Day after thoughts?

What are your thoughts now the initial anger / disappointment has worn off?

Defence & GK: still some serious concerns here, be paid £500k for a new GK, I can’t imagine that was for a backup.

We need a LB and personally I would really like a RB who’s a bit faster/ more attacking and let Devlin play in midfield

Midfield: Shein looks really tidy and will partner well with Adam’s, not sure we have much depth in that position

Sega isn’t a creative threat at 10 but provides a better goal threat it will be interesting to see if we lack creativity

Brooke-Smith doesn’t look ready, and I’m sure he wasn’t brought in to be a starter

Bishop, sigh, his link up play and effort was really good again, but he never looks like scoring, I would personally like to see him in a 442 with Marezi

Mou: I feel like once again he was too slow to react, playing 30 minutes at 3-1 down before changing the shape was frustrating

Overall I think the squad looks stronger this year, but with so many new players it will take time to get them all at their best

The 'Club in Decline' league table

I went down a bit of a football rabbit hole wondering which professional club has managed the longest run of finishing lower in its domestic league pyramid every single season.

The longest run I’ve found so far is Portsmouth: seven consecutive declines across eight seasons, from 8th in the Premier League in 2007/08 all the way to 16th in League Two in 2014/15.

Barnsley and Tranmere hold the dubious honour of the longest active streak with five consecutive declines.

England are probably strongly represented because of their very large and competitive professional pyramid and clubs from Türkiye look like they have been beset with financial and mismanagement issues.

I've probably missed some obscure ones. I wonder if there is a pretender to Portsmouth's crown?

We need a shithouse superstar

Without Pack/Doyle, we lack a leader who can wind up the opposition, play off the ref, and bring the momentum back in our favour.

Hydration breaks arent going away. We lost all momentum after that and I don't think Mous has the fire to keep them going.

Portsmouth V QPR preview thread

EFL Championship - match day 1

First game of the 26/27 Season! I'm looking forward to the season ahead, think we've made some great signings and hoping we can push on and end the season well clear of the relegation zone and assert ourselves as a mid-table championship side. I think today will be a tough one but think we'll win 2-1, an Abu masterclass incoming. Please post your score predictions below! Play up Pompey!

Stadium - Fratton Park

TEAM NEWS
Thomas Waddingham is set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring his ankle ligaments shortly after coming off the bench at West Ham.

Benjamin Arthur, Odin Bailey, Daniel Bielica, Luke Brooke-Smith, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Eoin Kenny, Rocco Shein and Marko Milovanović will all be looking to make their Fratton Park debuts, while Abu Kamara could also feature following his return to the club.

But Keshi Anderson (quad), Harvey Blair (hip), Josef Bursik (quad), Márk Kosznovszky (knee), Josh Murphy (groin), Connor Ogilvie (knee), Marlon Pack (knee) and Franco Umeh (hamstring) are expected to miss out.

Karamoko Dembélé (knee), Tariq Lamptey (knee) and Justin Obikwu (shin) are all expected to be absent for the visitors.

John Mousinho said: “I’m looking forward to getting back to Fratton Park, where the atmosphere is always very special, especially for that first home game.

“Our fans know the challenge we always face in the Championship and I’m sure there will be huge amounts of both realism and positivity.

“QPR have really developed in terms of the way they play, although a lot of their personnel at the weekend will be what we saw last season.”

MINUTE'S APPLAUSE
A minute's applause will be held before kick-off to remember former Pompey boss Kenny Jackett, along with ex-players Bill Albury and Peter Higham, who have all sadly passed away since the end of last season.

Benjamin Arthur: Portsmouth sign Brentford defender on loan

I’d have thought this means one of the existing CB’s will be going out on loan. Who do you think it will be?

Awaydays

I’ve been going to 10-15 home games a season for the past five years but not done an away game yet.

I am tempted to go Bristol City away on August 29th as we have a 3.4k allocation but I’d be going solo. Is this a done thing? And in terms of the Pompey awayend, what’s it like? Do people sit/stand anywhere? Or is that frowned upon? I’ve done away games with mates who support clubs like Gillingham, Swansea, Peterborough and you go where you want but given Pompey is such a well supported travelling fan base I wasn’t sure if that was the same? Anything else I should know?

Also does the club put coaches on for away games? Fortunately the train to Bristol is direct so might do that but weighing up my options.

Cheers!
