Who created self enquiry or where/when was it first seen in writing

What is the history of self enquiry? I found out about it through Ramana maharshi, and online in generally says he created it. I’m curious as to know if it was around way before him? Does anyone know how far it goes back, if at all?

Meditation frustration

I have tried all kinds of methods of meditation. Nothing seems to work for me. And it leaves me frustrated. The biggest obstacle is that I don't know if what I am doing is the right way or not.
What does 'observing your breath' mean? What does 'feel if there's any tension in your feet' mean? I want to know which part of the feet do you want me to feel for tension- the top, the mid or the bottom?- I get caught in these things and can never do how that 'observing', 'feeling', 'noticing' is to be done. Pranayama is still doable because you are breathing in and out in different patterns. But then, that is not meditation. That is preparation towards meditation.

What is meditation then? Can anyone really meditate? I highly doubt!

This is so frustrating. And I have been experiencing this up and down relationship with meditation for almost 2 years now.

Can anyone help?

I don't want advice on instructions on how to do or not to do. I need to learn from experiences if any. Because clearly, getting instructions (like those in guided meditations) do not work for me.

Sigh.

Anyone who knows about this please answer

Did Ramana Maharshi ever recommend reading any Puranas? Did he speak of Shiva purana ?
And I did hear about him talking of Tripura Rahasya, in many places but what about any other Puranas and scriptures he recommended or spoke about highly?

Maharshi's Gospel: Your Mind Is the Only Obstacle to Peace | Ramana Maharshi"

You've been meditating. Doing japa. Listening to bhajans. Reading
spiritual texts. And yet peace still feels just out of reach.

Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi's answer will stop you in your tracks:

"Peace is your natural state. It is the mind that obstructs it."

In this video, we break down one of the most profound conversations
from Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi — Chapter VIII: Peace and
Happiness — in a way that's clear, relatable, and deeply practical.

You'll understand:
→ Why vichara (Self-inquiry) feels like it isn't working — and what
you're actually missing
→ Where the bliss you feel in music, poetry, and prayer really comes
from (the answer will surprise you)→ What Maharshi means by
"diving consciously into the Self" — and how to actually do it
→ Why you keep misattributing happiness to external things — and how
to stop

This isn't philosophy for the sake of philosophy. This is a direct,
practical pointer to the peace that is already yours.
