My college friend who is working at Texas Instruments diagnosed and repaired a failing GPU which was sold to corporate last year , at chip level — MATS/MODS pointed to the B0 VRAM IC and probably saved me almost a lakh.

Workstation was having GPU issues ( we got to know after removing the display from PC) and I was genuinely worried that the GPU or complete motherboard would need replacement. On a machine like this, that could potentially have turned into a bill of lakh.

Instead of declaring the whole GPU dead, my friend went into proper board-level diagnosis. He used NVIDIA MATS/MODS to test the GPU and VRAM, and the results pointed towards the B0 memory subpartition.

From what I understand, B0 corresponds to one of the VRAM ICs around the GPU. He opened the machine up, pulled the motherboard, located the B0 memory IC and removed and then worked on that chip instead of replacing the entire GPU.

That was the part that impressed me the most. A display/GPU fault that looked like it could require an insanely expensive replacement was narrowed down to one specific memory section through actual diagnostics.

Before this I assumed that once a workstation GPU started giving display problems, especially a soldered one, you were basically done and had to replace the whole board. Seeing MATS/MODS identify an individual VRAM channel changed my perspective completely.

Obviously B0 showing errors doesn't always mean the VRAM IC itself is definitely dead — it can apparently also be the BGA connection, memory controller, power — but being able to narrow it down this far before throwing parts at the machine is pretty amazing.

After the chip-level repair and testing, the display issue was sorted.

That really made me feel how little i know and there are genuinely levels and my man stood up for me , thanks to him and really put a thought into my head how specialized knowledge sets you apart in the industry and dude been doing all this since 2018 , grateful to him 🙏
