Check out my 1960's-era statue "upgrade"

I've had this little statue sitting on a shelf for a couple years (I took it out of an old Catholic wall altar, which I had converted into a Cthulhu Shrine instead). I've seen many variations on this Vampire theme with the Mary/Jesus statues and it's obvious why...it's a perfect fit!

I painted over the stigmata to "de-Jesus" the Christ figure and hopefully avoid blasphemy call outs by my Christian friends on Facebook (though most of my Christian pals are pretty cool). I was going to use a lot more blood...a LOT more...but decided to keep it more accurate since the vampire would have drank all of the blood.

If you would like to see the Cthulhu Altar where the statue originated from...check out that post here:

I didn’t know I was painting a goodbye.

I painted this during a time when I was simply thinking about wishes, lanterns, and a peaceful night. I had no idea that while I was painting it, I would receive the call that my father had passed away.

Looking back at it now, the lanterns feel different to me. They remind me of the end of a celebration, the end of a season, and sometimes the end of a life.

What started as a painting of wishes somehow became my goodbye painting.

I don’t think I will ever look at it the same way again. 🖤🏮
