Walkway along Chicago River (North of Belmont) Fenced off
Hello,
Theres a portion of the river walkway north of belmont ave (west side) fenced off. I did call the zoning department to confirm that the walkway was in the park district area (hence public area).
To confirm, its the walkway going south near Eden and Chamberlain University.
I would like to get the walkway open again. The riverwalk is one of the main reasons I decided to stay in Avondale. The sign says "reopens in Spring 2026", but it is obv well past Spring
311 directed me to the park district but there was no option to speak to an operator.
They also put up fencing along the walkway that made it harder to go around the fence.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance
Edit: I am getting downvoted a bit so I'm going to clarify. I think its reasonable to want to know when a project in a public park district (according to the representative I called from zoning), everything is so expensive, i would like a green space I can walk and run in before winter hits.
I will verify if I should follow up with the park district or the HOA. I might just go to the alderman tho
Thank you!
Edit 2: Not sure why people keep saying im going to harass the HOA, i was going to go to the alderman anyway. A brief conversation to ask about a project which again involve a public walkway (even if they own it) (whether it is to the alderman or the HOA) does not count as harassment. It is a enquiry, a conversation, to ask "hey how is the project going? Any idea when its going to be completed? If its going to be completed next year could you please update the sign?"
Someone below linked this https://gisapps.chicago.gov/gisimages/zoning_pds/PD651.pdf but the date on the letter is 02/03/2025. It states in the letter "this minor change is valid for 12 months from the date of the letter unless etc....". Not sure if theres an updated document. Construction is probably delayed becoz of the terrible weather.
I just wanna know when I can use the walkway man, im not going to spam call the HOA and i dnt have time for that. Im just going to go talk to my alderman and have a conversation 😭, i work a 9-5 with 45-50 hour weeks, i just wanna walk along the river and want info on when/if its gg to reopen 😭
