The film was originally written with rapper-actor Tupac Shakur in mind to play Jody; Shakur had previously worked with Singleton on Poetic Justice. However, following Shakur's murder in 1996, Singleton decided to replace Shakur with R&B artist Tyrese Gibson. Additionally, the role of Rodney was originally written for Ice Cube, who had worked with Singleton on Boyz n the Hood and Higher Learning. The film marked the feature acting debut of Gibson and provided Henson with her first prominent role.
Whitney Houston's appearances at BET events may have been few, but each one became a memorable chapter in her legendary career. From celebrating her groundbreaking success to being honored for her extraordinary legacy, Whitney's presence always commanded the stage.

Okay… we may’ve been in diapers when it first premiered, but don’t let anyone fool you — I definitely remember the videos and the whole era that came from that show. I’m only 26 and I know exactly what 106 & Park is. Soon as 5 o’clock hit, that TV was on BET automatically. And my people watched it, so I had to sit watch. Backpack on the floor, snack in hand, countdown already rolling. It was a routine. And we would dance while the song was playing.
I remember hating they would cut the video short, this used to make me mad.
AJ & Free, Rocsi & Terrence, New Joint of the Day, Freestyle Friday — we were right there watching all of it. Older folks swear we weren’t outside, but we lived that era too.

Peyton starred in the BET Short-lived college drama The Quad.
I used to watch Let’s Stay Together all the time when they premiered it. BET stayed running it, and it was one of those shows you could just throw on and vibe with. And I do remember the characters names, let me see, there was Stacy, Charles, Tasha, Jamal, and Kita. I only watch it for Erica Hubbard (after they canceled Lincoln Heights). But it was so funny, and just felt good to watch. Definitely one of those early‑2010s BET shows that really deserved more love.
The show is about is Stacy and Charles trying to make their relationship work once they actually move in and start building a life together. She’s a doctor, he’s a contractor, and the show follows them juggling work, family, and all the little things that come with being committed. Tasha and Jamal are the “been together forever” couple who bring the loud, funny energy. Overall, it’s just a warm sitcom about love, marriage, and everyday life.
