Stock Market Recap for Wednesday, August 19, 2026

The major U.S. stock indexes ended broadly higher on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, snapping a two-day losing streak as the U.S. Treasury announced it would double its long-term bond buyback limit, providing an unexpected lifeline to a market being squeezed by multi-decade high yields. The FOMC minutes confirmed three Fed members voted for a rate hike at the July meeting, but markets chose to focus on the Treasury's intervention and a string of solid retail earnings.

The S&P 500 gained 0.21% (+16.22 pts) to 7,707.98. The Dow added 0.22% (+119.65 pts) to 53,463.05. The Nasdaq edged up 0.16% (+41.38 pts) to 26,331.09. The Russell 2000 outperformed, rising 0.48% (+14.40 pts) to 3,032.29.

The VIX dropped 6.12% to 14.87. Bitcoin surged 6.42% to $68,679.08, its biggest single-day gain in months. Gold soared 3.31% to $4,567.00. Crude Oil was essentially flat at $84.22/barrel.

Stock Market Recap for Tuesday, August 18, 2026

The major U.S. stock indexes ended broadly lower on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as a brutal chip sector selloff drove the Nasdaq to its worst session in two weeks and bond yields hit multi-decade highs across the globe, rattling a market already on edge from elevated oil prices and a stalled Iran peace process. It was the second straight day of losses, erasing most of last week's record-setting gains.

The S&P 500 dropped 0.69% (-53.30 pts) to 7,691.76. The Dow fell 0.22% (-116.38 pts) to 53,343.40. The Nasdaq slid 1.33% (-355.20 pts) to 26,289.71. The Russell 2000 dropped 1.28% (-39.11 pts) to 3,018.43.

The VIX rose 4.15% to 15.82. Bitcoin gained 0.39% to $64,594.76. Gold fell 1.67% to $4,399.10. Crude Oil was essentially flat at $84.07/barrel.

buying 1K BOXX using free gold margin loan

does anyone else do this or some variant of it?

I get 1K free margin loan so why not buy BOXX and collect some cash every month, which goes to pay for gold, or at least brings the cost of gold down so its just around $1/month instead of $5/month

Stock Market Recap for Monday, August 17, 2026

The major U.S. stock indexes ended broadly lower on Monday, August 17, 2026, as dimming hopes for an Iran peace deal sent oil toward $85 and 30-year Treasury yields hit their highest level since 2007, pulling stocks further from last week's record highs. Chip stocks were the lone bright spot in an otherwise defensive session dominated by energy and rate anxiety.

The S&P 500 fell 0.52% (-40.70 pts) to 7,745.06. The Dow dropped 0.51% (-272.63 pts) to 53,459.78. The Nasdaq slipped 0.32% (-84.25 pts) to 26,644.91. The Russell 2000 declined 0.35% (-10.88 pts) to 3,057.54.

The VIX jumped 6.60% to 15.19. Bitcoin gained 2.33% to $64,322.67. Gold rose 0.81% to $4,473.10. Crude Oil surged 3.09% to $84.95/barrel.

What’s everyone think of the new Robinhood Ventures II fund that went live today?

I think it’s cool to be able to get access to companies you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

When this account hits $5k, I’m going to Japan 🇯🇵

I made this account specifically for a future Japan trip. It’s currently at $1,813.58 and the goal is $5,000.

I used to buy a $7 boba basically every day. I decided to cut that down to once a week and put the difference into this account instead.

That works out to $42 every week going toward Japan.
It’s all in SCHG right now, so obviously the value will move with the market, but I’m going to keep putting in the $42 every week until the account hits $5k.

At $42/week with no investment gains, it should take me around 76 weeks (about 17–18 months).

Once I see $5,000, I’m booking Japan. 🇯🇵

Still get my weekly boba too 😂

Edit. I think living there and vacationing might be different. My plan is lots of travel, sightseeing. Temple. Deer. Souvenir. Real sushi? Wagyu. One piece. Casino. Sakura. Onsen. Sapporo.

The thread is locked so I post here for replies if possible.

5k already accounted for taxes. Don’t need that much. But do need at least around there. Also after hitting 5k I need 1-2 months to plan the trip and take time off. So ideally I’m already aiming for slightly more

Stock Market Recap for Friday, August 14, 2026

The major U.S. stock indexes ended mostly lower on Friday, August 14, 2026, pulling back from Thursday's record close as two back-to-back consumer data misses reminded Wall Street that the American consumer is buckling under the weight of oil-driven inflation. The S&P 500 held up relatively well, but the week closed with a clear warning sign flashing beneath the surface.

The S&P 500 slipped 0.17% (-13.23 pts) to 7,785.76. The Dow fell 0.20% (-107.58 pts) to 53,732.41. The Nasdaq dropped 0.28% (-73.86 pts) to 26,729.16. The Russell 2000 bucked the trend, gaining 0.55% (+16.81 pts) to 3,069.66.

The VIX dropped 3.08% to 14.18, its lowest level of 2026. Bitcoin eased 0.64% to $62,944.44. Gold added 0.19% to $4,428.90. Crude Oil rose 1.37% to $82.36/barrel.

Stock Market Recap for Thursday, August 13, 2026

The major U.S. stock indexes ended broadly higher on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with the S&P 500 topping 7,800 for the first time in history after a back-to-back inflation double-header — Tuesday's CPI and today's PPI — both came in cooler than expected, pushing rate hike odds sharply lower and sending tech to another record close. It was the clearest inflation signal in months that the war's energy-driven price shock may finally be peaking.

The S&P 500 gained 0.65% (+50.49 pts) to a new all-time record 7,798.99, crossing 7,800 intraday for the first time. The Dow added 0.13% (+69.72 pts) to 53,839.99. The Nasdaq climbed 0.81% (+214.54 pts) to 26,803.03. The Russell 2000 rose 0.23% (+7.06 pts) to 3,052.55.

The VIX was essentially flat at 14.66. Bitcoin slipped 0.28% to $63,356.95. Gold pulled back 1.40% to $4,404.90. Crude Oil eased 2.46% to $81.22/barrel.

tips in investing for an 18 y/o?

i invested 50 bucks into green energy and then some of the more typical stocks to balance stuff out. robinhood gave me 5 random dollars, so i invested that in NVIDIA. so far, i've made around $10 in barely a week, so i'm happy with that! however, i was wondering if anyone had any tips? ig one is going to be diversify more (but idk what i should buy) and the other is going to involve selling my green energy stocks.

edit: idk why there's a shitpost tag. this is legit lol.

The major U.S. stock indexes ended mostly lower on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as Wall Street pulled back from last week's record highs in a holding pattern session dominated by two forces pulling in opposite directions: hope for a U.S.-Iran deal bringing oil lower, then Iran hardening its demands and sending crude right back up. The S&P 500 slipped 0.06% (-4.53 pts) to 7,753.11. The Dow fell 0.11% (-60.95 pts) to 53,975.98. The Nasdaq dropped 0.32% (-85.26 pts) to 26,605.36. The Russell 2000 declined 0.56% (-17.10 pts) to 3,017.40.

Credit on covered call with 0 bid price?

Hi, I am new to Robinhood and options. Just found out about covered calls. Interestingly, it shows some premium credit even for an option with bid price of 0. Would I really get that premium although bid price is 0, because ask price is non-zero? What am I missing? Example screenshot enclosed.
