She went on to win 18 NHRA national events and three NHRA Top Fuel championships in 1977, 1980, and 1982, becoming the first driver ever to win the title three times. After surviving a horrific 250 mph crash in 1984 that left her with multiple broken bones, she fought her way back to racing and continued competing until retiring in 2003. Now 86 years old, Shirley remains active in the drag racing community, regularly attending NHRA events, meeting fans, and making public appearances. She also founded Shirley’s Kids, a nonprofit charity where 100% of donations go directly to children in need within the drag racing community.
