Shoulders hurting during reformer footwork?

Sometimes the issue isn’t your shoulders it’s your setup. Moving slightly away from the shoulder blocks, reducing spring resistance, relaxing your upper body, and focusing on pelvic stability, breathing, and core engagement can make a big difference.

Pilates isn’t about using the heaviest springs. It’s about control, alignment, stability, and intentional movement.

How long should a good Pilates reformer actually last?

I put together a lifespan guide for the main reformer parts because I think buyers often assume the whole machine either “lasts forever” or needs replacing after a few years. In reality, the frame and the wear parts are very different.

Assuming fairly heavy use — about 5 days a week, 2 hours a day — here’s a practical estimate:

  • Hardwood frame: 20+ years to lifetime with proper care
  • Aluminum frame: around 7–10 years
  • Rails: 3–5 years, potentially up to 10 with good maintenance
  • Carriage wheels: 1–2 years
  • Springs: 2–3 years
  • Ropes: 1–2 years
  • Pulleys: 5–10 years
  • Carriage bearings: 3–5 years
  • Upholstery cushion: 5–10 years
  • Foam padding: 8–12 years
  • Shoulder blocks: 5–10 years
  • Footbar: 10–20 years
  • Footbar padding: 2–5 years
  • Risers: 2–5 years
  • Stoppers: 1–2 years
  • Screws/hardware: 5–10+ years, but they should be inspected and tightened regularly
  • Foldable hinges: 5–10 years
  • Hydraulic/gas folding assist: around 5–8 years
  • Jumpboard: 10+ years
  • Pilates box: 10–20 years

The biggest thing I learned is that a good reformer should be viewed more like a car than a disposable fitness machine.

The frame should last a very long time. What you replace periodically are the normal wear items: springs, ropes, wheels, stoppers, padding, and sometimes bearings.

Maintenance makes a huge difference too. Dirty rails, worn wheels, direct sunlight, humidity, harsh cleaning chemicals, and loose hardware can shorten the life of a reformer significantly.

For wooden reformers, keeping the frame clean and waxing it every 6–12 months can help protect the wood for decades.

Pilates Mistakes: Does Your Lower Back Work Harder Than Your Glutes During Bridges?

I'm curious how common this is because I see it discussed quite a bit.

One thing I've noticed is that many people try to lift their hips as high as possible. Once the hips have reached their available extension, continuing to push higher may mean the extra movement is coming more from the lower back than the hips.

A few cues that may help:

  • Think "long," not "high."
  • Try to create a long line from your shoulders toward your knees.
  • Let your glutes drive the movement instead of forcing your lower back to create more height.
  • Keep your ribs relatively controlled rather than flaring upward.
  • Stop at the highest position you can comfortably control.

The goal of a bridge isn't necessarily the biggest range of motion it's quality of movement.

Why Two 90" Pilates Reformers Can Feel Completely Different

I realized a lot of people compare reformers the wrong way...

I'm the founder of PersonalHour, so I spend a lot of time discussing reformers with customers. One thing I hear all the time is: "This reformer is 90 inches long, so it should fit anyone."

Not necessarily.

Two reformers can both be 90 inches long and feel completely different because of how they're designed.

Here are the measurements I think people should compare before buying:

1. Usable carriage travel

This is probably the most overlooked specification.

It's the distance the carriage can actually move during an exercise not the overall frame length.

For taller users, this often matters more than whether the reformer is 88" or 90".

2. Measure your inseam not just your height

Two people can both be 5'10", but one has a 30" inseam while the other has a 35" inseam.

The second person will usually need more carriage travel.

A practical comparison formula I use is:

Recommended carriage travel ≈ Inseam × 0.60–0.65

Example:

30" inseam → about 18–19.5" travel

32" inseam → about 19–21" travel

34" inseam → about 20–22" travel

36" inseam → about 22–23.5" travel

This isn't an official Pilates standard—just a practical way to compare machines that have different geometries.

3. Ask about the shoulder-rest-to-footbar distance

Most manufacturers don't list this.

But during footwork, that's the space your body actually uses.

If it's too short, your knees may start excessively bent before the exercise even begins.

4. Carriage width matters too

A wider carriage isn't only for heavier users.

If you have broad shoulders, spend a lot of time in side-lying work, planks, or kneeling exercises, a wider carriage can simply feel more comfortable.

5. Spring length isn't the same as spring performance

People often compare spring colors or lengths.

The important part is the working range.

As the carriage moves, the springs extend. That extension needs to be engineered for that specific reformer. Two springs with the same relaxed length can feel completely different because of:

  • Spring rate
  • Wire diameter
  • Coil count
  • Preload
  • Maximum safe extension
  • Attachment geometry

Before buying a reformer, I'd ask these questions:

  • What is the usable carriage travel?
  • What is the carriage size (length and width)?
  • What is the distance from the shoulder rests to the footbar?
  • How adjustable is the footbar?
  • What is the recommended user height?
  • What is the tested weight capacity?
  • Are the ropes adjustable enough for taller users?
