How did "retinoid" get 50 points?

I'm only calculating 18 10 points - what am I missing?

Edit: Solved! Thanks to Dazzling-Produce-471 for educating me on the scoring. Play all 7 tiles, get 40 point bonus.

Should I tie? Or win?

I have the opportunity to tie a game and I don’t know what to choose. The last word to tie would be PUN. Which feels right.

Curious what others think about playing a fun word you know versus playing to win by moving around tiles.

A different spin on NYT "Connections" game

I built this daily puzzle game called "Omitten" (to the person who rants about hating games you can only play once a day — sorry).

My idea came from a compulsive habit I got from reading books on an e-reader and constantly looking up the definitions (iykyk). Quite often you'd see a word with 20 different meanings in different contexts, so I wanted to build a game around that.

You can get a maximum of 4 clues — first one will generally be difficult. It might be used in an archaic form, unusual context, etc. The second will generally narrow it down to a more specific domain. By the third it should all be coming together. Finally, the fourth will be as close to giving it away as possible.

You start with knowing only the first clue/sentence. This will generally be fairly difficult to guess. As you make guesses or skip, the next clue unlocks, but you lose 25 points for each additional clue you get.

If it sounds fun you can check it out here: https://omitten.com — it's completely free, has no ads, or anything of the sort. Feedback is much appreciated!

Does the Hard Computer opponent use real words?

I've been playing against the computer in Hard mode. I keep winning even though the computer seems to have the advantage of making up words. This shouldn't be possible, but it sure keeps coming up with words I've never seen. Given that I've won 13 out of 14 contests my vocabulary must be up to par. What's the deal?

Games timing out that I CANNOT SEE

New player, tried to search sub but did not come up with anything. Somehow I am timing out of games that I CANNOT SEE. It has happened 5+ times already. There was a period where I was starting a lot of games but the only games I have visible to me now are 2. Are these other games in a parallel universe? Thank you.

Where to find cryptic crossword

So I use the NYT games app, and I have a subscription. But I’ve been seeing people talk about the “cryptic crossword”… I don’t have that? And I go to the NYT games website, and I can’t find it there either. The only thing I get when I search it up is the answers of the day. Where do I find the actual game that I can play?

Connections #1070 May 16

Connections Puzzle #1070
🟦🟩🟨🟪
🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟨🟨🟨🟨
🟪🟪🟪🟪
🟦🟦🟦🟦

This one was a tad difficult for me today. I fell for the red herring and blue was leftovers.

American themes in the Connections (spoilers)

Just a little rant about the connections. I hate how Americanised it is so regularly. I understand that NYT is an American institution, but they have a global audience and theres no need for all the answers to be so American nobody else could be expected to know it. I mean for fucks sake todays one I have no idea that a > ! grinder < ! is a type of sandwhich. In my mind its just a gay dating app or something you grind stuff with. Just wish theyd use non american themes.

So, what do you think of the Midi?

I'm trying to like the Midi, but I'm finding that it uses a LOT of slang and words that are not words, but phrases (e.g., ROCKALBUM, BESTBUDDY, EMPTYTALK). I'm also annoyed by their "themes." I do crossword puzzles for the words. I pay zero attention to how quickly I can solve a puzzle.

I've completed all the Mini crossword puzzles (back to 2014) and those are fun. I'm not having "fun" with the Midi. Your thoughts??

That's how the tiles fall...

I've been playing someone who is really good and has beat me several times. I've been crushing him this game. Two bingos and 100+ point lead on him most of the game.

Now in the last 6-7 turns of the game, he has drawn the q, x, z, and j, as well as one of the blanks, playing ZA and QI on triple letter scores, and my lead is erased.

Meanwhile I've had nothing but one point letters for several moves.

I know thats just how the tiles fall but I have no one else to complain to about this injustice!

Gonna try my darndest to pull this one out... May the bot's luck calculation vindicate my suffering!

EDIT: He got another 40 points with JEANS, but I beat him by 3 points in the end!
