Spotted at the Field Museum in Chicago

Obviously not mine lol photos taken from the museum display. But they were so stunning, I couldn't resist sharing here. The jewelry piece was labelled as being an 87 carat black opal brooch set in gold, while the standalone had no weight/measurements, just said "polished slice of black opal" from Australia. Wish I'd had time to take a quick video for the color play, but it photographed so well with the special lighting, I was pretty satisfied with the quick snaps! Enjoy ☺️

First Opal purchase, need help

I’m looking to purchase this Opal as my first one! I have only what the seller has told me about it to go off of. I don’t know how to spot fakes, so I have no frame of reference for how authentic this is. Here’s what they claim it is:

Solid
Natural Ethiopian
Untreated
Set in 925 sterling silver
22mm Length x 13mm Width x 8mm Depth
8.7 Carat

They are based out of Jaipur india.

Any insights would be appreciated

my favorite piece in my collection :)

I work at a jewelry store and they want me taking pictures of their pieces, but as a practice run I took some shots of my favorite specimen from my collection that I keep at my desk! I got it as a Christmas Gift from the owner of a mineral/rock store I used to work at 6 years ago and it holds a lot of meaning to me. I'm guessing it's from Queensland, don't know the mine. I've always thought it looked like a slice of cake :)

I don't know why the first picture is so saturated, I'm still getting used to this camera/lightbox lol, all I did for editing was turn up the exposure a bit.

Disappointed.

Heavily disappointed in this subreddit because the gatekeeping here is exhausting.

If you aren't one of the same five regular sellers always here or posting a piece of museum-grade Australian rough, you get completely ignored. New collectors come here excited to show off their first modest purchase or ask an honest question about a stone, and they get met with absolute silence. Meanwhile, the top posts are just the same people back slapping each other over the same inventory.

A hobby community should be about lifting up newcomers, and spreading useful information for everyone, not ignoring those entirely who don’t have investment level pieces.

Approximately how much would you say this LR solid black 1.15 ct opal would be worth?

Australian lightning ridge Opal, I think it’s N1 B3 - I’m new to opals and struggling to put a price on it. Red flashes in some lights

Post Update

Posted on my other account but it was taken down due to low karma I guess. I posted my Australian lightning ridge opal rough stones and was asked for a better visual in natural light. Here’s a video of them in distilled water exposed to natural sunlight.

Pulled the trigger on this opal pendant

Been watching this doublet pendant for a couple of years and finally purchased it. It’s a pretty good size.

Fossil Opal?

Hi I’ve been working on this piece for ages it’s got colour bars/veins everywhere just wanted some insight on this piece as it’s from a old miner that a friend of mine gifted me to play with and I’m realising there’s so many incredible pieces in the bucket I was given - this one is the most interesting I think tho

Discoloured opal

Hi all,

My family got me an opal pendant about two years ago and I had no idea they were so porous. I wore it a couple of times in the summer, so sunscreen was involved and now the opal is pretty yellow. This is it after a very very light and brief swish in lukewarm water and gentle soap. Is there any saving it or is it completely toast/stuck this yellow colour forever? Thank you 😭

Custom made Aussie Opal Ring

My jeweler made this opal ring for me after finding this gorgeous 6.5 carat Australian Crystal opal. He set it with a .52 carat diamond halo and in an 18k gold setting.
