Best CS2 cases to open right now - drop rates, EV math, and what I'd actually pick in 2026
Been going down the case-opening rabbit hole again. Putting together a proper writeup with drop probabilities, per-case stats, and the cases I'd actually pick depending on whether you want a knife, gloves, or profit.
Standard CS2 drop chances (applies to every case)
- Mil-Spec (blue): 79.92%
- Restricted (purple): 15.98%
- Classified (pink): 3.20%
- Covert (red): 0.64%
- ★ Rare Special Item: 0.26% → ~1 in 384 opens
Every "best case" discussion has to anchor on those numbers. What varies between cases is the value at each tier and what sits in the ★ pool (knife or gloves).
1. Kilowatt Case (knives — Kukri collection)
- Released Feb 2024, current Active Duty drop
- Covert: AK-47 Inheritance ($36–$140), AWP Chrome Cannon ($25–$91)
- ★ pool: 13 Kukri Knife finishes (Fade, Doppler, Marble Fade, Slaughter, etc.) — roughly $130–$2,000+
- Case price: ~$1.50–$2.00; key $2.50
- Why on the list: only way to drop the newest knife pattern. -EV like every case, but the pull you're chasing is unique.
2. Dreams & Nightmares Case (knives — Gamma collection, includes Butterfly)
- Community case, Jan 2022
- Covert: AK-47 Nightwish ($53–$114), MP9 Starlight Protector ($55–$94)
- ★ pool: 55 Gamma knives (Butterfly Lore/Doppler/Emerald, Talon Gamma, Karambit Gamma, etc.) — $200–$5,000+
- Case price: ~$3–$5 (no longer in active drop pool, supply finite)
- Why on the list: Butterfly Knife exposure + the only Covert pulls that hold residual value ≥ key+case cost.
3. Recoil Case (GLOVES — Sport / Slick / Slingshot)
- Released July 2022
- Covert: USP-S Printstream ($33–$111), AWP Chromatic Aberration ($28–$79)
- ★ pool: 24 gloves (Sport Gloves Hedge Maze/Slingshot/Pandora's Box, Specialist Marble Fade, Driver Snow Leopard, etc.) — $200–$4,000+
- Case price: ~$1.50–$2.50
- Why on the list: Printstream alone makes the Covert tier interesting. Sport Gloves Pandora's pulls are top-tier glove drops in CS2.
4. Snakebite Case (GLOVES — Broken Fang collection)
- Released May 2021
- Covert: USP-S The Traitor ($28–$153), M4A4 In Living Color ($27–$121)
- ★ pool: 24 Broken Fang gloves (Hand Wraps Slaughter, Sport Hedge Maze, etc.) — $150–$1,500
- Case price: ~$0.20–$0.40 (cheapest case in active rotation)
- Why on the list: lowest cost-per-open. If you're farming a glove pull on a budget, this is the math-friendliest case.
5. Revolution Case (GLOVES — same pool as Snakebite/Recoil tier)
- Released Feb 2023
- Covert: M4A4 Temukau ($27–$115; StatTrak up to $188), AK-47 Head Shot ($27–$103)
- ★ pool: 24 gloves (overlap with Recoil/Snakebite pool)
- Case price: ~$0.50–$1.00
- Why on the list: Temukau is one of the most popular M4A4 skins in CS2, so non-★ pulls have unusually strong floor demand.
EV math (Recoil example, prices fluctuate weekly)
- Mil-Spec ~$0.05 × 0.7992 = $0.04
- Restricted ~$0.30 × 0.1598 = $0.05
- Classified ~$1.50 × 0.032 = $0.05
- Covert ~$5 × 0.0064 = $0.03
- ★ Glove ~$400 avg × 0.0026 = $1.04 (huge variance: $200 base glove vs $4,000 Sport Pandora's)
→ EV per open ≈ $1.21. Key + case ≈ $4.00–$4.50. You're paying ~$3 per open for the dopamine. Every active case is -EV; there is no "+EV case", only variance.
TL;DR — what I'd actually do
- Want a knife → Kilowatt (newest pattern) or Dreams & Nightmares (Butterfly Gamma)
- Want gloves → Recoil (best ★ ceiling) or Revolution (cheaper entry)
- Want cheapest possible volume → Snakebite
- Want number go up → don't open, hold cases
