Show to Books Transition

I am currently rewatching the show with my friend (it's her first time watching it) and she seems interested in reading the books. I would highly recommend her start with book 1 but she doesn't read much and likes fast-paced thrillers, so I'm afraid she will start reading book 1 and quickly get bored as the plot is the same as the show. As a result, I'm afraid she'll just stop reading the books altogether, which is such a shame because they are so much fun to read!

Long story short, after we finish the show I think she should just start where the show left off with book 3.

Is there any other crucial information from books 1 or 2 I need to tell her about for a smoother transition from the show to the books? I already plan to tell her about Lucy's upbringing (she has a much better relationship with her family & her family is large) & that in the books George is blonde.

Is Surreal Estate series similar to Lockwood & Co.?

I randomly found this show on my suggestions list. From its poster, it's giving a bit of L&C vibe but not many people have actually watched it.

I'm really searching for the Lucy-Anthony-George dynamics😭

Question about a phrase in Chapter 17 (spoilers for Book 2)

Minor spoilers for Book 2, Chapter 17.

I'm a bit confused by something Lockwood says before they head to the Bickerstaff house:

«"Well, it's that time of the afternoon. I'm going to stick a sword into a straw woman. Then I'm off to rest. If half the stories we've heard about this house are true, it's going to be an active night."»

I don't really understand what "stick a sword into a straw woman" means. Is it a British idiom, a historical or cultural reference, or just an expression I'm unfamiliar with?

If it gets explained later in the series, please just let me know that it does. I don't want any spoilers beyond this point. Thanks!

Lockwood & Co. × Splatoon 3

Idk if this even has any place here but oh well.

I've been playing Splatoon for several years by now, and I've always enjoyed trying to cosplay characters within the game's limitations.

Recently, Lockwood & Co. has become a bit of an obsession for me all over again, and I've now tried to make George (my beloved), Lockwood, Lucy, and even Holly as Inklings. (No Octoling hair matched any of theirs ○_○)

And so, here we are.

I was wondering if anyone else enjoyed both and, if so, if they'd have a go as well. (Note: I'm trying to get Retro Specs/Sennyu Specs and the Lumberjack Shirt for George but I just can't find them yet ;~;)

Met a Fellow Fan in the (Somewhat) Wild

I had a meeting today with my disability support person, and she brought along one of the women she works with (she’s about a few years older than me). We were discussing books and shows we liked and I mentioned L&C and she immediately went “Omg!!! I LOVE that show!! I really need to get the books!!”

My jaw actually hit the floor and I was so excited to meet someone else who has seen the show at the very least!!! 😭🩷 I’ve been a fan since the beginning of this series (read it when it released to the US as a kid, bought it at a Scholastic Fair) and am so happy to see people are STILL discovering it. It brings much joy to my heart. 🩷

A few lost opportunities for slight improvement

I just finished the whole series (in a week's time). I liked it somewhat, but at the same time I see that I was so not the target audience for it. I prefer my urban fantasy a bit more complex, but that's me. Still, I think it could benefit from a few small variations on the original as an alternative for those craving more drama. Not criticizing, just exploring my own thoughts))) Spoilers ahead!

>!First, I think having more than just one group of protagonists would be interesting. It would be fun if that dark figure they met in book 4 weren't just another Rotwell agency employee stirring up the ghosts for research, but some rogue researcher who tried luring ghosts into the portal to lock them there as a way to solve a problem, and it backfired, but provided useful insight.!<

>!Second, in book five when the group is escaping to the other side to avoid being killed in their own house, I think the portal opened too easily. I think they should have struggled a bit, and at the last moment Jessicas's ghost should have finally appeared to save the day and contribute somehow to opening that portal. It was mentioned multiple times that the energy in her room is strong but she never appeared. It would create a dramatic scene and also give Lockwood some kind of closure in terms of his never ending guilt about her death. !<

>!Third, I think Marissa was quite obvious and cliche-y as a villain with all her evil monologues. A little tweak to add some depth to her would be to reveal that she wasn't actually in her right mind all this time because when she met Ezekiel she didn't just listen to him and collaborated of her own volition, instead she got effectively ghost-locked as many other characters in the series did. It just makes sense that she did, because she was so young when she found Ezekiel's bracelet. Nobody can be that evil to get rid of their own child and then the grand child as well. I think after the bracelet was destroyed she should have come to her senses and voluntarily let go of her granddaughter's body in a sobby way. !<

>!In addition to the above, just a couple of moments:!<

>!Lucy was working on her connection with ghosts to try and help them somehow, but that line of development basically ended nowhere. Not sure what was the purpose of that if it wasn't eventually used other than to create additional friction between characters.!<

>!I see mentions of churches, priests, and souls yet it the role of religion in the Problem is unknown. Traditionally the ghosts are dealt through churches yet in Lockwood's universe it is not the case and religion is never involved. Just curious.!<
