Ultimate Bitter-Sweet Ending: How Rick resets the universe, saves Diane, but pays the ultimate cosmic price (No lore broken)

:

We’ve seen a lot of finale theories on Reddit, but most of them boil down to time loops or meta-jokes. I wanted to share a concept for the final episode (let's say, Season 12, Episode 10) that is deeply tragic, romantic, respects the established lore, and gives Rick the ultimate character arc.

Think of reality right now as a text written in a blue pencil. Rick doesn't like it, but to rewrite it in a red pencil, he can't just write over it—he has to erase the blue entirely. Here is how it goes:

## The Setup: Peak Genius Meets Total Despair

Rick has completely lost interest in life. Everything is over, Prime Rick is gone, the Omega Device blueprints are erased by Evil Morty, and Rick is just bored and ready to die. But he is the smartest being in the universe—he refuses to just end his life for nothing.

He locks himself in the garage for a month, going completely feral. He is working on a secret project so impossibly complex that even calling it "genius" is an understatement. The viewers have no idea what he is building. Finally, the machine is ready. All Rick has to do is type the final code and press the button.

## The Pivot: Choosing Morty over Diane

Rick realizes that for this machine to work, it requires an equivalent exchange. To bring back what he loves most (Diane), he has to sacrifice the only other thing that has come to mean just as much to him.

Suddenly, Morty bursts into the garage. They have a classic, mundane argument—Rick grumbles, Morty yells back and storms out. Rick looks at the empty doorway, completely broken. We see a montage of flashbacks showing just how much Rick actually loves his grandson. He types the code... and decides NOT to press the button. Rick chooses Morty. He accepts reality as it is. He leaves Diane in the past because he chooses to live in the "now".

## The Twist: Classic Jerry Saves (and Destroys) the Day

Later that night, Rick is out partying somewhere in the galaxy to numb the pain. Jerry wanders into the empty garage and spots this massive, glowing apparatus sinking deep into the subterranean lab. Being Jerry, he sees a giant shiny button, gets curious, and presses it.

The screen flashes pure white. Galaxies, planets, and the fabric of reality itself begin to dissolve. Time flows backward. Total blackness.

## The New "Red Pencil" Reality

The screen stays black, and then we witness a beautiful, cinematic Big Bang. Planets reform under a sweeping, emotional soundtrack. The camera pans down to Earth, right into Rick’s old garage decades ago.

This is the exact moment from Rick's memory: young Rick is working on his portal gun, but it fails. But here is the massive change—Prime Rick never shows up. There is no bomb. No portal travel is ever invented. No Citadel of Ricks. No decades of cosmic trauma, alcoholism, and genocide. Rick just packs up, takes Diane and young Beth, and they go get ice cream.

## The Bitter-Sweet Catch: The Tragic Balance

Because Prime Rick never existed to jumpstart the multiverse, the cosmic balance demands a price. The universe was rewritten, and the one person who was just as substantial to Rick as Diane is erased from existence.

Morty is gone. Not just from this timeline, but as a concept across all reality. He will never be born anywhere.

## The Final Shot

The episode ends on a gorgeous sunset. An older, peaceful Rick and Diane are standing on their back deck. A slow, romantic Spanish song plays in the background as they share a slow dance.

But here is the most merciful part: Rick has absolutely no memory of his past life. He doesn't know about portal guns, he doesn't know about the Citadel, and he doesn't know who Morty is. He is completely wiped clean of his trauma. He lost his god-like intellect and his universe, but he found his peace. He is finally happy.

The tragedy and the memories of those 12 seasons of adventures are left entirely on the shoulders of the audience. Rick got his happy ending, but we are left staring at the screen, crying for a grandson who never existed.

In Rick and Morty they showed a scene of the murder of 67.

Hello, I created this account and this post with just one question. Am I the only one who noticed that in Rick and Morty there’s a post-credits scene in season 2 episode 5 where they kill 67?

What confused me more is that season 2 episode 5 came out in 2015, while 67 as a meme and trend only appeared around 2024–2025 (the dates might be a bit off). I searched the internet for videos and jokes about this but didn’t find any — maybe I just didn’t search well enough. I’m only writing this to ask other users if they know about it. Some people might not care, but I don’t want to offend anyone. Thanks if you reply, though I doubt many people will see this.

What Rick and Morty Episodes are vital to understanding the lore and character development?

Been reading what you all have to say about the show, and honestly as someone who’s seen all 9 seasons 2 times through… I feel like I’m missing a lot. What do i need to rewatch to REALLY understand the show, the multiverse, and the Smith Family?
