Vi's tattoo on some guy

Noticed this at the bookstore today! Vi's tattoo is such a big part of her design, I'm not sure if this is a coincidence?

Shanghai Musical Notes

Shanghai’s Immersive Arcane play was super cool! My Chinese is pretty ass, so I honestly didn’t understand a good chunk of the dialogue, but if you know the story, it’s roughly enough, I think the acting/special effects/dancing/immersive elements still make it very worth watching.

The Fantastic Caitvi scene is an encore after the main show ends. It’s, well, fantastic.

The Vi and Silco’s actors in particular were amazing.

Some notes are below. (Take everything with a grain of salt as I am an idiot who barely speaks the language. Might’ve missed or misunderstood things.)

- When they say immersive, they really mean immersive. You are on your feet moving around and looking around, mostly in a giant 2 story room. If you get there and check in early, you have some time to explore. The action happens all around you - for example, the Hextech theft enforcer chase happens all over the place with multiple characters running up and down the room, up and down floors, potentially running by literally 1 foot away from you. You can follow your favorite character if you want, so long as you don’t go into a restricted area.

- The bottom floor has a main “stage” area. That’s the “main plot”, and it primarily follows Jinx, Vi, Silco, and Vander in Zaun.

- The bottom floor also has side rooms where you can catch more intimate character moments, like Vander and Vi’s convo about the price of rebellion, or Powder creating the monkey bomb.

- The top floor isn’t a full floor, it’s more like a U shaped balcony. The Piltoverian characters mostly stay here, though they do sometimes come down to Zaun.

- If you want to see the Piltoverian characters (Jayce, Viktor, Cait, Mel, Cassandra), you have to go upstairs. If you stay downstairs, you’re going to miss the vast majority of that plot. If you stay downstairs, Cait shows up for a few Caitvi moments. Jayce basically only shows up to talk about Hextech and offer a deal to Silco. Viktor and Mel are basically nonexistent. I can’t really comment about most of the upper floor stuff as I barely spent time there.

- Make sure you’re always near characters once the show starts. You don’t want to loiter in a side room where nothing is going on, and end up missing key plot/character moments. If you are in a side room and no named character is there, go back to the main room! If you’re lost and/or don’t want to follow characters around, staying on the bottom floor of the main stage area is probably a safe bet. Unless you love the Piltoverian characters more, in which case you could probably loiter upstairs and look down on the bottom main stage.

- You should stay aware of your surroundings, as characters may actually run by you, and you don’t want to be in their way. Staff may also direct you around when large set pieces get moved.

- The props and design are immaculate. Sound effects, background dancers, special effects, music, etc. are great. Amazing Chinese versions of major Arcane songs, and also some other League of Legends iconic ones like Warriors and Legends Never Die. Vi in particular was an amazing singer.

- There is little to no seating around the main stage, and there’s some in the side rooms, but it’s sparse and often not where you’d want to be. You’re probably going to be standing most of the time. This show is definitely meant for younger and more mobile people. Also not great for people with sensory issues (so much going on, and some loud noises and flashing lights).

- No bags allowed (lockers provided), and phones must be silenced in a locked bag they provide. Everyone had their phones locked up during the main show. Once the show ends and everyone takes their bows though, it’s pretty much fair game, people just rip their phones out of the bag. Everyone was recording the encore Fantastic scene.

- The crowd is mostly 20 somethings. Also, I saw more dyed hair and alt/queer looking people here than I did the rest of my China trip combined lol.

- Plot changes: no Isha, no Ekko, no AU, Jinx doesn’t get imprisoned, Jinx and Vi reconcile more through Vander-Warwick. Not entirely sure what happened with Noxus/Viktor, as I was on the bottom floor and missed most of it. Not sure if I missed anything, but Jinx seems a bit more dead in this ending than the Netflix ending.

- If you really love Arcane, and you have the time/patience/stamina/money, I’d highly recommend watching it multiple times. It’s really easy to miss things. I’d love to watch it again and follow the Piltoverian cast more.
