Pastel colored Sony MiniDV cassettes

I always thought these pastel colored MiniDV cassettes that Sony made were a unique change of pace from the normal tapes. They weren't as mass produced and widely available as the standard black/red ones, or the normal Color Collection ones. I don't know that they were necessarily "rare," but I only ever found this one batch of them. Thought I'd share, for those who haven't seen them before. Happy Easter, or something. 🤣 🐇

Sony DCR-TRV33 Decay

I recently started up my mom's old Sony camcorder as I want to make vintage styled videos for my trip to the Adirondacks. It was reading a C:31:23 which I was able to fix with that method of replacing that tiny inner spacer of the pinch roller with a cut piece of ballpoint pen ink tube, so now it records fine. The issue I have now is the fear of other parts breaking on me once I get there.

So, in general, with this camcorder, what other internal parts are prone to brittle decay and general shelf rot similar to said spacer insider the pinch rollers? Like is there really anything else I should be worried about and should probably replace before my trip? I'm 21 now and I know for a fact that I never laid eyes on this camcorder over the past decade, so it's been sitting in the least unused for over 10 years.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

File sizes

Hi, I am not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this to but I will try anyway,

I have been trying to digitize some of my MiniDV tapes and have gotten through 8 so far by using WinDV with the camera attached to my pcie firewire card. The videos look good but since WinDV is an older software, it still uses AVI, making the 8 tapes take up almost 100gb. I want to put these on my apple photos library (I have 2tb iCloud).

Is there any way that I can downsize these files or put them into a different format like mp4 or mov without causing any drastic/visible change in quality? I do have a MacBook but it is running out of storage pretty fast and I don't want to have more on it than I have to. Especially since Apple likes clogging iCloud photos and videos into my System Files folder

Thank you

Is my MiniDV camera really beyond repair?

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago I found this MiniDV camera (Canon MV890) at my parents' house. I’ve been filming with it for about two weeks and I absolutely love it. Everything was working perfectly, but a few days ago I triggered an “end search,” and since then the camera can’t find anything on the tape.
I’ve tried searching manually, but no luck. From that moment on, I haven’t been able to reliably play any tapes on the camera. Occasionally, a recorded clip will briefly appear, but then it disappears again right away.
I even took it to a repair shop, where they also tried different tapes, but the same thing kept happening.
The owner told me it’s broken and basically not worth repairing. Has anyone had a similar issue or experience with MiniDV cameras?
I really fell in love with filming on this thing, and I’d much rather try to fix it than just buy a different one.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Help me save this near mint FX1

Just picked this one up, absolutely mint cosmetically and all buttons and features working, only issue is something in the tape mechanism. Ticking sound while recording/playing leaving glitches in new tape recording and while playing back tapes recorded on another camera, rewind sounds smooth, suspected the take up reel gears but have inspected every tooth and can’t visually identify any cracks or flaws. Everything looks very clean inside and I can’t imagine this has many hours logged.

Have tried a cleaning cassette and also manually cleaned the pinch roller and drum, any ideas on what to try next? I’m open to finding donor parts and replacing them but I can’t actually identify what’s causing it to skip.

What format for sharing with family?

My father has a Panasonic NV-DS 11 DVC digital camcorder, and around 11 MiniDV cassettes.
I managed to get the footage out on Windows 11 over Firewire with WinDV. I now have 50 GB worth of AVI files (from 3 of the cassettes)

The FFProbe of the file is like this

∂ ffprobe 04-08-11_09-59.00.avi
Input #0, avi, from '04-08-11_09-59.00.avi':
  Duration: 00:00:03.36, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 30832 kb/s
  Stream #0:0: Video: dvvideo (dvsd / 0x64737664), yuv420p, 720x576 [SAR 16:15 DAR 4:3], 28800 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn
  Stream #0:1: Audio: pcm_s16le ([1][0][0][0] / 0x0001), 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1536 kb/s

Any other step before converting to mp4, hevc, or av1 i should be aware of?

These videos are quite big for what they are. I was wondering what format could I use to shrink the videos up for sharing with family and such and easy of transfer over messaging apps or even giving access directly to media gallery?

My father specifically wouldn't mind them being just a little bit less High quality if it meant shrinking the 50GB to something manageable.

MicroMV DCR-IP1E - Ultrawide lens adapter

Wasn't a fan of how the default focal length felt so I modeled this adapter which press fits onto the front face allowing me to mount a wide angle adapter I use for a different camera.

The exact product page for the lens doesn't exist anymore but if you can find one with either a 33mm filter thread, or 30.5mm thread then I have 2 models that would work.

Personally I prefer the Ultrawide mode (without the macro lens) which is much wider than even the wide mode, but adds lens distortion.

It fits quite snug onto the front but it's not secure without being held in place, which I've been doing with my hand as you see in the image, but I've also occasionally secured it with a rubber band which was good enough for me.

Question : got 100+ DV Tapes : what is best pipeline for capture

Hi, i have more than 100 old DV tapes that i found in my cellar. I would like to capture them all, but they are fairly old (20 years actually) so i dont want to destroy them, and secondly i wonder if not some of them could have gotten someway dirty in the last years.

Think that i can just use my old camera ?

Or should i try to get one of these old capture devices ? (and then which would be the best for ages old tapes like these ?)

Do i reall need an cleaning tape ? and if which ones are the best ?

Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks or leads in regarss of how i could best do this

Converting Issues

I have some footage on a Panasonic PV-DV102D that I'm trying to digitize to my computer. I'm using the proper mini Firewire 400 - FIrewire 800 - Thundberbolt 2 - Thunderbolt 3. I can see the footage on the camcorder, but when I open up either OBS or QuickTime, the camera doesn't display as a source input.

What could be a solution to this issue?

Am I Cooked?

Is there any way my tape isn't completely destroyed? Is this savable?

I'm so devastated right now. I recently found my old JVC camcorder with my old skateboard footage, I was stoked to see my old friends and I shred all the skate spots in my hometown. But sadly the camcorder doesn't work anymore so I've been browsing eBay for a few weeks in search of a working mini-DV camcorder so I can view the footage. Finally got one a few days ago. The seller said it's in working condition. Everything operates as it should. Well I turned it in and the "condensation operation pause" message was on. I've spent days researching the fixes, nothing worked. I finally said F it and snagged my girlfriends blow-dryer. Fixed it within a couple minutes. So I'm friggin ecstatic at this point. Long story short, it started playing. It had a skip so I stopped the tape. I sat back and was just kinda taking it all in, the realization I was going to be able to watch all this old footage I thought was long gone really hyped me up ya know. I then started going through the menus to turn on the date and time. This is when the terrifying event took place. I pressed the fast forward button on accident and the tape started fast forwarding but the sound it made was that of nightmares. I scrambled and hit stop, a crunching sound echoed through my bones. random beeps began beeping and a "safeguard mode" message popped up in the LCD. I was a mess, I couldn't believe this, I was frantically hoping this demoncorder didn't just eat my prized footage. I opened it up and found this destruction. this is when I set the woodchipper I mean camcorder down gently with the mini-DV and took these pictures.

Sorry for the dramatized description, I think it's a coping mechanism, I apologize.

What's my next move?

Any feedback would be appreciated....

Thanks

DCR-TRV20 or DCR-PC100

Looking at these two models as they are the ones available from our local seller (Manila). I can't decide between them. Similarly priced. Would appreciate your thoughts!

I like that they are both 1MP standard definition 1/4" CCD. My assumption is they produce the same look, being from the same company with same spec'd sensors.
