Just picked up 1986 rx7 fc

Hi everyone I hope I am welcomed, I will definitely have lots of questions and ideas about this project.

Minimal rust, streetport 13b, 170k miles but seller says only 2k on new rebuild engine. Has a few nice mods bought for $7,000.

10 minutes after picking it up I ran out of luck. Is this why it’s a love hate relationship?

I Finally got my dream car and am very excited to start working on it!! Was able to drive it home but on the hill up to my garage I stalled and then couldn’t get it to turn on again. I know almost nothing mechanical about this car but have been informed from the seller about how the engine floods and stuff. So close to getting home but I end up killing my battery, then the starter. Now it only makes one click and I realized I was cooked.

I know I’m not the smartest for getting in to this but It was either now or never! For context I have some experience with motorcycles but nothing more than an oil change for cars. I’ve been saving up a little while and managed to get this off fb for $7000. Definitely will have a lot of challenges.

The interior is pretty empty there’s a lot of empty space and cables hanging everywhere. No ac or sound system but I’ll slowly get to it.

Really would appreciate some encouragement I’ve been pushing and trying to reach my garage with 2 other people but I’ve given up. We got half way up the hill but with the parking brakes engaged as well as I’m gear it won’t stay. The seller actually came by to help out he was very kind to me and tried his best. I don’t blame him as he has given me lots of information that would have taken me much longer to become aware of. Definitely the nicest person I’ve met and has such a great passion for rotaries.

Starting the car feels really sus and I can’t understand what to do to make it better. There’s a switch that I’m assuming primes fuel but it keeps disconnecting so sometimes it won’t start. It could have just been the stsrter to begin with so I will come back once I manage to find one.

What are some stories you guys have to share?

$850 S4 Revival

This is my 87' FC that I bought in 2022 from under a tree for $850. It was not good (as seen in the second-to-last pic). It had no compression, and looked (and still does really) rough. I tore the engine down but it was not rebuildable unfortunately, and so the car sat in my yard until 2024 when I found a S4 13B on facebook marketplace for a fair price.

At least it seemed fair up until I put it in the car and started it only to find out the rear rotor coolant seal was blown... typical, but at that point I was in deep enough that I decided I was willing to learn to rebuild the engine. Long story short and lots of watching Youtube it is now street ported, has a new exhaust, brakes, suspension, working AC (!), and it runs great! Everything works. I'm going to keep it 4-lug and NA and just enjoy it, because man it's a blast. I even happened to find a non-turbo LSD which I installed. This is my first RX7 and I am super impressed with it, it just drives so well that I am basically dailying it despite the gas mileage. I'd like to improve the paint/body, but I also like the well used look and so I'm not that motivated to spend the money right now.

Along the way I also designed a few random 3D printable bits that are all free to download, you can find them here: https://makerworld.com/en/@mdonald623/upload

High compression ratio

A dumb question asked purely out of curiosity: what’s the highest people push 9.7:1 rotors to on a turbo setup? I’m guessing something like 300s on 93 but I’m more curious about e85. Thank you

Cup holder situation 🤪

Hey guys. Just bought an FD RX7 RZ. I wanted to see how you guys are setting up cup holders, noticed it doesn’t have any from factory which isn’t a major issue since I used to use vent mounted holders on my R33 back in the day. But the vents are in awkward positions so I’m curious on how you guys are working around this issue.

Oil feed line leak recommendations

After a short drive yesterday I parked and saw a bit of smoke coming from under the hood. I found a small amount of oil had leaked out the feed line. It looks to be coming from under the fitting and not the actual AN line. My question is - should I put thread seal on this? And what's the correct torque spec? I'm having trouble finding definitive answers to either question. This is my first FD and I'd like to not burn it down if I can help it.

Is a clean non running rx7 GSL fb worth $2500

Been looking for a project to have fun with, this car hasn't ran since 98 but body is very good shape and its a GSL, looks way better in person that photos. The guy got it from the original owner last year but has too many projects which is why hes thinking of selling it. He's firm on $2500. I just got back from looking at it and here's what I found

Absolutely zero rest

Great paint (except the panel in front of hood and bumpers)

Motor is clogged/locked and already out

Hasn't ran since 98 due to locked motor

interior looks perfect

Underbody looks nice

Max Brake Rotor Size on Stock 17in wheels?

https://ceika-store.com/collections/custom-brake-kits/products/cbk841

I’m looking at purchasing a CEIKA front and rear BBK for my 1999 JDM FD RX-7 Type RS, and I’m hoping to get some feedback from anyone who has experience with this setup.

Proposed CEIKA Setup

Front
6 Large calipers
330 × 32 mm rotors
Rear
4 Small calipers
330 × 28 mm rotors

Questions
Has anyone run this exact CEIKA setup (or any 330 mm CEIKA kit) with the OEM Type RS 17-inch wheels?

Front: 17×8 +50
Rear: 17×8.5 +50

Did it clear without spacers? Any spoke or barrel clearance issues?

How is the brake bias compared to stock?
I’m trying to keep the car balanced for street driving and occasional track use. If anyone has experience with the CEIKA 6 Large / 4 Small piston configuration, I’d love to hear how the pedal feel and front/rear balance compare to the OEM Type RS brakes.

Factory Type RS Specs (from RX-7 forums)

Tires
Front: 235/45ZR17
Rear: 255/40ZR17
Wheels
Front: 17×8 +50
Rear: 17×8.5 +50
Brakes
Front: 314×32 mm rotor
Front caliper pistons: 33.9 mm (leading) / 38.1 mm (trailing)
Rear: 314×20 mm rotor
Rear caliper piston: 34.9 mm

Any firsthand experience, photos, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Who needs 12a parts?

If something catches your eye, feel free to dm me. Will cut a deal on anything as I don't need these parts.

All good if not, they'll go into storage.

Art of rx-7 fc3s for supporting my best friend

Hi! I want to show you my new art of Mazda rx-7 drawn in support of my friend who dreams of this wonderful car!

He recently got upset because he couldn't find mechanics in our country for rotor engine, saying "I'd rather buy another car than break my dream car.". I was upset that he was sad and wanted to support him. I drew him this art, and also offered a way out of his situation - a swap to an atmospheric engine. Yes, it's quite expensive and a lot of bureaucracy for our country and for someone, this seems like a "murder of the car's soul", but I think if it's the price of his car's happy life, then it's worth it. I know how he dreams of this car and to see him just abandon the dream because of problems with mechanics... I really didn't want that.

Hope you like the art!

( If anyone is interested in seeing the timelapse of this art, I can post it in the comments, but I'll tell you in advance that it starts with the line art stage because I'm shy about my attempts to find the right stroke/shape)

My experience ordering from rx-lights.com

Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone here is considering ordering from RX Lights.

I ordered a set of headlights in September 2024 and paid for them in full upfront. As of July 2026, I still haven't received them.

Over the last couple of years I've contacted them numerous times for updates. Since early 2025, the response has consistently been that the lights are "almost ready" or will be finished soon. Unfortunately, despite those repeated assurances, nothing has ever been delivered.

The delay itself is bad enough, but what has been most frustrating is the constant cycle of being told the order is nearly complete, only for months to pass with no meaningful progress. After almost two years, I've completely lost confidence that I'll ever receive what I paid for.

I'm not posting this to start an argument—I'm simply sharing my experience so that anyone researching RX Lights has another data point before deciding whether to place an order.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or have people been receiving orders recently?

I want to make my rx7 fc (s5) NA as loud as possible and fun as possible for the couple times a week im gonna drive it

My goal is to make it loud as those rx7’s in the 2 step videos on youtube since they all got the same engine. I live in texas so no need for restrictions. I first researched and found out about a Racing Beat header you need to place the o2 sensor in. And was just gonna straight pipe it all the way back and maybe add an exhaust tip.Any other tips or advice?

Opinions on my used parts?

These came from my old engine which made low compression. (~60-75 psi) I'm thinking these are trash, especially the housing, but idk... opinions would be appreciated. I can also easily catch my fingernail on both of these irons. My other housing and front iron were in pretty good shape so that's why they're not here.
