My energy bills are spiking! Anyone else struggling with these rising costs?

My energy bills have been up over the past couple of months... how do I pay for groceries?

Anyone else seeing their utilities and bills skyrocket in the area? What price jumps have stood out the most to you, and what are y'all doing to deal with it?

Housing is up 10%?, and I'm stressing out

More Flock?

Entered PIP north (exit 6) entrance from Orangeburg road. Noticed what appears to be a flock camera at the entrance. Noticed the same structure on the off-ramp (exit 6w) Are these to be permanent?

Tarrytown Commuters?

Hi guys. So this summer I took on a full time job at 18 years old in LIC. While I didn’t do as good as I could have saving money, I’m going to be commuting to Hunter shortly using Metro-North. I split time doing Tarrytown and North White Plains. While NWP is considerably cheaper, I’m spending about 40-50 minutes in my car after work, even when I’m on my way back at 3:30 or 4. Tarrytown was more expensive, but I’d only spend about 20-30 minutes rather than almost an hour after a long day and early mornings.

I’m wondering if any fellow commuters know how to maybe make this commute a little more cost effective. I currently have a NWP monthly pass so I’m going to let that run its course before making any changes. But 14 dollars for parking compared to the 7.25 at NWP adds up fast.

I’d also be interested if any commuters know how to improve the time it takes to and from and which station is better. I don’t take HudsonLink anymore since they merged up with Coach USA because service has gotten really spotty.

I’d appreciate your help and would be happy to give more details if necessary! Thank you!!

Sports Fandom In The Capital Region

I'm putting together a county-by-county map of sports allegiances across New York State (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other leagues as gauged by interest). To do so I am collecting self-reported data from New Yorkers. If you have the time and are a sports fan of any size, I would appreciate if you helped fill up my dataset. Right now I have a little over 100 responses, but a lot of them are from NYC and Long Island (where I'm from). I'm trying to get a much larger and diverse dataset to boost the overall quality of the project. All answers are anonymous. You'll have to be logged into an email for Google Forms to ensure more than one response is not submitted by the same person, but I can not see any of it.

If you're curious here's the link: https://forms.gle/ZcAaWBVEJNeHr2RUA

Any responses would be appreciated, Thanks!

Community resource: I built a free marketplace for Rockland businesses + shoppers

Hi! I built a shopping & business hub for Rockland county. It’s free and aims to make local shopping easy.

https://rockland.market/

Whether you’re looking for gluten-free Spider-Man cupcakes or custom wine glasses for a bride and groom, Rockland Market will let you find the right local person.

(Think: less Amazon, or Etsy without the 8-10 day ground shipping).

Formal explanation below 👇

Rockland Market is basically a one-stop local marketplace + community hub for Rockland County.

It’s trying to solve two main problems:
Finding and buying local is harder than it should be. Instead of searching Facebook groups, Instagram, Etsy, etc., Rockland Market puts local businesses, including tiny home-based businesses, in one searchable place with direct in-app messaging and community recommendations.

It’s hard to know what’s happening locally tonight. The “Tonight” feed lets restaurants and bars post live music, karaoke, specials, events, etc., so people can quickly see where to go without checking a dozen websites/social accounts.

The bigger mission: Make shopping, eating, and going out locally as convenient as the big platforms, so more money stays with Rockland businesses and families.

Totally free for shoppers and businesses. I’m finishing up the B2B and service-based feeds tonight. I would love to see some of you there!

Incompetent Clarkstown elected officials MISSED the deadline to submit the Community Preservation Act for a local referendum this November. So at least one more year without the new TAX.

Ramapo's Police Chief released a statement about surveillance technology. He didn't mention the drone contract, the AI platform, or where the money came from.

Six days ago Chief Hyman released a public statement about license plate reader technology. He talked about constitutional balance, community values, and knowing when to exercise restraint.

It sounds good. Here's what he didn't mention.

He didn't mention the $601,713 Skydio drone contract signed by Supervisor Specht with no public vote and no competitive bid.

He didn't mention Axon Fusus, the AI platform approved in February that pulls drone feeds, license plate data, and camera networks into one real time dashboard with facial recognition and automated alerts.

He didn't mention the DCJS grant that legally requires the department to share license plate reads, camera feeds, and drone data with the state Crime Analysis Center Network as a condition of receiving the money.

He didn't mention that 791 drone flights have been logged since March, 764 of them with no case file and no stated purpose.

He didn't mention where any of the money came from, when any of it was voted on, what the actual policy is, or what oversight exists.

A statement about surveillance technology that doesn't describe the surveillance technology isn't transparency. It's the appearance of transparency.

We are not asking whether to move forward. We are asking what the system is in the first place and whether it is appropriate to implement.

If there is anything positive from his statement that I would quote him on it would be this: "Technology should never be adopted simply because it is available. It must serve a legitimate public-safety purpose, reflect the expectations of our community, and be balanced against the constitutional protections we are sworn to uphold."

Even then, "balanced" seems like an...intentional choice of verbage, the constitution is upheld, or it is violated, there is no "balance".

If he cares about the constitution being upheld (not balanced) he'd advocate for a state level equivalent of the proposed: Protect Liberty and End Warrantless Surveillance Act (H.R. 7816). There is currently no balance, just what appears to be overreach in the legal claim of 3rd parties collecting the data. And this all refers to alprs, the drone program is much more concerning than stationary cameras.

More to come.

Look whose standing behind Rep. Miller

Mike Lawler standing behind a man A GOP Rep. who is accused of hurting his own toddler and pulling a gun on his wife.  Well Lawler said the Epstein investigation was (quote) " a lot of nonsense,” “There are a lot of issues ..right now. A dead pedophile ain’t one of them.”

Clarkstown administration has done nothing to get ahead of the DATA CENTERS!

Right now, Clarkstown's zoning code has nothing to say about data centers. No definition. No limit. Nothing.

That's not a small gap. The day a developer files for a windowless server farm — one that can pull as much electricity as a small city and millions of gallons of water for cooling — the town would be writing the rules with the applicant's lawyers already in the room. Say no then, and we're in court. Decide it now, and it's settled.

Nearly 12 gigawatts of data center load is already sitting in New York's grid queue, and towns across the state are fielding these proposals.

So I drafted the law myself: data centers and crypto mines prohibited in every zoning district — with the ordinary server rooms at your office or school expressly protected.

Your power bill. Your water. Your quiet street. Decided before someone else decides for you.

Is life better for you this year?

(1) In 2025 families are paying here an average of $310 more on groceries above previous year.  Ground beef for example increased by roughly $71 annually  - USAD

(2) 64% of people who have lost food assistance are young people just entering the workforce.  Food insecurity is at COVID levels now.

(3) Utility bills in New York have risen by 46.75%

Clean energy that GOP has just cut funding in New York would have reduced that.

(4) Credit card debt hit just shy of the historic all-time high

(5) Families wages are falling behind inflation (but high-earners have seen gains)

(6) Family premiums for employer health insurance is near $27,000 says KFF.....the sectors that spend the most (prior available data) on Mike Lawler are financial institutions, Health, Energy, a lot of single issue ideological contributors.  Many of these very institutions are benefiting directly from rising costs.

Flock cameras spotted in Chestnut Ridge/spring valley

So far in the last couple weeks I noticed 3 of them pop up randomly. One is at the traffic light by Costco by the train tracks, thru way entrance by south pascak and then right on the lawn at the light by cool pool spa.

What’s goin on ? Anyone else noticing them ???
