Terrible speeds

Transitioning from Nord for reasons, testing out Proton and not getting even close what I can through previous supplier.

Is anybody getting their non-VPN speeds? Had barely any drop in the past and would be able to do 1.5Gbps and sometimes more and now with different protocols not even 200Mbps on the DL. Upstream somehow can saturate.

Pulled the trigger after reading all the positives of Proton but not very happy with the start.

So many websites unusable - what am I doing wrong?

So many websites won't load when connected to Proton. It doesn't seem to change regardless of the server I'm connected to. Sites like Verizon, Carvana, Claro will not load or refuse access. Every google search results in a Captcha request.

I know this can be an issue with VPNs, but are there any solutions to try to curb it? Otherwise Proton (or any VPN with these issues) is unusable for daily functions.

TIA

Network Mapped drive disconnects when connected to VPN (Windows 11)

Anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT: turning on the "access devices by name" option fixed it.

Proton VPN breaks after a certain time

Hey guys! So I use the Wireguard configurations you can create and since yesterday, the VPN just breaks after around one hour. I first thought that this has to do with RethinkDNS, because I use my Wireguard config on Android in it, but now it also happens on my Fedora Laptop. I created some configs without NAT-PMP on and the same thing happens. I am on the free plan and I only use free servers in the Netherlands or Switzerland.

(This happened again while I tried to post this)

Auto-connect on certain network

Because Proton VPN's Android app still doesn't have any auto-connect options, can someone share an available workaround? I thought I might be able to achieve this using Samsung Modes, but that requires the VPN to be set up manually in settings, which according to Proton support isn't possible.

Really frustrating that such a basic feature is still missing, despite having been requested for years now, and being offered by all of their competitors.

YouTube is the final boss

Hello, everyone!

I hope you're all doing well.

It turns out that I have my VPN set to Brazil, using the “Stealth” protocol, and yet YouTube still detects it.

Why is that, and is there a solution?

I look forward to reading your comments.

Best regards.

Is it just me, or are the native apps just infuriatingly bad?

I'm legitimately on the verge of changing providers, and I think I will be when my plan expires. The native apps on Windows (granted this one is a lot better), iOS, and MacOS are just so awful and I have repeatedly had issues with them.

As we speak, despite having split tunneling enabled, my entire device's traffic is being noticeably slowed down. And there's plenty of other issues too, such as the lack of anything but IPv4 for custom DNS, where support for DNS over HTTPS should be expected from any modern service. And the inability to exclude your current country from the "fastest location" button, at least on most devices. I'd also like to draw attention to the fact that development on the official apps is incredibly slow, and most suggestions on here are not, and never will be implemented

Now, this would all be easily forgivable if it was possible to just use third party apps. But of course, Proton seems to dislike the idea of giving users freedom in that regard. Not only have they deliberately made this harder by limiting the amount of servers you can see when downloading config files, and deprecating their API, but even if you do want to download configurations, you'll have to manually download each individual server you may want to connect to (and go download a new one if it gets changed). Other providers are way more lenient with this stuff and make it considerably easier. Hell, providers like Mullvad and IVPN are really easy to integrate with third party clients and have gone out of their way to offer support.

Apologies for the rant of sorts — it pains me to be saying all this. ProtonVPN is generally pretty great, and I value the commitment to privacy. But damn, am I really the only one absolutely fed up with these terrible apps? Please leave your opinions below, I'm genuinely curious. And if any Proton employees are reading this, for the love of god please just make it easier to use third party apps, that would satisfy me and most others.

Please improve NetShield, it’s currently falling behind specialized third-party DNS filters like AdGuard, Hagezi, and OISD.

Hi Proton VPN team,

I’m a long-time Proton VPN user, and I wanted to share some feedback regarding NetShield.

Currently, I find myself configuring my web browsers (on both my PC and smartphone) to use specialized third-party DNS filters (such as AdGuard, Hagezi, or OISD) directly within the browser settings. Outside of the browser, I rely on the default DNS provided by Proton VPN. Even though I’d love to keep everything under the Proton ecosystem, I’ve noticed that NetShield still struggles to block certain ads effectively compared to these dedicated services, especially those annoying pop-up notifications that seem to slip through quite often.

I really hope the team can put more focus into improving NetShield’s filtering capabilities. It would be awesome to have a native solution that offers the same level of granular blocking as those specialized providers so I don't have to rely on additional browser-level configurations to get a clean browsing experience.

Keep up the great work!

Connectivity Issues

Am I the only one who has been experiencing connectivity issues with the VPN turned on for ios devices? Sometimes websites won’t load and games cannot connect to game servers. When I click on the Proton VPN app, I will get a black screen for 10-15secs before the app loads, only for everything to appear to be in working order. However I still do not have access to the internet unless I kill the vpn or switch to another one of Proton’s servers, only for the issue to reappear. Has anyone else had this happen and figured out a solution? I tried changing both the protocols and netshield but to little success.

Does ProtonVPN work when I use USB tethering from my Phone (mobile data) to Desktop (no internet)?

Basically just the title. I've got a Desktop with a new Linux install that has no wifi mainboard so I gotta wait til the the adapter I ordered arrives.

Right now I'm using my unlimited mobile data plan from my phone as internet. Basically I've connected my usb-a to usb-c cable to my phone and desktop, and switched it to usb tethering instead of charging on my phone.

So I have internet, but I like using VPN on certain games. If I activate ProtonVPN on my Desktop will it work properly? It seems like activating VPN only on my phone won't work, and activating it on both seems stupid. There's no hot-spot involved. Thanks for any answers.

Work VPN not working unless I do hotspot workaround

I've been using PVPN for a little over a year and overall good experience. My main issue is my work network. I have my laptop wired to the work network. It will not connect to the VPN if i initiate a connection while connected to the work network.

I have to tether to my phone's mobile network through wifi > connect to proton on my laptop > disconnect my phone network > reconnect to work network via ethernet and only then will the VPN work. I've tried several options like stealth mode and alternative routing with no luck.

Any ideas?

I'm pulling my hair out trying to get port forwarding to work with Gluetun+ProtonVPN+qBittorrent!!!

Hi everyone. I've been trying for days now to get port forwarding to work and I'm at a loss. I'm pretty new to this stuff so I'm fairly certain I'm missing something since I find lots of articles and posts saying how it's really easy and built in, but then I can't make it work.

I have Gluetun set up with my ProtonVPN account by putting in my OpenVPN credentials and I have verified that it's hiding my IP. I've set "VPN_PORT_FORWARDING=on",added "+pmp" to my username, and selected "PORT_FORWARD_ONLY=on". I've also set up the up and down commands from the Gluetun github:

VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_UP_COMMAND=/bin/sh -c 'wget -O- -nv --retry-connrefused --post-data "json={\"listen_port\":{{PORT}},\"current_network_interface\":\"{{VPN_INTERFACE}}\",\"random_port\":false,\"upnp\":false}" http://127.0.0.1:8080/api/v2/app/setPreferences' VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_DOWN_COMMAND=/bin/sh -c 'wget -O- -nv --retry-connrefused --post-data "json={\"listen_port\":0,\"current_network_interface\":\"lo\"}" http://127.0.0.1:8080/api/v2/app/setPreferences'

I changed the IP address there to the one for my actual server, which I assume is right, but it doesn't matter because when I check the Gluetun logs for which port is forwarded and I check that one on canyouseeme, it still says it's closed.

I've seen some things that give a docker-compose.yml and say "just run this and it'll work!" but I don't know what that is. When I googled, I saw that Unraid apparently doesn't support that natively anyway and a bunch of posts make it seem like I shouldn't need to anyway!!!

I hope this isn't too stupid a question where I'm missing something simple. I've been trying and trying to get this working, so I'm really hoping someone can help me out. Thanks!

iPhone Widget Misleading

The iPhone widget shows me as connected, but in actuality I’m not when I look at the actual app. Is this a bug?

Why does ProtonVpn show me 2.99€ first and when i log in 4.99€ for 24 months?

2.99€ for 24 months sounded like a great deal.
I would do 48 months if it existed but i can always renew a vpn subscription its not like hosting or anything existential where you have to be afraid that it will expire. Is the 4.99€ the real price right now?

Split tunneling completely broken on Mac

Activated it for Brave. Brave still consistently getting VPN'd. I did it correctly: Approved the kernel extensions, restarted the Mac, still no split tunneling.

Any way to make it work? I understand it's "experimental", but shouldn't it work at least sometimes? Very frustrating.

Also, how do I remove the extension (since it's not working anyway)?

P.S. paid plan, of course.
