Tidepool vs DIY Loop

Hi I’m currently on Omnipod 5 and I’m just not satisfied with the algorithm. It’s not strong enough to bring my sugars down or keep them from falling too low, resulting in me having to be more hands on with my diabetes. O5 runs hybrid so it won’t bring my sugars down when it’s rising or high on its own is why I’m interested in the loop systems, my question is which one? Feeling very type A i want my numbers to be between 70-100. I do love the no tube though which is why I’m hesitant about tidepool having to switch to twist. But overall I’m focused on algorithms. Looking for insight on any information that will help me choose thanks :)

Omnipod and Running 🏃

So currently my Tandem T slim pump is now out of warranty and I wasn’t a fan and I’m currently working with my working with my diabetes team to try out new AID insulin systems before committing to one! I should also mention I’m UK based if it makes a difference.

This last 2 weeks I’ve been trying out the Medtronic 780G with simplera and smartguard, and outside of running it’s been doing well. BUT I am an avid runner, I do 40km a week, and also in the gym 2/ 3 days a week, and the aggressiveness of smartguard has me scrambling for sweets constantly before running, to get my glucose >7.0 mmol/L and during to stop me crashing low.

My question to the Omnipod community is this, are any of you runners (half marathon to marathon distance) and find the Omnipod handles an active lifestyle better than Medtronic’s system? Or is this an issue I will have am with any AID system?

Also how whats the UK based podders experience getting Dexcom sensors rather than Libre from their diabetes team? I need a follow app for my wife and ideally apple watch access.

Omnipod first impressions

Just started. I'm an old computer software designer so I thought this would be easy. Nope. I expected a prioritized set of like THREE dead-simple descriptive large bold buttons. Like "ATE FOOD" "GIMME A SHOT ANYWAY" "SHOW SUGAR". Three dang obvious buttons for the main functions. Large buttons for those of us with fuzzy eyesight. Nope. Nothing of the sort. The complete opposite, actually. Each button would take us to ONE STATIC PAGE that doesn't flash, slide beep, scroll, add purple margins, or bring up other dialogs. No surprises. MAYBE an advanced mode that also brings up check boxes, unintelligible icons that are actually buttons, long scrolling lists of 3 point items to check off, etc, etc, etc, just in case Einstein comes back to life and needs insulin. For the rest of us, all this default complexity just leads to confusion, frustration, sidepaths, delays, errors, and wanting to throw this expensive gadget against the wall. As it is each page is a surprise-- different boxes, different layouts, different paradigms, and all too small for convenient reading for anyone over age 30. I'm sure you hired the best medical and software experts that slaved for years to pack so many features, tricks, algorithms, nuances, and displays. The best of MIT if not also Harvard. Problem is, your end user is an aging, slightly forgetful, fuzzy-eyed just average IQ person. We can handle maybe THREE LARGE BUTTONS WITH BRIEF ACTION LABELS. ONE STATIC PAGE. This isn't rocket science most of the time. It needn't be a surprising mish-mash with action buttons scattered all over several different pages. If you are so happy with the NASA central look, fine. But how about a AVERAGE JOE MODE with one page, three buttons, and no fancy and fuzzy stuff? I haven't thrown it against the wall yet but it's been close several times. I could land on the Moon with less trouble.

OP5 settings help :)

Please remove this if it’s not allowed! I will be discussing any advice with my endo before changing my settings too much.

So my goal is to have super tight control. With MDI I was pretty much 100% TIR 70-180 mg/dl and probably 95% 70-140 mg/dl. I’m still honeymooning I presume btw.

With starting OP5, I’m having a bit harder time keeping good numbers. Noting crazy at all. I’m around 85-90% TIR, so I’m happy, but I have to constantly check and do correction blouses and sometimes overrides (although I try not to since my endo says it messed up the algorithm). I’d really like to be able to bolus and not have to stare at it for the next 6 hours. Since I’m in college, I’ve literally been eating no carbs during the day because I don’t want to be distracted in class, and just eating carbs at night. I’d love to be able to spread that out some more.

The biggest red flag in my data is that I’m usually 70% bolus or more and 30% basal. My endo told me to try to get it down to 50-50 ish, but proceeded to not change any of my settings or tell me how to do that other than reliably count carbs. I’d say I’m good about carb counting super accurately 50% of the time (weighing stuff etc), then kind of by vibes the other half of the time. I do almost always pre bolus 15-20 mins. The only days I get 50/50 are those that I eat super low carb (see picture with the only 50/50 day being 55g of carbs).

I rarely have been going low so that’s been great! I’d go low a couple times a week with MDI. MDI I took 8 units basal, and now with OP5 I’m around 4 units daily.

Let Me know if you have any advice I could bring up with the endo. I attached some images for reference. Thank you so much!

O5/G7 & Swimming

Hey everyone. I would appreciate it if people can share their experiences in the pool with the omnipod 5 paired with the g7. Any issues? Any hacks? All good? Let me know. Thanks in advance!

Any idea what happened here?

This isn’t my first time with an omnipod 5 on the beach but it’s the first time this has happened to a pod. I got a communication error and looked over at it and saw that it was filled with liquid and brown/rust colored almost? I took it off and my arm seemed fine and it had been delivering insulin up until that point!

Thanks for such a restful nite!

I so enjoy alarms in the middle of the night that claim a 100 point drop in 15 minutes. What a piece of trash, both OP5 and its partner in crime, G7. Thanks.

Cant order new box (Australia)

I’ve been on Omnipod 5 since December 25 and it’s a lifesaver. Recently I wanted to switch from a Freestyle Libre 2 plus cgm to Dexcom g7 so on Thursday when I saw my Diabetic Educator we started that. Problem is I’m now on my last pod and hadn’t heard anything so decided to just order another freestyle box for now. Pharmacy ring me up (I order on the app then go in the day after) and said that NDSS wouldn’t approve my order. I thought maybe it had already switched to the g7 so asked if they could try ordering that box, got put on hold for 15 then when she came back she said it wouldn’t let her order any Omnipod products. I’m on private health insurance so usually I just have to go and pay $26 per box but now idk if/how I can get my hands on another pod. Tried calling and emailing my educator but she hasn’t responded (I think she might not work tuesdays to be fair). I’m going to ring her at 9 tomorrow and if she doesn’t pick up I’ll ring the endocrinologist but I’m just a bit panicked about this. I don’t have any spare rapid acting insulin pens or prescription for them, if I got desperate I know I could go to urgent care or the ED (or maybe even just go to my regular pharmacy and see if they can’t give me a pen in the meantime). Just kinda confused on what to do rn.

Daughter runs low after new pump

My daughter has been using the omnipod-5 since November of last year. She will occasionally go low after changing her pump. Last change her blood glucose was at 150 when we finished. Her blood sugar was good for about half an hour and then it dropped from around 130 which is her target, to 62 in about 10 minutes.

Today, we changed her pump and she was more stable (she had some protein after), and her blood sugar was higher. Then we had dinner. She had around 70 carbs (she had dessert too). We didn't bolus before, as we usually do, because her blood sugar was heading down while she was eating. So, she ate and her blood sugar started to rise but it didn't even hit her target. Then it started to go down again. We had to give her some quick carbs to get her to go up again. With the amount of carbs she had she should have had 1.4 units of insulin to cover. Instead we didn't bolus at all and she still was going low.

Has anyone experienced this?

iPhone app stuck at loading 1 of 8

Called tech support and they can’t figure it out. Anyone else see this? iPhone 13, app version 2.1.0. Worked for a year before now. Have about 30GB storage left.

Restarted the phone, reinstalled the app.

Thigh Placement

I pretty much only place the pods on my lower back/upper buttocks area but I’d like to try some new placement. Absolutely hated the pod on my arm or my abdomen (particularly miserable as a stomach sleeper). I’m wondering if back of the thigh or inner thigh is a viable option. If you’re a thigh podder, where exactly do you like to keep it? Any pros/cons? Any creative ways I’ll find to hit it on things that I never thought about?

Allergic to Skin-Tac Wipes

Hiya, I’ve recently found out i am allergic to the skin-tac wipes which i’ve only started using recently. They were very good in terms of making my pods stick better and avoiding insulin leakage but now i’ve developed an allergy to them. I get an intense itch, a red rash, and when i take the pod off, the area seems to get “wet” with an unknown odd smelling liquid.

All in all, this really sucks as i really liked using the skin-tac wipes, does anybody have any alternatives or solutions to avoid this allergic reaction? I am in desperate need PLEASE help.

Problems with Omnipod 5

Half vent half asking for advice. I started the Omnipod 5 mid-week last week. It was working great. My major issue is highs and it was addressing them before I even went up, which is a total game changer for me. Then the weekend hit and I spent practically all day at 20 mmol/L (360 mg/dL). This is completely unacceptable to me, obviously. Looked at my O5 graph and it wasn’t even trying to correct for it, probably because I was just manually giving myself multiple units of insulin since the system was saying it didn’t need any correction (yet BS wouldn’t come down). I have a pretty demanding job so I usually just don’t eat anything during the day, and I imagine the algorithm had a hard time translating that to the weekend when I do eat consistently. What do I do about that? Switch to manual mode on weekend? The persistent highs make no sense to me. I even switched my pod to make sure it was actually delivering insulin, and no luck.

Also, it seems like O5 is now just ignoring my targets and hovers around 2 mmol/L higher than I want it to. Since the week ended, I haven’t seen it be on target even once. I increased my max basal rate, but I don’t know if that will make a difference.

I can’t switch off O5. I paid a lot of money out of pocket to get on it since Eros was being discontinued. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Leaking, giving up on omnipod

I have been on omnipod for almost 10 years. Within the last 3 years (minimum) my pods have been leaking insulin and blood. My doctor said the blood part is from “hitting a capillary” (sure 🙄). I know the leaking comes large boluses but im insulin resistant. I cant stand the smell of insulin on my body, or the consistent clicking the pod makes. I did tegaderm and iv3000 and its still leaking. When i called omnipod customer service they even told me maybe its time for something new, i cant see myself doing mdi or a tubed pump, this is of course my only tubeless option and changing seems like something so drastic that I cant even fathom. Im currently sobbing because I feel so out of control and I need to know I can wear something that helps me live comfortably. Im so upset that this product cant work for me but it can for so many people.

Certain G7s not compatible with Omnipod??

Just got 3 G7s that have this sticker from replacement shipments. Thankfully I use the Mobi so it’s not a big deal for me, but why are some incompatible with Omnipod?
EDIT: These are 10 DAY, not 15 day. Not a weird 15 day thing

Omnipod keeps sending child into hypo at night

Hi team. Wondering if anyone has run into this issue before, as it is becoming incredibly frustrating!

My 5 year old has been using omnipod 5 for 9 months now and we consistently get hypos when she goes to bed and overnight in auto mode.

I have changed her target bgl from 6.1mmol/L to 7.2 from 8pm until 7am which helped for a while but now the pump is doing the same thing again where it is giving her insulin when she is well below target and again when trending down! She doesn't run high overnight so I don't buy that it is "predicting an increase" as per the manual.

Any ideas or shared experience before I contact Insulet?

Have attached picture from last night as an example - it sent her into another hypo (not pictured).

Algorithm not correcting highs at night

Only had the OP5 for 2 months. First 2 wks it worked great. Now my sugar creeps up at night and OP5 does t try to correct it.

Is there something in the settings I can adjust to help with this? Still learning g how to play with it

PDM cases

Any recommendations for cases or covers for the pdm? I like the 1 that came with the starter kit (based in North of Ireland) but the buttons dont seem to line up properly which is fustrating.

I bought a silicone case from amazon but it constantly pulls off while im putting the pdm in my pocket or taking it out of my pocket.

Ideally looking for something slightly less flexible than the cheap silicone 1s. Any recommendations and photos appreciated!

Degraded product

I left part of this as a comment in another thread-

I personally think the pods have degraded. I have used Omnipod for years but only recently have they been continually failing to deliver insulin. My bolus is not high, I was stuck at 400 which is very uncharacteristic for me. I ended up giving an injection in my stomach to lower it. I called for a replacement today and noticed my pod had 50+ units. I only fill mine to the lowest/minimum line and I was on day 3. No way had I not used any insulin.

I contacted my dr about changing pods sooner but why is this an issue now? My body comp hasn’t changed. My insulin needs haven’t changed. My pods have just stopped performing. It’s ruining my A1c.

I also have a half marathon I’m running and having these highs waking me up at night because my pod isn’t correcting them is not ideal. Waking up with a fasting close to 200 when I am usually 90-100. Not knowing the pod is basically trash till an entire day passes and your sugars are just stuck high.
