For the first time under a new law, Virginia’s election offices were open Sunday. In nearly half the state, no one showed up to vote.

Some localities have had Sunday voting before. Now it’s mandated. The turnout was spotty, with large numbers in two Northern Virginia localities, but most rural localities recorded no votes.

But for kids who don’t have any exposure to these careers or opportunities — who don’t know that the Virginia State Police has a dive team or that some SWAT teams have paramedics or that there are firefighters who fight wildfires — the rescue camp aims to expose them to these experiences.
