Added Crash Protection
I picked the SW-Motech's over the OE ones for two reasons:
- The OE ones mount to the lower engine case. I just didn't want to chance engine damage in a fall.
- Didn't want additional NVH. The OE ones mount to the engine it opens the possibility for [additional] vibrations to resonate through the bars and trasmit up to the chassis.
The crashguards were fun to install. The rear bolts were a challenge. There is limited space so getting the bolts threaded and then tightening them was arduous. In my case, the bolt holes had residual casting that made getting the bolts started a challenge.
Based on my experience, here's the tips I would off to anyone doing this install:
- Thread the bolts by themselves first before attempting to mount the bars. This will make the installation go smoother.
- Remove the horn this to give you additonal clearance.
- Speaking of additional clearance, I also unbolted the high-mount fender for additional space.
- Install the top bolt first - DO NOT TIGHTEN. This is the near the horn.
- Install the engine bolt second - DO NOT TIGHTEN.
- Install the rear bolt last - DO NOT TIGHTEN.
- Now repeat the same order and tighten the bolts.
- When you re-install the brake fluid reservoir, gently pull the aluminum arm that it's mounted to towards you. This will give it space and prevent it from rubbing/bumping/touching the crash bar.
- On the left side, after you finish tightening the rear bolt add some type of material between the bolt and the fuel line. You don't want this vibrating and rubbing. Over time I surmise this could lead to a leak.
Here's a pic of the left side rear bolt. You can see where I added some insulation to keep it off the bolt.
