The #1 mistake people make when introducing dogs (and the 3-step fix)

We’ve all seen it: two owners approach each other head-on, leashes pulled tight like guitar strings, forcing their dogs into a tense, nose-to-nose standoff. Cue the sudden snapping, barking, or awkward tangled mess.

Dogs hate head-on, static greetings. To them, direct eye contact and a stiff approach feels like a confrontation, not a friendly hello.
If you want a seamless, drama-free introduction, use the Parallel Walk Method. Here is the quick 3-step breakdown:

1. Neutral Territory & Constant Motion: Meet in a park or a street neither dog "owns." Do not stand still. Immediately start walking in the same direction, keeping about 10–15 feet of distance between you.

2. Burn the Energy First: Walking side-by-side gives them a shared "mission." It lets them catch each other’s scent from the air and ground, burning off that initial frantic adrenaline without the pressure of direct eye contact.

3. The 3-Second Rule: Once both dogs have loose, relaxed body language, close the gap and let them sniff. Count 1... 2... 3... in your head, then gently call them away with praise and a treat before tension can build. You can always loop back for another quick sniff.

Keep the leashes loose, keep moving, and let them be dogs!

What’s your go-to trick for introducing your pup to a new friend?
