what are your honest views on QMUL…should I apply.

Going into year 13 and I’m thinking about unis to apply to, one of them potentially being QMUL. I visited it earlier this year and uhm…..it was okay.

I don’t like the area that it’s in, the people there looked odd ish (I’m so sorry but this is true) and there’s a graveyard in the middle of the uni???

sounds spiritually fucked but the only reason I’m considering it is because it’s a RG uni and I want to go into law after my degree (though I’m doing a non law degree).

How are the people there? The teaching for humanities/sociology degrees? Is it actually that bad? Tell me everything, no sugarcoating, just honesty.

PSA against doing joint-honours LLB degrees

Hello all,

I am a recent graduate of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). I did the LLB Law & Politics (ML13) programme. I am here to warn against choosing this programme or law and business. This also applies at other UK universities.

  1. if you do the joint-degree, you will not be eligible for the NY Bar. If this is something you think may be of interest to you, you must do the 3 year straight law LLB. This may be cured with an LLM, but some states (like DC) require the straight LLB regardless of LLM.

  2. your grades in the joint-degree will be lower. You will take hard courses (Land, Tort, Equity) later and they will have a higher impact on your grade. I don't know anyone on the L&P programme that got a 1st, but knew plenty of straight law LLB people that did with similar core marks.

  3. You will not have many classes or electives with the friends you meet in your 1st year LLB courses.

  4. You will need to meet the same entry requirements (ie A*AA) for the joint programme, but about 1/3 of your classes will be with people who came on clearing or otherwise had lower entry requirements. The quality of teaching may not be as good depending on the school, but more importantly your classmates in your 'other' school will not enrich your learning in the same way.

If there's one thing I regret from my time at Queen Mary, it's not doing the straight LLB. This is just my 2 cents. I hope this helps someone!

Student Accommodation

Hey, guys. I want to study in QMUL and do foundation year (law pathway) there. However, I’d want to live in Central or West London. I checked and my lessons will be held 3-4 times per week. Is it an option to live in a student accommodation in a central/west London and travel to campus for lessons only? Do QMUL students do that? What are the pros and cons?

Is there a possibility for me to ask to switch to first year instead of foundation year?

Hey everyone,

I got in through clearing for enginnering with a foundation year. My mum's been pressuring me to ask them if I am able to go to straight to first year.

I was wondering if I emailed QMUL that I could switch to the first year or a different course, which has the contextual grade requirement as BBC, I originally wanted to do, though I am still open to this course.

My grades were BCC, though I don't really want to loose my spot I have now just in case, but I just needed a few more opinions from other people.

Much appreciated :) xxx

UCL International, Social & Political Studies (ISPS) or Queen Mary Law

Hello. I got AstarAA for my results and I’m quite pleased with this. I had an offer from Queen Mary of AAA for law but I’m not sure I want to go there. Mainly due to the reputation of the uni and the fact it is in East London. I was looking through clearing courses and found International, Social & Political Studies (ISPS) for AstarAA and applied through clearing and got a place. I’m now unsure where to accept UCL ISPS and want some advice. I think I want to be a lawyer when I’m older or go into something like diplomacy/international relations. (I’m more tending towards being a lawyer but that diplomacy idea is an option.) If I did the course at Queen Mary it would just be 3 years then my SQE or Bar course, whichever I decide to pursue. But if I go to UCL I will have to do 4 year degree + a conversion course for one year before I get to the stage of an SQE or Bar course. This puts me 2 years behind compared to if I did law at QM and I will also £20k more in debt. Thing is I prefer UCL and it was a dream when I was first applying and tbh I actually don’t mind the course ISPS it sounds interesting and unique. Ive also heard the law degree can be kind of dry so I do feel this isn’t a bad option. I’m leaning more towards UCL because of its reputation and prestige to employers compared to Queen Mary and I feel I will have more fun there. I also feel if I do go into law it would most likely be in international law/human rights law which ISPS can help direct me towards making me have more knowledge in this field (potentially). I’m just not sure about the ‘loss’ of 2 years and the extra debt but yet again is it really a ‘loss’ when I’m learning a good selection of things in those 2 years. Ive also heard the law degree can be kind of dry/boring. In ISPS I’ll have to take up a language which I actually don’t mind but it’s definetly like something that I wouldn’t have expected. I don’t mind this tho coz I get to study at that country in my 3rd year and feel this will be a good travel experience, something I like to do. I do feel at UCL I acc don’t mind telling people which uni I go to like when ppl asked me which uni am I going to I wouldn’t really want to say Queen Mary. Also, I think the atmosphere at Queen Mary will be more studious due to the nature of the uni and the ppl that go there. Adding onto that, the fact the clearing grades required for UCL ISPS were AstarAA whereas Queen Mary it was taking clearing grades of like BBC or something (I might be wrong about that tho).

This is in a really jumbled up order of me wanting to go to UCL and me not wanting to go so please like note the bits that you think matter the most in ur reply (ps. Thank you)

Is it an objectively ‘good’ choice of choosing UCL ISPS over Queen Mary Law based on my personal reasoning on where I would prefer and actual facts about prestige etc. Please help and thank you too. Any questions let me know. Thank you for reading.

Home fees clearing?

I just got into QMUL via clearing, and i was just wondering if I'd get home or international fees, cause I've been classified as a home student by all my unis, but my friend got in via clearing and he had to pay international fees. Does anyone know anything about this or know anyone I can talk to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
