My “MicroSteam” up and running in the hotel.

The adhoc 10.5” IPS display and modified aftermarket MS Surface Go BT keyboard gives me the option of using a display or my XREAL glasses with tiny MinisForum EM680*. Much better performing than a MS Surface Go and with the ability to run FSR 4.1.1 and XEFG I can get between 40-60fps Quality setting in the recent AAA games I have tried (like RE9 and Death Stranding 2). The KDE desktop is close to the latest build and frankly has many features WIndows should adopt like a much better System tool and decent app repository. For most of my development needs, and what is not there, can be downloaded since my open-source tools and apps have different lInux version for easy install (sometimes a single click in Dolphin (which could do a better job with network connections to SMB servers).

I got my refurbished 32GB EM680 for $275, for $350. You could get a EM780 which has an iGPU 780M. I had posted about some time ago and did not act on upgrading to the EM780 and they sold out of the refurbished versions. Not sure if they even sell a retail 780M version anymore, but I think it was hovering around $600-$700 the last time I looked. I had really hoped they would make a Strix Point version of this with it much better energy management system then the earlier APUs.

If you are listening MiniForum, how about it?

Minisforum V3 attempt fix or sell?

Recently bought a used minisforum v3 and after a few months (if that) it died at a battery level in the upper 40s.. Anyway, it no longer charges BUT when its plugged in for a long time it will get to the windows repair screen before promptly shutting off. After that it'll only get to the now ironically frustrating "more than we you see".

If you unplug the device it won't do anything at all. Solid black and unresponsive. Seems like a battery issue to me.

Minisforum support stopped responding after I said it was out of warranty.

I'd like to fix it, or sell it to my buddy - he offered me 300usd. What would you do?

Can I change the PCIe generation in the BIOS on BD895i SE Mini ITX motherboard?

I haven't bought the BD895i SE Mini ITX motherboard yet, but I'm looking to install it in a case with a PCIe 4.0 riser, connected to a PCIe 5.0 GPU. I've heard this configuration (PCIe 5.0 on motherboard, PCIe 5.0 GPU, connected via PCIe 4.0 riser) causes issues.

I'm not sure if I want to change the riser straight away as I need to do more research on the right one to get (and it's hard when I don't have any of the parts).

So is it possible to change the generation in the bios?

Can the MS-02 25gbe networking be disabled to save power, without disabling the NVME slots?

I'm considering getting one of these, but I only (currently) need 10gbe networking. However I -do- need the extra NVME slots.

I'd like to make the machine as efficient as possible, so if that means disabling the 25gbe network card (and just use the 10gbe port with an sfp adapter) then so be it. As I believe the 25gbe has really poor idle power draw for some reason?

However if it means losing the NVME slots then thats a really bad trade off.

Got my G1 today now a question

The computer fits in the cabinet of my entertainment center. How much trouble am I asking for putting it inside? It's on the floor next to the TV right now. The only holes in the cabinet are for cable passthrough.

A Newby to NAS (Miniforum N5 Air)

Hello everyone,

I am looking to setup this Miniforum N5 Air
I probably went overkill on the Ram (got 2x32gb)

I thought about running the apps and OS on a nvme and have 2 hdds with 4tb as storage.

I theory I also have 2 more m.2 ssds in my pc that I could use if it makes sense for the set up.

I want to build a family and friends NAS storage that has all data with remote access with speed. I want to have the group admin family friends and guests. With friends having access if I toggle it on or off. And guests having access for a limited time.

My question is how do I start.
Do I use unraid, truenas or the native OS? - and why?
And how should I set up my drives?
The current m2 ssd hast 1tb
I have 2 more 2tb m.2ssd
2x4tb ironwolf

Thanks for the help. I am kinda lost in the ChatGPT pit and feel like I paralysis and stuck with a direction

MS-02 advantages over an AI 395 based minipc?

Im seriously considering upgrading my current 8845hs based homelab setup with something a bit beefier.

I already have 64gb of ECC sodimm memory, and 5x nvme drives. I need 10gbe sfp networking.

The MS-02 appealed because it should have good performance and cooling, and covers all the bases. The 25gbe sfp seems like it has a power efficiency issue (?) But I could disable it and use the 10gbe port. 4x nvme slots is enough, I can sell my 5th drive.

However, assuming I can sell my ECC sodimms, apparently for about £500 per stick, that would put the strip 395 units with 64gb soldered ram down to about £1300, only £250 more than the ms-02.

I would lose the ability to add a gpu, but id gain the 395 gpu which is already probably better than most gpu options that would fit in my budget like the B50. It also seems to draw a fair bit less power.

Is there anything im missing? Are there any performance benefits to the ms-02 over 395 based systems?

G1 owners

I'm looking to purchase one in the next few weeks, the only kinda negatives I've seen are on noise and temps

Personally I won't be doing a crazy amount of AAA Gaming id be looking for games I can't get on console.

So with that in mind, if you have one can I ask what's it like for noise and temps on say AA games or indie titles and maybe emulation?

Anyone turn one of these into a steam machine?

I already have a minisforum PC, specifically the hx80g, and it more than fulfills the minimal gaming I currently do on PC. But I am thinking of the future and with consoles seemingly pushing towards digital only unless they reverse the decision I will be going PC. I still want a console like experience but the price/performance comparison of the steam machine is lacking horribly.

Has anyone turned one of these PC's into a steam machine with steam OS?

If you have

Was the setup terribly difficult?

How has your experience with it been since you did so?

G1 pro

So like I'm sure many are, the Steam machine announcement has me looking for an alternative living room PC.

This looks like a decent alternative.

I'm planning on installing Steam App and just booting to big picture.

I know nothing about the company but this subreddit doesn't seem to be enamored with them.

Should I purchase? My needs are not crazy, I'm a casual to mid level gamer.

Thanks.

Is minisforum like apple? I see NO DISCOUNT on Prime Day

I am waiting like shit for the ms-02 to go down to 999 EUR again, but they did not even try to put discount on european amazon this year. So they think they are like Apple and dont need new users?

Need help connecting RX 9070 XT to Legion Go via Minisforum DEG2

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to connect a Sapphire/AMD RX 9070 XT to my Lenovo Legion Go using a Minisforum DEG2 eGPU dock and a be quiet! Pure Power 13 M PSU.
Current setup:
Legion Go → DEG2 via USB4
RX 9070 XT installed in DEG2
PSU connected to GPU and DEG2
USB compatibility/extended USB support enabled in BIOS
Tried booting with the Legion Go powered off and then connecting
Tried reconnecting after Windows boot
Symptoms:
When I connect USB4, the GPU fans briefly spin up and then stop.
The DEG2 appears in Device Manager as a SCSI/storage device, but the RX 9070 XT does not appear under Display Adapters.
No AMD GPU is detected in Device Manager.
No external display output.
Questions:
Is it normal for the RX 9070 XT fans to spin briefly and then stop?
Should the DEG2 itself appear somewhere specific in Device Manager when working correctly?
Are there any BIOS settings on the Legion Go besides USB compatibility that need to be enabled?
Has anyone successfully used an RX 9070 XT with a DEG2 and Legion Go over USB4?
Could this be a PSU power cabling issue even though the GPU briefly powers on?
Any troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if screenshots of Device Manager, BIOS settings, or cabling would help.
Thanks!

Can I use the MS-S1 Max as a Steam Machine alternative?

Steam Machine pre-order emails are being sent out to lucky individuals from today and sadly I’m on a waitlist and missed out
So I am wondering if I could use the MS-S1 Max as a more powerful alternative. Valve says SteamOS can be installed on any AMD system …
Would installing SteamOS on the MS-S1 Max work?
Would it be more powerful than the Steam Machine?

Steam Machine specs:
CPU: Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C / 12T
GPU: Semi-custom AMD RDNA3 28CUs
16GB DDR5 + 8GB GDDR6 VRAM
512GB NVMe SSD, microSD card slot
Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Gigabit ethernet
