Workout options in Madrid

Hey everyone,

I will be coming to Madrid and will be staying with my friend who lives in the city. I’m a pretty active person and would like to keep up with strength training / pilates / yoga for at least a couple of days during my stay. I’m not sure what would be the best option for me here, are there any programs like Classpass or gyms with trials that you might recommend? I’m open to different suggestions, but would like some options that are not super expensive.

Thanks!

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

First time solo travel

Hi everyone!

I'll be visiting Madrid for a couple of days next week, and it'll be my first time travelling solo. I'm planning to make the most of my days, but I don't really want to go out alone at night, especially as a solo female traveller. Do you have any recommendations for things I shouldn't miss?

Also, are there any hostels where it's easy to meet other travellers? I'd love to socialize a bit and maybe experience the movida with a group rather than by myself.

Any tips for a first-time solo traveller in Madrid would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Madrid July weather

Hello Madrid! I'm visiting next week and putting together my itinerary.

With the current temperatures, what hours are okay to be outside walking around, and what hours are just too hot to handle?

I’d like to plan museums/indoor stuff for the worst heat and save outdoor activities for when it’s tolerable.

Any tips from locals would be super helpful. Thank you!

Killing time at MAD

Land in Madrid at 8am and need to wait at the airport for a few hours for a friend to arrive. After passport control - is there a coffee place or lounge that I can sit in while I wait?

Recommendations on accommodation

Hi, my partner and I are planning on visiting Madrid in early September. We would like recommendations for an area and accommodation (nice roof top pool) that has a variety of tapas bars and is lively in the evening. We are both in our late 30s.

Doing Laundry in Madrid

You wouldn't imagine this would even rate a topic, but as you'll see, it turns out to be a little involved. I hope you find the information here helpful.

Laundromats are plentiful in Madrid, but in many cases, the washing machines automatically dispenses detergent into your load. This would be a welcome convenience and economy except that this detergent is invariably scented. I mean, heavily scented.

(This appears to involve a legitimate cultural difference; in the US, we've moved away from scented anything, where in Madrid, finding unscented detergent is a project.)

So when you're ready to do your laundry, do this:

  • At the nearest Carrefour market, buy baby detergent. Baby detergent is the only unscented detergent I was able to find.
  • Take your load, and the detergent, to a wash & fold business, and ask the proprietor specifically to use your detergent with your load.

Wash & fold outfits are everywhere, and they are very, very cheap. I used one called Tintorería & Lavandería Ballesta 8, and it was just what I needed.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone arrived at Barajas from the US in the past few weeks?

I´ve only traveled to other Schengen zone countries, so I haven´t gone through customs from non-EU countries since they rolled out the new EES system. We are picking up friends there at the end of the month and wondering how much time to estimate for them to deplane and make it through customs and baggage.

First time in Madrid!

Hey guys! My partner and I are planning our first holiday together, and my first holiday in 20 years! We are staying in a hostel very close to Puerta del Sol, and we'll be there from a Sunday to Thursday next month.

I'm doing research on what to do while we are there, and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice!

Here are some things we love:

- vegan food (there seems to be a lot of good choices in the area we are staying but if anyone knows any hidden gems let me know!)

- markets

- art/craft activities

- historic buildings

- museums

- nature and wildlife

- active activities

I'd really appreciate some recommendations!

Thanks :)

Any hotel to stay solo ?

Hi everyone, sorry if it is a stupid question or if it was already asked.

I’m coming to Madrid for F1 in September, and I will be alone. I was wondering if you knew a hotel where I could stay alone, with a private room and a private shower.

Budget isn’t much of an issue, but I’d like to be close to the metro if possible.

It will be my first time traveling alone so if you have any tips too I’ll gladly take them !!

Thank you so much :)

Madrid Metro - is it contactless now?

I'm trying to figure out what I need to know about the Metro when I'm there in July. Our group is two adults and two children under 10. Just trying to figure out if I use an app buy a ticket, do I use a physical card, can I pass the card between the people in my group? We will probably only take a few trips on the Metro. I saw that contactless turnstiles opened at the beginning of June.

Non-touristy activities in Madrid

Helloo, I'm going to Madrid in the end of August for 3-4 days. What are some non-touristy things to do in the city?

I would like to shop from some local brands and boutiques, maybe watch a flamenco show. But in general I'd love for some input on what to do other than the churches/gardens and palace etc.

Calling all foodies in Madrid

I’m planning an offsite in Madrid for a leadership team of around 10 people during the last week of August. So looking for great dinner spots, ideally places that feel a bit special, with really good food and atmosphere. Any hidden gems or underrated places are very welcome, but classic “must-visit” spots are also appreciated.

Open to different styles (Spanish, modern tapas, fine dining, etc.), but ideally somewhere suitable for conversation and group dining. One thing I’m a bit concerned about is August closures, so recommendations for places that are usually open during summer would be especially helpful. Hit me!
