Need reality check and insight on budget for incoming 1L

Incoming 1L sa UP Diliman CoL here. My daily commute will be roughly 3 hours total, can be more or less depending on rush hour. It'll be 3 rides each way — jeep, LRT, 8 min walk, jeep, 8 min walk.

My family is considering whether renting a bedspace is worth it. Our maximum monthly budget for all expenses is 10k. This can't be stretched. It's already a lot. We're thinking of finding a bedspace for 5k max all-in (wifi, water, electricity), where I can also cook to save on food costs. I've been looking on Facebook and it seems like may mahahanap naman, although a kitchen is more difficult to find. I'll be going home on weekends to do laundry and eat there too.

My questions are:

  • Is the 10k budget going to be enough?
  • Is it worth it, or should I just deal with the 3 hour commute?

I'm admittedly not a stellar student, so I know I can benefit from all the extra time I can get. Plus, I'm not particularly physically fit. Nakakapagod. But my family has doubts about whether the budget will be enough. And studying on an empty stomach is going to suck.

I'll be applying for the scholarship, but I'm not getting my hopes up for it. I'll try for the UP dorms din next sem, because I sadly missed the opening 🥹

Any insight or advice would be appreciated. Thank you for reading!

last minute dilemma

so i recently took UPLAE, ALSAT, and SBCOL Exam. my top prio is UP cz it's near our place (katip area), however, i didn't pass, the same goes with ALS. san beda has always been in my choices naman even before going to college. but nasasayangan lang me sa opportunity that UP may offer me in the future. one of my mentors (who also studied in UPCOL) advised i take a gap year daw if want ko talaga UP cz marami din talaga benefits and it's not that rigorous like san beda 🥹.. i've been thinking abt his advice and now im kinda having second thoughts abt san beda

UST FCL confirmation of enrollment

Hello! to those who passed UST FCL I am from batch 2 and I have a question regarding enrollment and reservation, especially those from batch 1, after submitting the confirmation form do I need to expect an email confirming the submission? If there is a confirmation, will the guidelines for enrollment be sent along that? Is there any reservation fees after confirming? Im a little bit anxious kasi lalo na wala akong balita about reservation fees. Thank youu!

Is there hope for those waitlisted sa UST?

I passed TDSOL but I had to drop it due to financial reasons. (ang mahal naman kase ng living cost sa bgc haha). The only law schools left for me are Arellano, UST, and La salle dasma.

My original goal was UST, dream school ko na yan noon pa, but unfortunately na waitlist ako. (im losing hope kase sabi nila kaunti lang daw talaga pinapasa this year)

Arrellano is a negative rin since my internship does not end until july 19. I'd be missing the late enrollments.

La salle dasma's result will be revealed by the 13th.

Things are looking uncertain but should I wait out the waitlist or go for law school with a more surefire admission? Should I waitout la salle dasma?

Hindi ko na alam. Halos isang buwan na akong sleep deprived from thinking.

Has anyone successfully withdrawn from TDSOL after enrollment?

Hi! I enrolled at TDSOL last July 1, but I’ve changed my mind and decided to pursue UST instead, although I’m still waiting to see if I’ll get accepted.

Is it still possible to withdraw my enrollment from TDSOL and retrieve the original documents I submitted so I can pass them to UST? Has anyone here gone through the same process? I’d really appreciate any advice.

Thank you!

WHEN: UST FCL BATCH 3 RESULTS

Hello! For those who’ve already been interviewed, did they tell you when they’ll release the results? I read in a support group (fb) that results might come out around the 2nd or 3rd week of August. I wasn't expecting them to be released that late. 😭

SBU Class Schedule

Hello! Can I immediately secure my schedule na if I already paid the down payment? Plus are students allowed to plot their own schedules?

Also, does SBU COL have uniforms or none provided the dress code (assuming there is) is followed?

Thank you :)

Need Advice: Manila School or State University Close to Home?

Hello! I’m torn between choosing a university outside our hometown and a state university near our city.

My main concern is housing. I know I’m the type of learner who really values having a comfortable place to study, especially knowing how demanding law school can be. But it’s been hard to find a place in Manila where I can actually see myself feeling comfortable and at peace.
The state university near our city offers that peace of mind since I’d be close to home, but I’m scared I might miss out on a lot of opportunities if I let go of the Manila school. At the same time, I’m also worried that if I choose Manila, I’ll always have that lingering “what if” about how things could have turned out had I chosen the state university instead.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? I’d really appreciate any advice or insights.

SC Decisions format needs to change. SCOTUS' format is the way to go.

Hi, this might be a super niche topic LOL pero hindi ba pwedeng gamitin ng Supreme Court natin ang format ng SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) decisions? Saan pwede mag request? HAHAHAHA

I write articles for law school journals and I do a lot of legal research of both US and Philippine case law. And for those who write alam ko makakarelate kayo hahaha.

Tbh, ang gulo and andaming nangyayari when I read cases from our Supreme Court, iba-iba format, may signature pa and all. Pwede bang isang format lang kahit sa separate dissenting/concurring opinion?

Like, can we just make it as neat as SCOTUS decisions and use in-line citation if ever? Ginagawa kasi minsang mini-essay na pag footnote gamit eh.

In the same vein, sana pwede ding magkaron ng access to full docket of cases filed in our Supreme Court. Sa SCOTUS, lahat ng documents filed in a specific case, andoon. As someone who likes to read parties briefs, nakakalungkot na Decisions/Resolutions lang accessible. Sometimes, Petitions pero for more known cases lang like Dutertes lol.

But I speculate it's because of the budget, but who knows?

Who is, what is, and what does a lawyer do?

Na realized ko to dahil I have a lot of classmates and even lawyers, hindi alam kung ano ginagawa ng lawyers as a whole.

Mostly, ang alam ng karamihan is litigation lang ang ginagawa ng lawyers.

As a person who came from a family of lawyers (Parents, Siblings, Grandparents, uncle and aunts, and cousins) ito ang natutunan ko.

Mga lawyers ay nag sosolve ng problem, nag bibigay ng solution to a problem/s, or improve the situation of clients.

Mga possible clients are

Persons or entities (corporations, associations, partnerships, organizations, and cooperatives including the government)

Pwede rin that you are hired (employed and you are only helping your employer)

For both (possible clients) pag may conflict - lawyers ang nag bibigay ng possible arguments para maging in favor sa clients nila. Including strategies on how to lean sa favor ng client including settlements and procedures sa court.

Also, pwede rin i-improve ng lawyers ang buhay ng clients like planning for the future(estate planning), how to prevent litigation (preventing na ma filelan ng kaso), how to improve profit and reduce expeses gamit ang batas, and even taxes.

The case of Cayetano v. Monsod, also mentioned teaching in institutions like review centers and schools. (Academe)

Walang lawyers pag walang nag tuturo.

For litigation, ito yung common na practice, meaning mapupunta sa court dahil hindi ma ayos ang problema through settlement or hindi kayang pag usapan. Si Judge mag dedecide non, si Judge is also a lawyer.

Dalawa lagi ang parties dito. Yung platiff (ang nag file ng kaso) and yung defendant (yung finilan ng kaso)

As a lawyer, ang client mo is either one.

Furthermore, maraming fields ang law. The following ang possible fields pero hindi lang limited dito, so better have a specialty so that makikilala ka sa field of practice mo:

  1. Business/corporate - negosyo ang client mo rito, helping them improve their businesses including compliance(requirements kung paano mag patayo ng negosyo)

  2. Tax - pinababa mo ang taxes nila(legally) or how to make them exempt (hindi mag babayad ng tax legally)

  3. Criminal law- you will defend the accused or you will prosecute them (gusto mo mag bigay ng justice sa client mo)

  4. Civil law - whenever na may rights involve between persons or entities that is not criminal in nature dito na yun papasok including real property(land or buildings), or personal property (mga pwedeng ma move like cars, cellphone, pera, etc), including mga status [married, marital or non-marital (formerly as legitimate or illegitimate)]. Malawak ang field ng civil law including succession, family, etc. Ma didiscover mo rin while in law school.

  5. Labor law - mga rights ng mga businesses (employer) kung paano sila mag hire ng tao, paano tatanggalin ang empleyado, the process ng pag hire and fire, and sa pag sahod. Including the rights ng mga empleyado (employee), para balance ang lahat.

  6. Government law - ito yung pinakamalawak since sobrang dami yung fields since imagine mo lang lahat ng Departments ng Government dito sa pinas kailangan ng lawyers like COMELEC, SEC, BSP, BIR, Judiciary, Legislative, LGUs, DepEd, Etc,. Each has their own field, kahit hindi tinuro nung law school yung field pwede mong pasukan like AFP, DOST, Maritime, Aeronautics, Agirculture, etc.

Also may litigation din sa government like PAO, Prosecutor, Judiciary, and even agencies pag finilan sila ng kaso.

  1. Other fields - sa sobrang lawak ang pwede mong pasukan in the field of law, sobrang dami ang pwedeng gawin ng isang lawyer including magiging part ng UN, ICC, etc.

So ikaw? Anong field of law ang gusto mo? Anong rights ang gusto mong idefend? May it be human rights, rights of the businesses, rights ng animals, or even rights ng Pilipinas as a whole. Kung hindi mo alam ang gagawin mo or don't like what you are practicing, you can always transfer sa different field. Sobrang lawak ang field ng law.
