aespa's 2024 run was insane. “Supernova,” “Armageddon,” and “Whiplash” put them in a league of their own, and “Supernova” became their first No. 1 on Korea's Circle Digital Chart.
Their biggest problem is consistency. When aespa gets the right song, they're incredible. But their discography has always been hit-or-miss.
“Supernova” was the perfect aespa song. Weird, catchy, futuristic, experimental, but still accessible. That's the balance they should protect.
“Whiplash” worked, but it was much simpler. Some listeners loved the club sound, while others felt the song lacked the impact of “Supernova.”
Their newer direction is controversial. Recent releases have received criticism for feeling less distinctive than their 2024 peak.
Their concept used to be a major advantage. The KWANGYA/metaverse lore made them feel completely different from other groups. They've gradually separated the music from the lore, which makes the group easier to understand but arguably less unique.
Karina and Winter are huge stan attractors, but Giselle and Ningning are essential to the group's overall sound. Reducing aespa to just Karina/Winter is missing what makes the group work.
Their biggest enemy is actually themselves. After “Supernova,” the standard became ridiculously high. Even a decent comeback now gets judged against one of K-pop's biggest recent hits.
