BlueLine One — DIY Bluetooth OBD gauge/CAN Bus display project for the ND Miata

I’ve been quietly working on something new for the ND Miata community: BlueLine One.

It’s a compact round gauge/display built around a 1.75” AMOLED touchscreen and Bluetooth OBD data. My original plan was just to make a small E85 info display, because I wanted to convert to E85 fuel but once I started building it, the project turned into a full custom gauge system.

The current prototype can show RPM, speed, battery voltage, coolant temp, intake air temp, throttle %, airflow, estimated MPG, and multiple gauge layouts, including a 4-in-1 screen and a chronograph-style watch screen.

The TPMS screen is currently only a placeholder. From what I’ve found so far, TPMS data is not available through standard OBD on the ND2, so that feature does not work at the moment. But I’ll be testing TPMS on my gen4 Mazda 3 soon. More to come.

It currently works with the LELink² BLE OBD-II adapter and the Waveshare ESP32-S3 1.75” round AMOLED display.

My goal is to make this friendly for DIY builders. I’m releasing the Arduino C++ code on GitHub, the 3D model files on MakerWorld, and a full materials list below so others can build their own, test it, remix it, and improve it.

For now, this is still a prototype and early tester project. I’m mainly looking for feedback from other ND owners.

Parts I’m currently using:

LELink² BLE OBD-II adapter

Waveshare ESP32-S3 1.75” AMOLED round touch display

6cm ultra-slim 90-degree USB-C extension cable

M2 x 6mm flat head screws

ASA and/or PETG-CF/PETG-HF filament

I put together a short under 3-minute preview video showing where the project is currently at.

Note. I have to reprint the mount as it’s drooping down, the screws are not holding up on the side. This Texas heat is really taking a beating on this gauge mount. I was going to print in ASA but I would not get the 3D effect pattern. So I might reprint in PETG-CF but I think I need longer screws and the only other screws I have that small are m3x10. I wanted to keep the project cost down by reusing the same m2x6 screws.

Currently I have this connected up USB-C with a USB-A power bank. I’m in the process of adding additional USB ports that would supply at minimum 5v 2a power to the waveshare Amoled device to operate effectively.

But I’d love some feedback: what would you want to see on a small gauge like this in your ND?

Drain leaks

Anyone familiar with this issue on the ND? Trying to diagnose what might be causing it.

Basically, water is leaking at the drain filter even though the drainage seems to be unclogged and water is seemingly flowing out fine underneath the car.

DIY MagSafe + NATO rail

Hi! Wanted to share something I made over the weekend. Not sure what I’ll use the other ball mount for but had my action cam in mind.

I’ve had to sell my ND due to needing room for a child. So I bought a Subaru BRZ/GR86. Some interesting observations and realizations in favor of the MX5 and the community.

I’ve come to realise a few things not even associated with the car itself. The Mazda is a more sophisticate luxuries machine, the BRZ/Gr86 is a boy racer toy. I used to get called a hairdresser now I get asked why I’m driving a 17year olds car. The forums and drivers are young, immature and wanna be racers (mostly), by contrast we are friendly bunch, we wave to other Miata’s and leave love notes. The aftermarket in the other car is fragmented there isn’t one place, one standout company or product. What I liked about the Miata is that it had a set of enthusiast company’s that made great products. Overall I regret leaving my Miata but needed the extra seats and thought this would replace it. It does not…if only for the Miata community. So long

2016 MX5 ND Exhaust Suggestions

Hi, I'm looking for a different exhaust for my MX-5 ND and wanted some recommendations. I daily it to work and back, and want something chill and not boy racer so quit at low RPMs. I'm in the UK and would prefer it to be under 700 or 800 GBP (i will be installing it myself). Any info would be good thanks.

Do people prefer a twin or quad exhaust on the ND?

I believe the NC came with a twin exhaust as a standard which in my opinion looks nicer than the stock ND one

Do you think quad exhaust looks a bit too much for the ND?

ND Hood Issue

After a long gap, I will soon be in the market for another MX-5, which will be my fifth overall after an NB, NC PRHT, and a couple of early NDs (ND1).

Should I go for a soft top, one concern I have is the fault where the inner lining became detached from the hood.

This was a big enough problem in my second example that it drooped down partially obscuring the rear window.

Was this fault ever fixed with a redesign? For reference I’m not currently searching anything older than 2022 registration date (so late build ND2).
