Does anyone know or have sources for the argument that allegedly happened a few weeks before the murder that led to both Lizzie and Emma leaving town?

Some accounts say that even upon returning to Fall River, Lizzie stayed in a boarding house for 4 days before finally returning to the residence. Emma had been visiting friends out of town for two weeks and only returned after hearing of the murders. What, if anything, happened to cause both of them to leave and Lizzie to allegedly not want to stay in the home even upon her return? Is this just unconfirmed rumor that has circulated over the years?
