LHS vs. GHS - Looking for advice on which high school is best for an analytical, musical student?

We are trying to decide between Livermore High School (LHS) and Granada High School (GHS) for my son, and I’d love some firsthand perspectives from parents, students, or alumni who have been through either school.

On paper, both look great, but I know the day-to-day culture and vibes can be totally different. I’m trying to figure out which environment will be the best fit for his specific personality and interests.

To give you some context, he’s a smart, driven kid who thrives in structured environments and has a strong analytical side. He is very involved in competitive chess, and he is also a dedicated classical musician who plays both the violin and cello. He isn't into sports, so we are purely looking at the academic, music, and STEM culture.

From what I’ve gathered so far:

  • LHS seems to have incredible hands-on academic programs like the Green Engineering Academy and a very strong, tight-knit community feel.
  • GHS seems to be a massive music powerhouse with a highly energetic, competitive atmosphere and big AP tracks.

Given his focus on classical music, chess, and academics, I'd love to know:

  1. The Music Scene: I know Granada gets a lot of hype for its marching band, but how do the schools compare specifically for string players, orchestra, and symphonic music?
  2. The Social Vibe: Does either school have a more active chess club, or just a better natural environment where analytical, focused kids easily find their crew?
  3. The Academic Culture: How is the balance between the competitive AP environment at Granada vs. the academy/project-based tracks at Livermore for a self-motivated student?

Would love to hear any pros, cons, or "wish I knew before choosing" insights you have. Thanks in advance for the help!

Uncle Yu’s

Can anyone give any guidance if they are kid friendly? We have an almost 3 year old and a 4 month old and were invited to an early dinner there. Haven’t been since we have had kids and I can’t get thru to the restaurant via phone to ask them. Thank you!

Private Swim Instructor

Hi there! Not sure if this is the right place to post this. We are new to the area and looking for a private swim instructor to teach our shy 3 year old how to swim. We have a pool in our backyard and would like him to learn swim basics/safety for peace of mind. We’ve tried group lessons when he was younger and felt the progress was too slow. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

BLS renewal in Livermore anyone have a spot they use

Card expired last month, need to get it renewed before my next shift cycle. I'm at a clinic out here in Livermore and AHA is the only thing they accept.

I know the HeartCode hybrid format exists. Just need to know if there's somewhere local doing it or if I'm driving to Pleasanton again.

School district?

Those of you that moved from an average school district to then into schools in Livermore or Pleasanton area. Was it worth it? What stuck out the most compared to other districts? We have young kids and trying to figure out if we can stay and supplement or if it’s worth the move long term.

Thanks

Livermore traffic on 580 and Isabel Ave. - Possible Suicide Jumper - May 8, 2026

Thought I'd share this photo of why traffic is being held up on 580 and Isabel Ave. 580 eastbound was backed up for miles on end. With several people outside of their cars or on top of their cars probably wondering what is going on.

Well here is the answer.

Otherwise, no comments or opinions on my part, just sharing a photo.

"I like people watching me be an idiot" ~ Ashley Padilla

Thought you guys would get a kick out of her interview from our very niche San Francisco East Bay Magazine: Diablo - The Magazine of the East Bay. And yes we do very much claim her.

What questions do you want to ask the candidates who are filling Swalwell’s seat (CA-14)?

To my knowledge, the ONLY forum that we’ll have to hear from all CA-14 congressional primary candidates is happening over Zoom next Saturday, May 16th, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Anyone who registers in advance can submit questions ahead of time, and I’m happy to submit any questions you have on your behalf & report back with their answers!

I’m personally already pretty confident that I’m voting for Matt Ortega, but I want to help provide answers for my fellow voters in a race where we’re not getting half as much time & information as we deserve.

Also, please register to watch the forum yourself if you’ve got some free time next Saturday:

Room Available

Any ladies have internships at the lab that need a room to rent? You would have your own bathroom as well. We’re two girls with 7 cats though lol. 1200/month. 10 mins from lab.

Traveling for work and will have my spouse with me. Any recs for dates?

Hi everyone, I’m traveling to the area in early June (Monday - Wednesday) and will have my spouse with me. Originally I was told I’d be in San Francisco but recently found out the details and it derailed all of our potential plans.

Any recommendations for a couple in their mid 30s that enjoys art museums, good food, fun interactive events/classes, music and dancing?

Considering taking a job a LLNL

I've been offered a position at LLNL and am looking at the housing and day care landscape.
I'd be coming from New Mexico and I'm trying to decide if a 20% raise would even come close to covering the cost of living increase.

What happened to the Totem Pole?

Heya! I grew up in Livermore, though moved overseas a decade or so ago. I was feeling nostalgic and wandering around town in google maps, only to see that the totem pole in centennial park was missing. Looking for news about it, it looks like it was removed for restoration in 2021.

I can't find any more recent articles about it - 5 years seems like a good long while for restoration. Anyone have any more info? And more importantly, what does this mean for the sewers!? Is the curse lifted, or somehow deepened by this new development?

Edit: Someone posted a link hidden in a Nextdoor comment thread, I believe from Mayor Marchand (not sure how to confirm that on Nextdoor, first time using it):

> Totem poles typically have a life expectancy of around 50 years. The Livermore pole was over 50 years old and was showing its age. In fact, the beak and wings had fallen off and its structural integrity had been compromised over the years of exposure to the weather and pest infestation.
> Sometimes, historically significant poles by master carvers in the Pacific Northwest are recreated. However, the Livermore pole was carved by a member of the Chippewa tribe, which has no totem pole tradition. Similarly, the Miwok and Ohlone tribes, which lived in our region, have no totem pole tradition and built no permanent structures. Tlingit and Haida tribes, which do have a totem pole tradition, didn’t live here. Concerns had also been expressed that designs were copied from a much revered Tlingit carver without permission.
> > California law regarding public art is explicit in that there can be no alterations or modifications to a piece of public art without the expressed permission of the artist. Fifteen years ago, I had suggested some conservation efforts on the pole. The artist would not participate unless he was paid thousands of dollars as “a consultant” to come back to Livermore. The leadership of the Tlingit and Haida tribes also requested that the pole not be replaced. > > The pole was taken down in 2021 and is in storage. It is my understanding that because of its weakened condition and cultural misappropriation, the pole will not be replaced. > Meanwhile, there are recreations of Ohlone structures at the East Bay Regional Parks Coyote Hills Recreation Area in Fremont.
