Is it possible to pickup USD from western union in Kyiv?

Hi all,

I need to send some money to Kyiv. I can send it either with a us bank or cash from the usa. The issue is picking it up in Kyiv. I know it is simple when picking it up as UAH but I wonder if there is a place that will give USD instead for a small fee.

Argentinian looking to contact locals

Hi! I'm from Argentina and I'll be in Kyiv from september 8 till september 14. I'm looking for locals to hang out, get recomendations, etc. Here in Argentina I'm a lawyer, always been interested in your country and specially Kyiv. My ukrainian is extremelly basic, though I know the cyrilic alphabet and I'm trying to learn more as I get closer to be there. I speak English and of course rioplatense Spanish, if anyone is interested in this particular dialect. Thanks a lot! Слава Україні!

March for Fedorov reinstatement held in Kyiv as protests enter second month

People gathered in Kyiv on Aug. 16 for a protest march demanding the reinstatement of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, more than a month after his unexpected dismissal. At 7 p.m., a couple of thousand demonstrators assembled at Kyiv’s Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People, Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground reported.

The march aims to "remind the president of the importance of dialogue between the authorities and society, as well as of the fact that the president himself must bear responsibility for the consequences of all questionable personnel decisions," said Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a war veteran and one of the protest's organizers.

Fedorov, a popular ex-minister praised for his reforms and spearheading the expansion of Ukraine's drone capabilities, was fired by President Volodymyr Zelensky in a chaotic government reshuffle in mid-July.

Protesters have been rallying in Kyiv and other cities since then, demanding that Zelensky reinstate Fedorov.

Kyiv after sunset / Київ після заходу сонця

Kyiv after sunset /

A summer evening on the Dnipro River. The sun has already disappeared below the horizon, leaving a warm golden glow over Kyiv. The city skyline, the Motherland Monument, and a thin crescent Moon stand out against the fading evening sky.

The Dnipro is almost perfectly still, reflecting the last light of the day, while the riverbank slowly disappears into twilight.

One of those quiet moments when Kyiv feels completely different.

Looking for a basement room for a month in Kyiv.

Hello,

I need to spend a month in Kyiv but unfortunately I'm on sleep medication which means I won't be able to shelter at night if there is a bad attack.

I think it will ne easier to simply rent a room in a basement if possible. I can't seem to find any filter that declares which floor I'd like to stay in so its kinda hard to search.

Id appreciate any help. City center would be best but us beggars can't be choosers!

Thank you

My friend Jordan from Barbados was a foreign fighter and died, this was erected in his memory, and I only know it’s in Maiden Square. Does anyone know where this is specifically or have any information on it? I’m in US and have no idea. I didn’t take picture

Locally Owned Shops & Restaurants

Hello there!

My boyfriend and I will be in Kyiv for a few days and are looking to help support the local economy. I would love suggestions for any shops (of any kind), cafes, restaurants, bars etc.

I am plus sized so if recommending a clothing store please consider that. I would love suggestions on what to buy that is unique to Kyiv or Ukraine (clothes, foods, random items).

Really excited to see your wonderful city!

дякую

How 5 years of full-scale war changed dating red flags in Ukraine

Five years into Russia’s full-scale war, dating in Ukraine doesn’t look like it used to. It’s no longer about being funny or ambitious, but whether you are actually living in the same reality.

The Kyiv Independent’s video creator, Nastia Kasinchuk, asked our team about their biggest red flags on dates right now. From listening to Russian music to dodging shelters or using enlistment as hype, members of our newsroom share what makes or breaks a potential relationship.

QUESTION: What happened to Ramen vs Marketing?

In 2024 I spent 7 months working for the NGO Magic Food Army under Chef Zhenya Mykhailenko.

Fell in love with his Ramen shops.

I'm returning in Octoberish to join the war effort proper. Recently though I went through some of Ramen vs Marketing's locations and noticed one of my favorite locations is closed permanently (Vadyma Hetmana St, 10/37а, Kyiv, Ukraine, 02000), and the shop I used to live near is temporarily closed (Pavla Tychyny Ave, 20б, Kyiv, Ukraine, 02002).

I also reached out to a friend over Instagram who worked there and saw he had either joined or was drafted into the military but has yet to respond to me.

Was wondering is a local Kyivian could tell me what going on?

Any and all information is welcome. I made many friends there and I am very concerned for their well being

How did you actually get to Kyiv? Tell me about the journey 👇

Hey everyone! Are there people here who traveled to Kyiv from Europe or from across any border? I'm curious how you actually got here, because there are no flights, and I understand that makes it super complicated.

For those of you who've made the trip: how did you do it? Which route did you take — Warsaw, Kraków, Budapest, somewhere else? Train, bus, horses (kidding), a mix? And what was hard about it? What caught you off guard? What information did you wish you'd had and just couldn't find anywhere?

I'm asking because we want to put together a proper, detailed guide with real advice. So the more honest your answer, the better!

And if you're planning the trip right now and feeling stuck, drop your questions too. Someone may be through it and will help you.

So: how did you get to Kyiv, and what would you tell someone doing it for the first time? 👇
