What would you do?

I just finished The Caretaker and my biggest frustrations was why would Grace let a girl she barley vetted out (and in her early 20s) take on such a big responsibility? Especially if Grace really was leaving forever. Every time Macy failed a rite I thought “well, what did you expect” especially since she failed most of the rites for a silly/ careless reason. I’ll be nice and say as someone in my late 20s, I would have screwed up too if I did this 5 years ago.

My question is, if you went through what Macy went through, would you have turned on the foyer light?

Just finished my first read through of WUtLH - questions

I posted some questions in r/horrorlit and a wonderful commenter pointed me in the direction of this subreddit!

First of all, I find it difficult to be genuinely scared
by books or to find books in the genre that truly stand out from the rest. Don’t get me wrong, I adore horror novels, but imagine my surprise going into WUtLH expecting a standard horror that was very enjoyable but nothing new to write home about. Turns out it was one of my absolute favourite reads of 2026 and already one of my favourite horror novels ever

I finished it last night and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I am going to do some digging through this sub when I finish work to try and find answers for the questions I posted over in horrorlit, but in the meantime I’m hoping to get some clarity on the book title please! Again, this was my first read so there may be something glaringly obvious I’ve overlooked, and I have searched this sub for the answer but couldn’t find anything (may have just used the wrong search terms so please do tell me if so!)

Why is the title WE Used to Live Here? Who is “We”? Thomas and Eve? Thomas and Paige et al? Is this question opening a can of worms that would take more than one read and a Reddit post to answer?

Caretaker + Man in Basement

I just finished reading Marcus' Man in Basement story and I have so many thoughts swirling through my head, but mainly these three:

  1. The last few parts of the MIB story reference passing Old House. I don't remember OH being referenced prior to this, but I did read it over the span of a few weeks so that could just be my bad memory. Can anyone clarify if this is an OH we've encountered in WUTLH or Caretaker? Or if it's another one?

  2. It definitely sounds like desolate road that has the one bus stop on it in MIB is the same road that's in Caretaker when Macy is headed to the interview. Is anyone else under the assumption that the man that tried to get Macy's attention before being turned away & off the bus was Mitch? If so, what do you think his goal was on that bus / trying to get Macy's attention?

  3. In both stories, "suicides/suidice attempts" are described as utilizing a bag over their head to induce suffocation (I assume? As in, that's the logical reason, but with Macy there were pills involved too I think, so it could be just a portion of the attempt). What could be the reasoning behind so many of MK's characters taking/trying to take their own lives in this way?

Looking forward to any thoughts & theories 🩶

Counting MK's Short Stories in Total Books Read?

Hey fellow OHA enthusiasts ☺️

I wasn't sure where to post this, and I checked the guidelines and I believe this counts as close enough to "staying on topic," but if the mods deem this to be too off-topic, feel free to delete.

I'm making my way through The Man in my Basement Takes One Step Closer Every Week and it is quite lengthy, so I was curious if anyone logs these short stories in Goodreads, Fable, etc? If so, how did you do it?

I'm partially reading the story and listening to a narration of it that I found in a masterlist of narrated r/nosleep stories, I believe. The narration is ~10hrs long, so I think that would qualify as long enough to count as a "book" 🤭 but maybe that's just me!

So has this book been 100% unraveled yet, or do we still not know everything?

I just finished this book the other night and, while most of the book was tense and enjoyable, the ending genuinely pissed me off with all the questions and events left unanswered.

In sheer hope that I get some answers and don’t feel like I’ve wasted my time reading this book, I started decoding some of the puzzles. I’ve already translated the Morse code on the articles and decoded the hidden message with the capitalized letters, but that’s it so far. I know there’s also the glyph/cyphers on the same article and probably some other minor things I’ve missed.

But has this book been 100% unraveled yet, in which it’s enough to fully understand what the hell was happening in this book? Or do we still not know everything? Because if it’s the latter, I’d rather stop wasting my time and move on from this convoluted book.

Thoughts on THOMAS and who he really is

When it comes to Thomas and his family they are all a bit of an enigma. Who and what do you think Thomas really is. Is he helping Eve? Or is he an old god pretending to help Eve. Maybe he is protecting old house and the “ring of eyes”. What if he is a mimic of Elijah himself. Could Thomas even be “the forbidden phrase”. Or could he actually be a host to the real entity. Maybe all of these things are true at once 🤷‍♀️

Let’s put it to the poll and see what everyone’s thoughts are.

Just finished!!

I just finished and have so many thoughts lol and I’d love for people to chime in with their own.

I think maybe Alison “destiny-swapped” with Eve ?? When Eve/Emma is being arrested she sees Alison and says she looks like she’s remorseful. Maybe Alison feels bad for doing so.

The members of the family are confusing and I wish they were fleshed out a little more. So is Paige a delinquent turned Bible thumper or a 1950s housewife? Anything more about Jenny hiding ?? We got next to nothing about the boys as well. Honestly I’m free to whatever insights anyone has!!

WUTLH Layered Time

I know these are all WUTLH things, but I'm making notes for the podcast on my break and wanted to share something I found.

Does anyone remember in Stranger the notes on the wall of the cabin? One of them says "Host who lives beneath Civil War museum can transfer his memories by making eye contact."

Jump forward to Relic where we have the passage "Again, that morose vision invaded her thoughts: a gaunt hand, a silver-tipped pen stabbing into pale flesh. Alison started to believe there was only one way to make it stop, to get her old life back."

How does Eve have such a vivid memory of an event she didn't witness? Only heard about?
Let's jump forward 97 pages to Labyrinth.

"She looked over her shoulder, directly at Eve. Dim light glinted off of the woman's unblinking eyes. Two white flecks surrounded by an ocean of black. It was like she could see into Eve's thoughts, feel Eve's terror. Like she was trying to tell Eve something without speaking a word."

Then Eve gets uploaded with Alison's memory including almost verbatim:

"A moonlight room, a guant hand, white knuckles gripped around a silver-tipped fountain pen. Soundlessly stabbing into pallid flesh."

And then a pale blue light which I'm starting to suspect is either a previous version of someone from Eve mentioning she was in the exact spot as the pale blue light she saw or someone else witnessing a memory through eye contact.

I really think the vivid memories Eve has of the stabbing early on in the book is from making eye contact with Alison in Labyrinth.

Can anyone help me out?

Hi! I'm new here and just started reading the book recently. I'm from Brazil and was going through the Kindle/audiobook version until I realized some things don't quite come through in those formats.

My physical copy arrives tomorrow, but I've heard it only includes the map. So I wanted to ask people who've been following this since the beginning:

  1. Reddit origins: Did this story actually start here on the forum? If so, is there content (posts, updates, documents) that didn't make it into the final book?
  2. Images and photos: Is there a version or a link somewhere that has the images mentioned in the story? I saw a discussion about the ants and a polaroid, but I can't find the lynx photos or the classified files anywhere. Does anyone have a "dossier" or a link (Imgur/Drive) with the original visual evidence?

PLEASE: No spoilers past DOC A04 (HOAX)! I'm still working through the codes and symbols. Thanks!

(sorry for English! I used Claude to this)

WUTLH Document Categories

I can't remember if we've ever talked about this because I never noticed. It reminds me of how the historical registry catalogs houses and buildings.

A documents: all are related to someone coming into contact with something/someone related to Old House for the first time.

B documents: all related to Mandela effects

C documents: all events either related to someone already having been in an Old House or an event related to Old House. Inkblots is by Bjørn Erikson who was introduced to Old House in A06 Names.

E documents: I'm not 100% sure, but I wonder if notorious enough wards/anchors get their own categories?

I also wonder if markers are just the sequential order of how the documents were found and cataloged for that category.
