Onimusha: Way of The Sword is coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Can we talk about the Sekiro similarities for a moment?

Not just the camera angle or visual presentation either. Sekiro (Wolf) definitely had a physical appearance based on Musashi Miyamoto.

The parry system, the enemy stamina system, and even the red dot on an exhausted enemy into the kill strike right down reflect Sekiro. Capcom knew what they were doing.

The whole "hold button to absorb items" thing? That was Onimusha first. Sekiro used it as well.

The controls are so similar since you use L1 to block/parry in both games as well. It's an uncanny similarity and shows zero doubt that the devs were huge fans of Sekiro.

Not calling anyone a copycat or bringing down the game. But coming from both classic Onimusha and Sekiro, it's amazing to see the parallels.

Kind of Disappointing

Is it just me or was the demo for Way of the Sword slightly disappointing? I feel like I expected more, maybe longer? I don’t know. I’ll likely still play it, but that didn’t help sell me on it.

Best way to play onimusha 3 and 4

Hi,

I'm looking for the best way to play Onimusha 3 and Onimusha 4 (Dawn of Dreams).

There is an important constraint: I would absolutely like to have the Japanese voices while keeping the French text/subtitles.

I'm open to all solutions: PC version, PS2 emulation, undub patch, mods, combination of versions, etc. The goal is mainly to get the best possible experience.

What do you think is currently the best solution for playing under these conditions? If you have a setup that really works, I'd appreciate the details.

Thanks!

Fun Discoveries

After playing the demo well over a dozen times I’m STILL discovering new mechanics, attention to detail, and overall fun features in the game. For instance, when you do a regular parry against arrows, you can direct it into a different enemy. Another one I just discovered prompted me to make this post. The kimonos(?) hanging up inside some areas? If you parry a genma and direct it into one, they will get wrapped up in it and begin blindly swinging their sword and damage other enemies. I wouldn’t be surprised if these two things are trophies. I hope theres tons of other things like this in the full game. Have any of you discovered anything that isn’t immediately apparent?

[Feedback] Suggestion for better button mapping: Soul Absorption needs to be remappable to R2

Hi everyone,
I’ve been really enjoying the demo for Onimusha so far. The combat mechanics feel precise and the parry system is incredibly satisfying. However, I’ve encountered an ergonomic issue that becomes very apparent during boss encounters.
Currently, the default control schemes (specifically Option B) force both the Parry (L1) and the Soul Absorption (L2) actions onto the left hand. While this is manageable during standard combat, it creates significant friction during boss fights. Trying to calculate the exact timing for a precise parry while simultaneously managing soul absorption with the same hand feels quite clunky and less responsive than it could be.
Since the R2 button currently has no assigned action in the game, it would be a massive quality-of-life improvement if the developers allowed us to re-map the Soul Absorption to R2. This would free up the left hand to focus exclusively on movement and parrying, allowing for a much smoother and more ergonomic combat experience.
I know the team is likely busy with the final build, but adding full re-mappable controls or at least giving us the option to bind the absorption to R2 would be a huge win for accessibility and player comfort.
Has anyone else felt this same ergonomic strain during the boss fights?

Who The Hell Wears A Metal Hat?!

I really enjoy the boss fight despite his relatively low health pool. It's a great time trying different mechanics against him though which I think makes it a perfect demo. The various parries, deflections, Issen, dodge, etc all present different ways to play the game your way and each has their own strengths and weaknesses it feels.

Maybe I'm not as good at the game, but I've replayed the boss fight a few times and I'd say he still beats me 1 out of 5 times.

What's up with the easy difficulty on the demo?

First time playing an Onimusha game, and I had a question. I loved the combat, tone, graphics, story, sound/music design, but not the difficulty.

I don't expect Onimusha to be dark souls/sekiro level hard, but when I choose a "non story difficulty" that explicitly says "it's meant to challenge you", I expect to be *challenged* and die a decent amount (see Resident Evil harder difficulties).

This hasn't happened here:

  • 95% of the enemies usually just stare at you for ages until they do an attack. If you are aggressive, they'll just let you completely pummel them
  • Parries are super easy and the parry window is incredibly forgiving
  • Enemies are slow, don't punish you and don't do that much damage
  • The entire game can be run through by spamming normal attacks and then retreating
  • When you're fighting more mobs at the same time, the enemies almost completely AFK until you're done with the mob you're fighting

The only part where the difficulty was okay was with the final boss, but even that was a walk in the park.

So, here's a question, was this only done like this for the demo or will the final game also look like this? Are other Onimusha games super easy and meant for casual gamers as well or is this isolated to the newer title?

I've seen some arguments from people that say "it's just a starting area, it's supposed to be easy", but the way the game opens up and how final boss talks to you clearly shows that this is definitely not in the beginning...

Onimusha 2 - help needed

Hi everyone! I am currently stuck playing Onimusha 2. This little guy stole the herb I need to heal Jubei, and I can’t figure out how to kill it. I’ve read I need to charge my attack, or Critical mode. I tried the first one without success and I can’t « active » the second. If someone can explain me, I would be grateful! Thank you in advance!

Settling the Onimusha vs Sekiro Debate

Hi all,

I've been going back and forth with Sekiro and Onimusha. Juggling the difficulty comparison and mechanics/feel of the games etc till I eventually made a video about it.

And my ultimate aim is to show differentiation and reasons for that in these 2 titles.

See you there and thanks for checking it, if you did. Peace.

Remasters

I loved the demo and was thinking of getting the previous titles and had a few questions to see if it’s worth it.

First how outdated or clunky do the previous titles feel, I don’t mind a little jank but of course don’t want something that doesn’t feel good.

Second I know the titles are not souls likes but are known to be difficult, is this a game where I can over level if I hit a wall? For example I have beaten all the team ninja games and a lot of difficult games with the exception being Sekiro which I did not enjoy the gameplay or combat very much.
