Hallo allemaal, ik ga over een paar weken met vrienden naar Leiden om terrasjes te pakken, te gaan eten en te shoppen. Wij geven niets om kleding en de grote ketens maar we zijn juist altijd op zoek naar die leuke (zelfstandige) niche winkeltjes. Winkeltjes waar je echt ff lekker rond kan neuzen.

Wat zijn jouw leukste tips voor toffe winkels mbt bordspellen, muziek, curiosa, contemporary, stripwinkels, modelbouw/gunpla, boekenwinkels etc?

Hey everyone! I came to the Netherlands (I am non-EU) for a master's in Astronomy at Leiden and graduated last year. I have been looking for a PhD or an industry job, but haven't had any success. I have been on the orientation year permit, but it is about to run out in September, so I need a work and residence permit to continue living here (which will be the GVVA, if I am correct). In the meantime, I have been working at McDonald's to sustain myself. However, from my first day, they said they couldn't arrange a work permit for me once my orientation year ended. Thus, I need to find another job that can, so that I can continue living here and continue my search. I need some advice regarding that as follows -

1. Is it even feasible to obtain a work permit (in terms of the requirements) on a minimum wage or store job? If so, what should I keep in mind?
2. Do you know of any such places/companies in/around Leiden or the Randstad that can sponsor a work permit for me?
3. If there is a place willing to sponsor a work permit for me but doesn't give me enough hours, can I also work at a different place at the same time (say, McDonald's) to earn enough?

A bit more info about me, if that can be helpful - firstly, I don't speak Dutch fluently (lacking confidence to speak for one), but do understand quite a lot (enough to get the customers at work, for example). I am also trying my best to learn it on my own using books and free online resources. My housing situation is also fine, as my landlord is willing to let me stay in my place here in Leiden (I already have the new contract too).

Please let me know if any of you know anything about this or have any leads on places.

I am going to be moving to Leiden Netherlands next year. As a 60-year-old, it’s a scary, exciting big step. I also know there will be some bumps in the road and NO PLACE is perfect.

However, when I have visited, it just feels like home. I think it’s just the most fantastic place.

Over the next year, I’m trying to collect insider recommendations and tips so that I can hopefully have a smoother transition.

Whenever I have moved to a new city, it’s always been helpful for me to have some quality recommendations ahead of time so that I can not feel like I’m starting from complete scratch.

I have an EU and US citizenship and already have my housing arranged. So, I would love local recommendations for enjoying my daily life.

Best GP practices:

This is a big one because I’m coming from a system. That is very different and very fluid at the gatekeeper level so I’m used to being able to get appointments very quickly and I know that that will not be the case.

Eye Doctor:

I wear contact lenses and backup glasses. Do you get a referral through your GP or are there separate vision centers that you go to?

Dentists:

Is this part of your monthly health fee? Do you need a referral or are there dentist that you contact directly?

Veterinarian/Pet Boarding/Pet Food:

As a golden retriever owner, I’m particularly interested in good veterinarians, boarding if I travel, and where you buy your food versus ordering online?

Favorite Restaurants:

I like a variety of food, but I’m not fancy. I’ll also be on a budget as a retired person so nothing to outlandish in price.

Hallo Leidenaars (denk ik). Een vriend van mij, mijn hond en ik willen graag naar Leiden verhuizen zo snel mogelijk. Wij huren allebei op het moment maar zijn na 2 jaar niet blij met waar we huren.
Ik probeer online te kijken maar het is een beetje moeilijk want de ene website brengt me weer naar de ander en echt reageren wordt moeilijk.
Wat zijn jullie tips, tricks of gwn feitjes over hoe wij zo snel mogelijk een huis kunnen vinden.
We kunnen een huur van 1300 met garantie betalen maar willen wel 2 slaapkamers gezien we wel onze eigen space willen hebben.
Kennen jullie mensen die toevallig mensen zoekt voor onderhuur stuur graag een dm!.
Alles is welkom want ik hoop zelf binnen 2 maanden te kunnen verhuizen (ben bang dat dit niet haalbaar gaat zijn)

I’m a 23F living in Leiden and I’m thinking of going to the Pitbull concert at GelreDome in Arnhem on 15 July. I haven’t bought my ticket yet because I’d rather not go alone.
Is any girl here already planning to go and wouldn’t mind me joining? Or would anyone like to go together? We could travel from Leiden together (or meet there), grab a drink beforehand( maybe) , and enjoy the concert!

Every city seems to have a season where it feels most like itself. Some places come alive in summer, while others seem more charming in autumn or winter.

I'm curious which season people think suits Leiden best and what makes it stand out during that time of year.

De partijen ChristenUnie, SVL, CDA, VVD en PRO willen samen de formatiegesprekken hervatten om te komen tot een nieuw stadsbestuur voor Leiden. De vijf partijen willen een nieuwe coalitie vormen in Leiden, dat maken de fracties bekend in een gezamenlijke brief aan de gemeenteraad. De aankondiging volgt nadat eerdere formatie tussen PRO, CDA en D66 strandde. Volgens de vijf partijen is het belangrijk dat er snel een stabiel bestuur komt om de maatschappelijke en financiële uitdagingen van de stad aan te pakken.

Na het mislukken van de eerste formatie nodigden de formateurs, op verzoek van PRO en CDA, verschillende fracties uit voor verkennende gesprekken. Vertegenwoordigers van onder meer Partij Sleutelstad, VVD, Partij voor de Dieren, SVL, ChristenUnie, Volt en SP namen daaraan deel. De gesprekken vonden plaats op 25 en 26 juni en verliepen volgens de betrokken partijen in een positieve en constructieve sfeer. Daarna voerden PRO en CDA ook informele vervolggesprekken met verschillende partijen, buiten de formateurs om.

Volgens ChristenUnie, SVL, CDA, VVD en PRO hebben die gesprekken geleid tot voldoende vertrouwen om samen de volgende stap te zetten. De partijen spreken van een brede basis om een coalitie te vormen en willen op 9 juli tijdens het raadsdebat hun voornemen toelichten. Ook willen zij dan met de gemeenteraad in gesprek over het vervolg van de formatie, het opstellen van een beleidsakkoord en de vorming van een nieuw college.

but I'm desparate. Because of a miscommunication with friends, I am flying into Amsterdam Saturday and taking the train to Leiden. We are supposed to be staying there with them in the Ibis hotel until the 8th. Unfortunately, with the miscommunication I just found out that we do not have a room booked, and the *entire* city seems to be full.

I've checked Hotels.com, Booking.com, VRBO, AirB&B, Trip.com, and I'm out of options.

Can anyone recommend another route to find a hotel, B&B, apartment stay, flophouse or large park bench? 😄

Our friends got their room at the Ibis, but it's tiny and there isn't even enough room for the two of us to sleep on the floor.

I'm grateful for any solid recommendations Leiden folks can provide.

I'm trying to plan summer holidays for my family, with plans to visit in early August. A friend recommended we spend a few days in Leiden. It looks very charming and I'm excited to include it in our plans. We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids ages 10 & 12).

Leiden University libraries are going to remain open for fewer hours and days starting next week. I have my thesis due soon and would love to study at a spot I can find a monitor at, preferably for free. Any recommendations?
