Harlan has ruined me for others!!
Malevolent was the first serial podcast I listened to. Now that I’ve finished it, I can’t find any others that hold my attention 😭
Loved the hallway chase scene
((Took a social media break and might have forgotten I had reddit))
I got my first tattoo a couple weeks ago!
The first time I've heard the phrase was from the podcast. It's been a really powerful source of comfort when it feels like the worlds about to come crashing down around me. I've been wanting to get some tattoos done for a while now and I'm so happy with how it turned out!
Podcast recs
I know this probably gets asked a lot so I apologize.
I’m not a podcast person, usually. I have LOVED both TMA and Mal. Looking for something similar if anyone has suggestions?
Bonus points for romance vibes as a subplot
TX Ren Faire King In Yellow
Hopefully this is allowed! Husband and I went to the Scarborough Renaissance Faire in Waxahachie, TX today. While we walked through the fields we encountered a real-life King In Yellow cosplay! If by some chance the kid’s parents (or kid if you’re old enough I couldn’t tell) see this - know you made both my and my husband’s day! We had zero doubt who you were and it was so cool to see your costume of him!!!
Final thoughts on Malevolent
I did not have the patience to come back here every episode to yap about this series so now that i'm done, might as well give my general review.
Recency bias aside, i really enjoyed it. It's a very unique show and though i will stand by my first impression which was not very good at all, i see why it is so special and why people like it so much. Seasons 1 and 2 are so repetitive and though i understand the way this show is made and why it is the way it is, the length of each episode still got exhausting to listen through a lot of times. But it does get better and i'm glad i pushed through.
Season 4 was my favourite but season 2 had my favourite finale.
Malevolent has one of the most fun roster of support characters and antagonists i've seen in a while, all of them were so much fun and had me genuinely so excited whenever i heard them. Shout out to Oscar, Kellin and the Butcher.
The characters are all very well writen, it has a lot of great emotional moments. The character development for John and Arthur is undeniably the best part of the show, seeing these two go from despising each other and trying to separate to being so close that they finally get that and still choose to be together trully is beautiful. Jon's arc, the themes of humanity and grief are some of my favourite parts of the show as well.
The themes/leassons are not revolutionary by any means but they work and tie up nicely at the end.
All of that said, I don't know if that's a controversial opinion, but i don't think Arthur has that strong of a personality for a protagonist? Not sure how to explain it, but that's part of the reason s4 is my favourite since it's when we get to see more of him actually interacting with people and it gets a lot better from that point as well.
This is more of a personal opinion/pet peeve than actual criticism of the show, but the characters (specially the eldritch horrors) cuss a bit too much for my liking. It gets kinda silly. And there is no running away from it, i find the writing to be incredibly corny sometimes. A few scenes had me literally rolling my eyes.
A personal 7/10 podcast in my honest opinion.
Manager vs Kayne type shit
I can't believe i'm on the final season, it feels like yesterday i started this show.
What’s you’re guys favourite malevolent quote?
Gotta be honest idk what mine is there’s to many good ones probably either Invictus being recited to Yellow or John’s Eulogy.
Should I keep listening?
So I got into this podcast recently and was absolutely enthralled. I love the story, and the horror was so good it had me tearing up in places, but what I loved most was the dynamic between Arthur and John. That brings me to my issue.
I finished season 2 and listened to the Coda, and now I'm wondering if it's worth it to keep listening. I feel like the dynamic will be completely shifted, and I'm unsure if the podcast will still be as good. I've been agonizing over the decision for a month now, and I decided to finally ask people. I did really enjoy Kayne, so that might be a reason to keep listening?
Will reading the Yellow Kingbook spoil me on the plot of Malevolent or future plot points?
Interested in the book, dunno much about it (which is how I tend to to into books), but is it going to spoil me on character arcs or future plot points, or even lore stuff? I'm on part 54 of the podcast so far.

i took my own reference photos for this which involved covering my hands in fake blood! that was fun. i showed my mom my bloody hands and she immediately guessed (correctly) that whatever i was up to was somehow related to arthur lester. i'm predictable i guess.
Arthur dripped out after getting stabbed for the umpteenth time
Spoiler question about "28: The Undefeated"
So did Arthur actually die there? Or was he injured and John managed to save him? (And I have some doubts it was possible for him to do it WITH DAMN HOOKS)
Kayne says that "Yeah, he is dead, I know Death" and some more like that. And he says he doesn't care about "the logistics" and it's John's responsibility to keep Arthur safe. But Kayne is a sleazy fucker and it's hard to know what he means and if he is sincere.
Or did he die and got little help from the Manager with resurrection and Kayne just didn't pay attention to how Arthur was no longer dead after that?
Off to catch some rats
He rats. he catches. What a guy

Just finished Part 60 and oh my god…
I don’t know what to say… I’ve been listening to audio dramas for 5 years and I always say “this one’s my new favorite” every time i finish one, but this one just feels so different. This story was incredible. There’s so much i could talk about but it’s very late and i have an exam tomorrow so i will spare yall. I have no one in my life to gush about this to so onto reddit it goes. Thank you Harlan for creating this beautiful story.
Current Oscar, Arthur and Jon situation (as of ep 36):
John Doe Author
John writing books in Arthur’s sleep is so funny,
