Who's going to the Lightning Ridge Opal festival on the 29th?

Anyone else going to be at the Opal Festival in Lightning Ridge from the 29th? Would love to grab a beer with some other opal redditors.

What did I buy??

I purchased this from a street vendor in S.L.P. Mexico.
He said it’s opal from a state in Mexico
It looked so pretty for like 2 days and now it’s begun to loose its color.

Inherited Opals

Hello Opal Family - Long time lurker, first time poster. I inherited these 2 small opals and while I love opals, I don’t know how to identify them or even tell between lab and natural. Any insight into these 2? Considering having one or both reset into something I would wear. Thanks in advance!

Should It Be Kept In Water, or Removed?

I admit I'm not well informed about opals, I have skimmed over other info sites but I have not found an exact answer about this.
Recently I acquired this Ethiopian opal, it was originally sold stored in water however the display case began leaking and I was considering if I should just take it out and display it dry.
I own a few other opal pieces, however they are not raw like this one. Would it be safe to remove from the water and keep dry, or is it best kept submerged? I don't want to make any decision without being educated and risk damaging the stone.

First time poster.

Is it white opal or boulder opal?

Found this old pendant at local market with an Australian opal. Removed the stone from the pendant, cleaned it up and set it into a sterling silver ring. Great play of color with greens, golds, pinks and oranges. It has quite a few brown veins going through the rock, which gives it a really organic feel. I'm wondering if this is considered white opal or boulder opal?

Hi everyone!

I’m Gabe, the owner of Luna Flare Opal Co., a veteran-owned small business based in Michigan.

I’ve been cutting Australian opals for the past year and primarily work with rough sourced directly from Australian miners. Most of what I cut ends up as calibrated cabochons or sterling silver jewelry, though I also offer loose finished opals and select rough opal parcels.

I’ve learned a lot from communities like this while getting into lapidary, so I’d like to give back where I can. If anyone has questions about Australian opals, cutting, polishing, identifying material, or sourcing rough, I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned. I’m still learning too, and I enjoy seeing what everyone else is working on.

If you’d like to follow along or check out my work:

Looking forward to being part of the community!

White or yellow gold for body jewelry?

These tiny (3x5mm) lightning ridge opals are going to become body jewelry! I’m in talks with a local piercing studio who wants to stock some natural opal pieces.

But I’m curious if I should set them into white or yellow 14k gold. What is people’s preference for body jewelry? Think septum piercings or non lobe ear piercings.

Three of them have this gorgeous cat’s eye and I can’t wait to start working on them.

Question about inlay

Morning, I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how to make precise cuts and mitres like in this ring. I have made opal inlay rings before but have wanted to attempt something like this or something with more mitre cuts in it. Im really interested to know how its done. Google has said to use diamond files to get a precise join but id like to hear your thought before I attempt it.

What is this opal

I just bought it for $525 on an auction. 14k gold with real diamonds. Weighs 4.8 grams. Not trying to sell it. I know nothing of opals. Did i get a good deal? How much would a stand alone opal like this cost? Size of stone is 1/4 in by around 1/3rd in. Did i get a good deal or overpay?

I hit the jackpot at a thrift store

The other day I bought a basket from my local thrift store for $1.50… whenever I opened it there were 4 tiny little opals with a receipt saying they were from South Australia. I need to take better pics but do you know how much these would go for if I brought them to a jeweler?? They look they were made for rings.
