Anyone else entering Grade 9 at Huron Heights SS in September?

My son is 14 and will be starting Grade 9 in the fall at Huron Heights. He’s gone to a private school for all of elementary and does not know anyone at Huron Heights, so I want to see if anyone else is in the same boat. This is going to be a big transition for him and I think it might be easier to navigate if he knows at least one other person at the start, so I’m hoping to connect with other parents who may be in a similar situation and maybe introduce our kids ahead of the school year.

A little bit about him/us: we live very close to the school (biking/walking distance), he is an only child and is super into bikes - riding, fixing, modifying. He’s into stem and engineering (he will be taking the welding and auto mechanics course as one of his electives in the fall). He’s not really into sports but likes playing online games. He can be somewhat shy/awkward if he doesn’t know anyone but is a legitimately kind and considerate person with a great sense of humour.

If you’re the parent of a kid who will also be attending HH in the fall and you’re interested in helping your kid meet a new friend before the school year begins, please message me and lets see if we can make this work!

Areas to target for a family

Hey folks,

We are looking to move to Newmarket/Aurora region from Waterloo, ON and we would like to know what areas are more suitable for families. We were thinking about renting first to learn the area but decided to spend this summer in the city to learn about it, and explore some of neighborhoods. We are looking for a quiet and family-oriented neighborhood (no students/young adults who like to throw parties), good school nearby, close to parks/trails to walk our dog.

My colleague at work recommended Stonehaven-Wyndham, Woodland Hill. Any other ones that you can recommend?

Helicopters

I live beside Bathurst and Green Lane… I constantly hear helicopter flying by, especially at night. My whole house vibrates. This has been happening every night this year. I haven’t noticed them 2-3 years back as much or almost at all. Does anyone have any idea why? Are they searching something? Is it ambulance helicopters ?

Dating Someone Who Works in Southlake Hospital

I'm just curious with how it is because I may have developed a crush with someone who works in the hospital. I know hospital staff are incredibly busy and have crazy schedules so dating might be unconventional.

I'm also just curious, is it offensive or creepy to ask them out? Dating apps are just the worst and I feel like sometimes meeting people the old-fashioned way by walking up to them and being confident still has its merits.

Looking for a good hair stylist

It's hard to find a hair stylist who is talented, LISTENS to what you want, and doesn't ignore clients' wishes and just give trendy weird cuts or boring cuts that are WAY SHORTER than what you requested.

If you know of a hair stylist near Aurora or Newmarket who understands how to make hair beautiful and respects clients' wishes, please let me know their details.

I will be very grateful.

Alot of racist people around

No real point of this just wondering if anyone of color has experienced the same.

Arab fella here, fully naturalized, born and raised in Canada, contribute to society, pay alot of taxes, homeowner, am a good neighbor, family man etc.

I dont think i'm a bad person generally speaking, I dont have a menacing look or act rash in public, but since living here for the last 8 years i've encountered atleast 100+ racist people.

I am not the kind of person to play the victim or imagine this i've experienced, disgusted looks, verbal aggression, being physically blocked like someone got in my way and tried to not let me move, spoken to like I was ignorant or a juvenile frequently, yelled at for no reason, intentionally bumped into, someone even tried bumping into my child recently, yes intentionally etc.

I'm just wondering where this is all coming from? I've drawn a conclusion but its not a very positive one so I wonder if there are others who've experienced this, or if there's anyone who acknowledges this behavior from themselves/family members.

Couple mid 30s wanting to meet other like minded couples.

Hey everyone,

My wife and I moved up here about 4 years ago, and now that we have a little one, we’ve realized making new local friends can be tough! Most of our long-term friends live an hour away, so we’re looking to connect with a nearby couple in a similar stage of life.

We’re looking for the kind of friends where you can just shoot a quick text like, "Hey, what are you up to? Want to let the kids run around the backyard?" We’d love to find people to hang out with for walks, park trips, backyard bonfires, or just having a casual beer and a cigar.

A bit about us: We are an easy-going Italian, conservative, Catholic couple. We love cooking, the outdoors, animals, beach trips, and finding fun things to do with our little one. If you're looking for a similar vibe and want to hang out, feel free to reach out!

Tip included automatically at cafes…

This is my first experience ordering at a cafe in Newmarket where I am being presented with a $9 total for a matcha and told that this total includes an automatic tip.

Why have we fed into this insane tipping culture where I am tipping without choice for the bare minimum?

I shop mostly local, heavily support the town’s farmers market and have a real respect for small business and understand how tough it is to own/rent property and make a business out of it right now. I tip generously at restaurants and often at cafes.

The poor barista had pain in her eyes when telling me the total, she knew this was ridiculous for a mediocre at best matcha. I felt bad for her honestly and probably would have tipped regardless.

Just something about the choice being taken from me makes me unfortunately choose to support elsewhere.

Anyways, curious to hear other’s thoughts!

EDIT* Alright, I understand that you guys want to know which cafe. This was the cafe inside Replenish on main street. Keep in mind that while the cafe sucks for this, I appreciate the concept of their store and reducing plastic waste in general and highly recommend people to go there still for unique products/refills.

PLEASE. Walk your dogs in the early morning or in the evening when it’s this hot.

Older gentleman walking two labs on Eagle St. across Glenway Circle today around 130-2pm. F@ck you. Your one lab was clearly struggling with the heat and literally vomiting and you couldn’t even turn you attention to him and help him out instead you kept walking completely unbothered while he struggled. Looked like an elderly dog too. Why the hell are you walking your dogs in the middle of the day in this heat? You want to walk - walk but leave the dogs home at in the middle of the day during a heat wave. Is it so hard to walk them in the early morning or wait until the evening? I can’t get this poor dog out of my head. It didn’t even phase him that his dog was labouring and suffering. What is wrong with people?

I was trespassed from Superstore while doing an Instacart order

I'm still trying to process what happened today.

I was shopping an Instacart batch at Superstore on Yonge Street in Newmarket, Ontario. When I got to checkout, one of the orders in the batch kept getting declined. It wasn't my personal card—it was the Instacart payment, and there was nothing I could do to fix it myself.

I immediately contacted Instacart Support and ended up waiting around 30 minutes for an agent to help me. During that entire time, I stayed at the checkout, explained that I was waiting for Instacart Support, and wasn't trying to leave with any merchandise.

Instead of trying to understand the situation, Loss Prevention approached me and treated me like I was trying to steal. I repeatedly explained that I was an Instacart shopper waiting for support because the payment was failing, but it didn't seem to matter.

The situation escalated to the point where they called the police, and I was issued a trespass notice from the store.

What made this even worse is that I genuinely felt like I was racially profiled. I can't prove what was going through anyone's mind, but based on the way I was treated compared to simply being a shopper waiting for a payment issue to be resolved, that's how the experience felt to me. It was humiliating, embarrassing, and completely unnecessary.

The most frustrating part is that this all could have been avoided if Instacart Support had responded in a reasonable amount of time. Instead, I was left standing there with no help while the situation spiraled out of control.

I've already filed a formal complaint with Instacart and intend to file a complaint with Superstore as well. I'm asking both companies to investigate what happened, review the actions of the Loss Prevention staff, and explain why this situation was handled the way it was.

Has anyone else had an Instacart payment decline like this? If you've ever dealt with Loss Prevention while working as an Instacart shopper, how did you handle it?

I'm also interested in hearing whether anyone has successfully appealed a store trespass or pursued a complaint after feeling they were treated unfairly.

This was honestly one of the most degrading experiences I've had while simply trying to do my job.

RV on driveway

Bylaw officer came by today to tell us we can’t keep our tiny trailer on our own large driveway over the summer, all because a neighbour complained.

The kicker? It’s entirely complaint-driven. That trailer was apparently fine for years until one neighbour decided to pick up the phone. And if we don’t comply, we’re looking at a fine of up to $25K. For a trailer. On our own property.

What an ass-backwards law. Make it make sense.

Any FGC locations in Newmarket?

Hey, I'm a gamer who loves fighting games. I'm better than all of my friends and am half decent online. I'm looking for a spot in town that hosts any FGC events that don't involve driving to Toronto.

It would be cool to meet people as well that have the common interest.

TIA

What closed Newmarket store do you miss the most?

I thought about this as I was in the Circle K on Mulock (newly renovated by the way, very nice) .. but I really miss the former Mac’s / Circle K on Leslie and Davis. I feel like it was the perfect spot for a convenience store and I remember going there a ton as a kid and as a teenager — just something about it as a late night spot for a soda or a snack was really comforting. I think it’s a physiotherapy place now. Shame.

Got me thinking, what’s one Newmarket store that’s no longer open that you miss?
