game day. It took us all of 30 minutes to get from Finkbine to the hospital campus. The sidewalks lined with people walking toward the stadium. Cars attempting to turn into driveways to park or tailgate. Humans darting across the street whenever they felt like it to cross. We made it to our assigned parking eventually.

A quick walk from the ramp to the stadium, the entrance gate was smooth, no waiting. But once we were in Kinnick the chaos started. A thunderstorm was heading right for us. The staff announced a lightning delay and asked all the fans to exit their seats and head to the shelter of the concourse. The problem is there wasn’t enough space for everyone. The 90° heat, thousands of bodies packed in like sardines, you couldn’t move. We were stuck in one spot near the entrance for twenty minutes watching police and EMS workers make paths to care for those who had fainted from heat exhaustion.

Our party of five split up. Hannah and I were going to head for our seats while the other three waited in line for merchandise. Moving from the outdoor space near the entrance into the concourse, the heat got more intense. I dragged Hannah toward our tunnel, weaving through the masses. Just as we made it to the tunnel, the storm hit. Hundreds more people started filtering out of the stands toward the already full concourse. With nowhere to go, some had to stand in the rain.

We found a nice spot against the wall in the tunnel and that’s where we waited for the next two hours. Every thirty minutes or so, a crowd of people would head back to the bleachers, only to retreat to shelter when the next rainstorm hit. It was like seeing distant relatives. We made some friends in our makeshift home. A family to the right of us had three little boys. Every break in the crowd the father and I would poke our heads into the field to get cell reception, talk about the weather and wonder if they were going to cancel. Another family to the left of us with three little girls. The father, complaining about “missing work for this.” Two teenage girls, very contently watching World Cup Soccer on their phones as we waited. A mother with her two daughters playing rock paper scissors.

Finally our friends rejoined us, wet, but bearing gifts. A golden banana finger, beers, and food. They had battled the masses and won. Shortly after, the rain was finished for the night and we shuffled to our seats. A chilly evening was a stark contrast from the sweltering afternoon we had endured. Bananaball was upon us. Dancing introductions from the team members, guest appearances from former Hawkeye football players and the lead singer of “The Fray.” It was a night to remember.

It wasn’t just a baseball game, it was a performance spectacle with some baseball sprinkled in. The crowd was wild for it, cheering and chanting along, rainy woes forgotten. This was my first time at Kinnick stadium and it almost made me want to brave a Hawkeye game.

First ever garage sale and not a single person is walking around my street today lol

I just find this so funny. I regularly see people walking around our neighborhood/our specific street all the time. Like to the point that I find it frustrating some days. But the ONE TIME we have a garage sale, I don't see a soul! Even my neighbors who have kids I regularly see outside are nowhere. Like did y'all party too hard yesterday? 😂

Fireworks from my Roof

I didn't go downtown last night so I climbed on my roof to see if I could see them. Turns out I had a perfect window thru the trees.

Northside Fireworks?

I just got back from the downtown fireworks which I watched from the parking garage by the UIHC location on Market. While I was there I could also see some sort of fireworks display from the north. Does anyone know if there’s another professional fireworks display off that way or were these just ambitious amateurs?

WHAT IS WITH THE TICKS

Just moved from Texas. Pulled one off my scalp after walking hickory hill last week. Being a wooded area I wasn’t shocked, figured I’d just put on extra bug spray next time. Haven’t been back out as I’ve been busy with onboarding at the hospital. Self checks pretty much daily since. Only other outdoor stuff was taking my dog outside and hot tub. Pulled a new one off of my scalp probably 10 minutes ago

I’m a physician and tick-borne illness is heavily emphasized on board exams so the fear is real

Emergency vets that are open today?

Does anyone know of any emergency vets that are open today? Iowa city, Cedar Rapids, Davenport even. My cat just started stumbling around this morning and can’t seem to keep his balance and I’m very worried. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Is This Your Cat? Friendly White Cat Found

I ran across this very friendly cat walking along the road (Rochester). It seemed well fed and groomed, so I didnt take it because it could live nearby.

If this is your cat and its lost let me know and I'll go back and try to find it.

Johnson County Jail Facts (.org)

jailfacts.org

Follow-up to my post 'Johnson County Deserves Better (.org)' from yesterday.

This is a very in-depth look at many aspects of the process that is currently leading to the bond referendum to build a new county jail. I haven't even looked through everything on here yet and can't respond to questions. I'm just putting this out there as additional evidence for those of you are that are skeptical about a new jail, but are interested in being curious and informed.

If you feel like this is biased or skewed, I would encourage you to look at the Methodology, Sources and About tabs. They answer a lot of questions like "Where's your evidence to back this up?" and "Why are you purposely spreading disinformation?".

Again, this is not my website. I did not make it (nor could I). I'm posting it here to add more to the conversation than the Sheriff's perspective, which is what is being echoed by most local media.

Greyhound bus

I am fairly new here. Just wanted to know if the Greyhound buses are safe to travel from Des Moines to Iowa City? Should I be aware of something before travelling?

Johnson County Deserves Better (.org)

Johnson County Deserves Better

Do you think spending $100 million community dollars on a new jail is the best use of that money? Do you think prioritizing a place to imprison your neighbors who have possession of marijuana or OWI charges for one night out of an abundance of caution is the most important thing we need to do? Do you think it makes sense to place this new jail directly next door to a public monument to "never forget" our community's horrific past of caging people?

I'm not directly involved with this movement and there are much more thoughtful and well-cited claims on the homepage of the website, but I wanted to put this out there for folks who, like me, don't share Kunkel's fever dream of a jail.

Join/support this group or at least educate yourself on the issue and don't take the common arguments - current jail gonna fall down! current jail is inhumane! current jail necessitates we pay other jails exorbitant prices! current jail not big enuff! - at face value. Those arguments don't justify a $100 million jail, especially one that doesn't propose any changes that benefit anyone other than JoCo Sheriff Department employees.

New to the area so wondering best spots on campus to view??

Is the big open space in front of IMU a good spot? On the hill in front of Capital?

How is the view from Big Grove?

Kinnick Question

Sorry for the dumb question, I've never been. We're in 128. Looking at pictures and it looks like several sections don't have handrails on stairs leading up to seats, is that accurate?

Gonna have to try for a last minute switch to ada seating at the banana ball games for my parents tonight if so.
