LHS vs. GHS - Looking for advice on which high school is best for an analytical, musical student?
We are trying to decide between Livermore High School (LHS) and Granada High School (GHS) for my son, and I’d love some firsthand perspectives from parents, students, or alumni who have been through either school.
On paper, both look great, but I know the day-to-day culture and vibes can be totally different. I’m trying to figure out which environment will be the best fit for his specific personality and interests.
To give you some context, he’s a smart, driven kid who thrives in structured environments and has a strong analytical side. He is very involved in competitive chess, and he is also a dedicated classical musician who plays both the violin and cello. He isn't into sports, so we are purely looking at the academic, music, and STEM culture.
From what I’ve gathered so far:
- LHS seems to have incredible hands-on academic programs like the Green Engineering Academy and a very strong, tight-knit community feel.
- GHS seems to be a massive music powerhouse with a highly energetic, competitive atmosphere and big AP tracks.
Given his focus on classical music, chess, and academics, I'd love to know:
- The Music Scene: I know Granada gets a lot of hype for its marching band, but how do the schools compare specifically for string players, orchestra, and symphonic music?
- The Social Vibe: Does either school have a more active chess club, or just a better natural environment where analytical, focused kids easily find their crew?
- The Academic Culture: How is the balance between the competitive AP environment at Granada vs. the academy/project-based tracks at Livermore for a self-motivated student?
Would love to hear any pros, cons, or "wish I knew before choosing" insights you have. Thanks in advance for the help!
