Skykomish River Float Danger Zones

https://preview.redd.it/dp2obtqm299h1.jpg?width=3508&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c33d453eb851cc438c7d16ddff85b19c39b666fb

We all love river float season on the beautiful Skykomish River. The river has changed this year due to the massive flooding. Some of last year's danger zones no longer exist, but there are new danger zones to be aware of. There have been two major 911 boat rescues in the last two weeks (the fire department has had to rescue about 20 people who have got into trouble) and I thought I would highlight the location to avoid future trouble:

When launching from the Sultan boat launch (mile 0) you will see a large strainer on river left 2.08 miles downriver

  • This is your cue to DISCONNECT your raft / tube from everyone else
  • Use your paddle / frisbees to quickly move over to FAR RIVER RIGHT
  • STAY river right at the fork to avoid the killer strainer at mile 2.51

Here is a complete list of key river features 2026:

  • Mile 0 (Sultan boat Launch)
  • Mile .96 (river bends sharp right, stay river right)
  • Mile 2.08 (first strainer, stay river right)
  • Mile 2.51 (second strainer, VERY IMPORTANT stay river right at fork)
  • Mile 3.74 (Thunderbird RV boat launch)
  • Mile 4.68 (portage on river left. This was last's year's snag that caused trouble)
  • Mile 6.06 (Burger Island sand bar swimming hole)
  • Mile 6.57 (Ben Howard boat launch)
  • Mile 9 (strong eddy line right before Monroe Highway 203 bridge)
  • Mile 9.15 (Monroe Lewis Street bridge boat launch)

Please float with a paddle or frisbees so you can actually maneuver yourself and avoid river dangers. Happy floating!
