The lean, green adventure machine without whom there couldnt be Mario Brothers, the plumber Luigi first greeted audiences in 1983's Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch where the brothers worked in a bottling plant and moved crates between each other. Then he made his slightly more memorable, and first green clothed, appearance in the Arcade machine Mario Bros.
Since then he has gone on with his brother to play sports, to race karts, to save kingdoms and face his greatest fear, ghosts, in the genuinely wonderful Luigi's Mansion subseries.
Also I just realised Mr L from Paper Mario was accidentally put in there, cant imaging why he'd be in a post about Luigi...
