Looking for things to do in the area! (23M)

Hey! I'm not necessarily new to Portsmouth (been here for ~1yr now), just getting out of a bit of a rut.

I'm a bit of a nerd (card games, DND) who loves rock & metal and was looking for spots in the area that are fun and where I can meet people!

I was also looking at getting into a sporting club, it would be absolutely perfect if anyone has any clubs they recommend or have been to in the past.

If anyone has any recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it! :)

A book about Portsmouth, kind of

Hello there! Long story short: I am Polish, I have lived my entire life in Poland, I have never been to Portsmouth, and yet somehow I wrote a book about several young gentlemen from The Point who set off from Spithead on a naval adventure. Yes, I'm well aware of how ridiculous that sounds.

The book is very short and in Polish, and will probably end up in a drawer permanently. That does not mean I don't care whether it's actually any good and somewhat accurate.

Now, here's the request. I am looking for some kind soul familiar with Portsmouth to read the first few very short chapters and point out anything that immediately sounds wrong. I'm more than happy to buy you a pint in return — somehow — despite not actually living in the UK. ;-)

My personal translator, Mr G.P.T. Chatovsky, will help me prepare an English version of said chapters pretty quickly.

Anyone up to the task?

Where would you live?

Currently live in Portsmouth, have done my whole life.

Frankly, I'm sick of it. The car park to my flat has been turned into short stay so I can no longer park in it, I have to walk over 2 minutes every time to my car now when the car park is dead empty.

Parking anywhere is non existent.

I plan on moving out of my flat in 2 years with my partner to buy a house. I can't buy a house with a driveway in Portsmouth and having somewhere to park is a big big thing for us.

Where would you recommend? still close by as my family live in Portsmouth.

Originally I was thinking Fareham. My partner has a new job starting in Gosport and I work in Farlington.

Now I'm thinking Gosport. Cheaper(ish) houses, more parking, can find a place with a driveway.

Is there anywhere else you'd recommend? Hopefully the budget will be £300-£325k

I just want to know how it is living in different places.

Chronic Pain Experience in Chicago Museums

I need 1-3 people to help me out with the last step of my research for my PhD in Architecture, focusing on Disability in Museums at the University of Portsmouth. My thesis title is ‘More Than Just a Ramp: A Detailed Look at Bodies with Chronic Pain within the Museum Space’.

If you have chronic pain and have been to any of the following:

•Chicago Cultural Center in Chicago, IL, USA
•Chicago History Museum in Chicago, IL, USA
•Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL, USA

I would love to ask you some questions via email about your experience [you can answer none/any/all of the questions and can be anonymous]. There is no compensation for this, though I will send you a thank you note covered in stickers and a picture of my dog!

Please feel free to DM me or email me at my school email at Gabriel.Seck@myport.ac.uk

Fire in Eastney yesterday

All credit to Portsmouth News, I pinched this from their Instagram.

Absolutely crazy!!! Glad local residents could put it out. Anyone have more information on what happened?

If you're walking your dog on the street whilst it's 30°c outside...

... Dinlo is too kind a word. You're a cunt.

And if you happen to be walking on the sunny side of the road (when shade is available) and DRAG your dog away from a water bowl, I don't have words to describe what a deplorable human you are.

And if any of you know the boomer cunt I've just had this conversation with on Osborne Road, have a word. The dog was CLEARLY suffering.

Best Coffee shop for work

Hiya

Since the bad signal I’m having in southsea (I live literally opposite the beach) I sometimes need to go to Costa to work as the internet speed is garbage… (my provider is Vodafone and only 5G broadband can be used)

I was looking for a different place to work remotely rather than Costa.

Possibility in Southsea with good space and WiFi/phone signal.

I would like to give my money to a small business rather than Costa

Victorious main stage location

Anyone else noticed how far forward the main stage is this year? It’s halved the main stage area

Wondered if anyone knew why? Less ticket sales or something going to behind the stage maybe?

How bad is Bateson Hall? (uni)

I'll be attending UoP in a few weeks, and I got assigned to Bateson Hall. To my dismay, I haven't heard much good about it, but I feel like it has everything I need and tbh I can't really complain given the cheaper rent.

I'm just worried about noise pollution in the rooms (so that I can buy noise cancelling headphones and also not be noisy to others) and whether there are shops nearby where I can get my daily needs like medicine and grocery, so any info on these would help!

How dangerous is Portsmouth?

Ive been thinking about going through clearing for Uni of Portsmouth, but my Grandad and Dad both had the assumption that Portsmouth was a really dodgy place? It threw me off a bit as ive only heard good things about the uni.

I have checked the official Portsmouth stats and they are relatively higher than the average in Hampshire and increases slightly year by year. As a uni student I was wondering if there are ‘dodgy’ areas around the uni? Or maybe they’re further away and that’s giving all of Portsmouth a bad rep.

NFL Fantasy Football

I am curious if there is any interest in starting up a local fantasy football league in the Portsmouth area. I'm thinking it could be a good opportunity to meet new people while having fun playing FF.

Where to live to commute to QA Hospital, Portsmouth?

Hi - I am looking for recommendations for nice areas to live in while commuting to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. Priorities are family-friendly, good schools (I have 2 kids), nice parks, safety, a maximum of a 30-minute drive to the hospital, and preferably not Reform-friendly. I did some preliminary research, and it seems that Emsworth and Drayton tick the boxes, but looking for some advice

Portsmouth districts make no sense

Where does one area start and one begin? No-one seems to agree. Where does say, North End finish and Stamshaw begin? I live in Oriel Road...is that North End, Stamshaw or Hilsea?
