Dynamic Lighting Walls Jumping

Hi all, logged in for my campaign tonight and discovered that all of the dynamic lighting walls I've drawn out for every map in my campaign have jumped to the upper left hand corner of the map. I've tried moving them back, but as soon as I reload the map, they all jump again. It's real weird. Anybody have any ideas on what this is/how to fix it?

[Official] Try the New Align to Grid Beta!

Today is a GREAT DAY! Our new Align to Grid beta is live and free for every GM, no subscription needed.

The new guided tool walks you through three easy steps to align your map and works on those previously impossible to align due to baked-in borders, offset grids, and uneven spacing. Plus, it supports every grid type on Roll20: square, vertical and horizontal hex, isometric, and dimetric.

Along with the new tool, we’ve designed a convenient hotbar on the Map Layer of your pages that lets you quickly upload backgrounds, launch Align to Grid, and adjust and customize other page settings without digging through other menus.

https://preview.redd.it/sjnaccp3zckh1.png?width=852&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb2932443913d00131614762c1481327181161f4

To align a map:

  1. Anchor: align the crosshair with a grid intersection on the map
  2. Scale: resize the 3x3 sample grid to match the size of the grid on your map
  3. Fine Tune: drag from any grid intersection or line to adjust your image to account for any drift or odd-sizing

You can watch a full demo video on our blog, plus learn more about new backdrop upload functionality and how Scale to Grid (found in the right-click context menu) can help with aligning Map Tiles and tokens.

Note: the old tool isn't gone (yet), so if you’re a glutton for punishment, you can still use the Legacy process anytime before it’s replaced when beta ends.

Let us know what you think, or any questions you have!

freaking out, maps broken?

Today I accidentally held the middle mouse button and clicked and it destroyed the window I was working on, worse all my maps look like this. I rollback and nothing changes, is this lagging or am I fucked?

Token HP Bug

Another bug: When I subtract hit points from my character (whether reducing the HP of the token or the character sheet), the token automatically resets to 30 HP, re-setting up the token doesn't help at all and it's incredibly annoying new bugs keep popping up every time!

Crits and Fumbles

# Crits & Fumbles for Non-Attack Rolls-

Yesterday I saw the post going over the improvements, and I saw that there was a change made to natural twenty and natural ones on ability checks and how you can make them turn green and red. I'm struggling to find out where that's located.

Is this available yet? If so can you point me to where it is located?

New D&D Features Coming Soon!

Hey'all! Dean from Roll20 here. Today I'm showing off features that are about to launch on the new D&D Fifth Edition sheet, as well as covering some updates you might have missed!

Coming Soon

⚡ Performance Upgrades

Performance is our #1 priority, and where we are dedicating most of our resources. Your game nights need to simply work before anything else. We’ve been hard at work giving the new D&D sheet a major performance update. We’re about to launch improvements to initial load times, sheet interactions, and dice rolls. You can read more about our ongoing performance work here.

🔀 New Shop Sheet Feature – Transfer Items to Players!

The D&D Shop Sheet lets you quickly generate shops and treasure chests filled with inventory. It’s still in early access, but is about to get its biggest update yet: sheet-to-sheet item transfers! Buy something in the Shop and it lands straight on your character sheet! Pro and Elite subscribers will get access to this a little later this summer. Stay tuned!

https://preview.redd.it/6y9iltxyb5kh1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee2c20ab75e723f78dfb92464025231e10f55eb3

💡Light Mode

We’re in the final testing phases of Light Mode, and we expect it to launch in the next few weeks! We’ll still support the Stylus light mode extension for those who prefer that (see setup video here), but now you’ll also have an immediate built-in option at your fingertips.

https://preview.redd.it/jxnpeeuzb5kh1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cd3e77d9d92bcfce77a8ab6feddc3002c0fe582

🖨️ Print to PDF Is Out of Beta!

After weeks of feedback and updates, we’re officially at 1.0! Build your character in Roll20, print it, and bring it to the table!

What You May Have Missed

A lot of small-but-mighty updates have recently hit the new D&D Fifth Edition sheet and builder. Here’s a roundup of what you might have missed, but will absolutely improve your game once you know it’s there.

🧪 Homebrew Updates

We already have a ton of homebrew features! From custom classes, subclasses, species and backgrounds, to unique conditions and resources, and more. We recently launched small but meaningful updates that further expand your options:

  • More attributes are accessible to Macros & Mod Scripts, including Ability Score Totals, AC, XP, Speeds, and Max HP. We’ll be adding more soon.
  • The Modifier Builder can now add roll bonuses to skill rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
  • Add notes in the Modifier Builder that show up in the Rest popup, handy for tracking recovery features or reminders
  • Action rolls can now prompt Query Mode, giving you more flexibility for rolls that need a quick input before firing
  • A limited modifier builder is now available on Actions, so you can attach or link resources directly to them

⚔️ Further Customize Weapons & Attacks

You could already modify your actions, but we’ve launched a handful of targeted improvements to take it further.

  • You can now add multiple attacks directly to a weapon from the Inventory tab
  • When editing an item with attacks, there’s now a handy Duplicate button so you can copy an attack and tweak it rather than rebuilding from scratch
  • Weapon Masteries now support smarter defaults: type All to apply a mastery to every weapon attack, a specific weapon name to target all attacks from that weapon, or a specific attack name to target just that one

⚙️ Campaign Settings Sheet

https://preview.redd.it/mm24err3e5kh1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=22be03a74287fc33443dd0b020d8ca33170ba2bb

There’s a new D&D sheet type in the VTT: a Campaign Settings dashboard. This controls the settings for ALL of the D&D sheets in your game. Most importantly, it includes a long-requested feature, default settings that apply automatically to every new sheet. You no longer have to manually reconfigure every sheet one by one.

🛡️ NPC Sheet Polish

https://preview.redd.it/cxro2nw2e5kh1.png?width=1436&format=png&auto=webp&s=4bb26431abe0f2f3887b010b31cc393f4a6a675b

DMs, these ones are for you! NPC stat block view has been updated for better readability across several sections. A whisper setting for NPCs has also been added in the Campaign Settings panel.

💥 Crits & Fumbles for Non-Attack Rolls

https://preview.redd.it/saf9pb15e5kh1.png?width=1226&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f639860ed93e7db2d5bb0873b88e7c52f0b6cf4

A small but fun one: you can now turn on visual crit and fumble indicators for non-attack dice results (skill checks, saving throws, etc.). Head to Sheet Settings to enable it. It won’t change any mechanics, but it does make that nat 20 Persuasion roll feel a little more special.

📱 A better Mobile Experience

The sheet & builder is now fully responsive for tablet and mobile web. Build and reference your character sheet from anywhere. Try it out in Roll20 Characters now!

🦴 Pull Characters Out of the VTT

Roll20 Characters is where you can manage your character sheets outside the VTT, both on mobile and desktop. It’s now really easy to get your VTT characters here!

Open Roll20 Characters and hit Fetch. Your character imports straight from your Roll20 game. From there, manage it on web, phone, or tablet, and every change syncs back to the VTT instantly. Rolls go straight into your VTT game too, whether you’re sitting at the table or not. If you don’t want the sync, choose Copy Character instead for a standalone copy that stays disconnected from any game.

Statblocks not loading in

Edit for clarity: I'm a pro user working with 2024 D&D and using the new sheets

Having an issue where I add a new statblock to my game, and it comes in blank. It seems like it's only affecting new statblocks, as older statblocks that are already in the game aren't having any issues. It looks like the stats themselves still populate as tokens still have hp and ac, but when I open the sheet, it's blank. Tried using different browsers, deleting then repopulating the statblock, closing and reopening the browsers, still nothing.
For reference, Bulezau is the new statblock, Peacock statue is an old statblock that still works.

how to auto trigger sound?

RESOLVED: DM-JK recommended 'Foreground Reactions' on a token to call the 'Simple Sound' mod to play audio . It did exactly what I was looking for.

Looking for a recommendation on automatic triggering of sounds. Say if the player approaches a door with skeletons on the other side, it would auto trigger skeleton sounds. Or a corridor with dripping sounds.
I know I can play sounds manually, but I keep forgetting.

Performance Updates – Aug 17, 2026

Hey all! Last week we shared an update on the performance issues we were managing across our services. Since then, we have deployed multiple updates that resolve a large portion of them. We are seeing clear improvement, with more on the way to bring everything back into normal territory. And we’re still pushing out updates to make your play even better.

Here is a peek behind the curtain at what shipped since our last post.

Where things stand

I’ve been personally working with many players and GMs who have reported problems, as well as watching our Help Center and public channels. I’m happy to share that nearly all of the reported sluggishness has been resolved.

There are detailed descriptions of our work in the previous posts, and plenty more happened behind the scenes. While most of the solutions were focused on D&D sheets, there were also fixes to the data itself, the way that sheets use that data, and to the service that provides the data regardless of game system.

While all these updates have been found, diagnosed, and fixed by multiple people on three distinct teams, others have been working on improving performance. Next week, we’ll get to hear from them.

Releases since last week

Once the service was stable, we could dig into the specific trouble spots as they were reported in individual games. That let us isolate the combinations of options where performance fell off.

  • Problem: Rolls are slow from click to Chat – We found some character builds carry significantly more data than other, nearly identical builds. Processing all of that data made a roll take so long to resolve. We’ve revamped the way the sheet was sending that data, and that has resolved the delay between sending a roll and seeing the results appear in Chat.
  • Problem: Opening a sheet took a long time – We launched a fully systemic fix for calculation delays on Token bars.

D&D sheet performance, Phase 1

Phase 1 of the rollout we outlined in our earlier post is done. As of Tuesday morning, 100% of games are running these updates.

This work reduces the amount of data transferred between the sheet and our services. On its own it is not something most of you will notice at the table, but it is the groundwork Phase 2 requires. We released it incrementally so we could watch the effect of each step closely, and we saw the improvements we expected. Reports from players and GMs lined up with the rollout schedule, which tells us the fix is doing its job.

What is coming next

  • Phase 2 of the D&D sheet performance updates, planned to release in the coming weeks. This is where we expect the most optimizations you will actually feel while playing.
  • A new Compendium Service, further out on the roadmap, which will speed up the multiple services connected for game system data.
  • A data cleanup process to clear unused data stored on individual sheets, plus later work to process rolls without sending the extra data at all.

Some of these issues were very visible from the “30,000 foot” view. However, the individuals who have helped by sharing their own experience and unique character builds have shed light on issues that would only be apparent from the “on the ground” view. I’m sure there are more improvements we can make, and so if your game night is still being disrupted, please open a support ticket so we can make sure we resolve those too. To speed things along, include:

  • A link to the game
  • Any specific pages where you are seeing issues
  • Any sheets or tokens that are lagging Everything above covers the Character Sheet and Compendium systems. The team behind the Virtual Tabletop will be sharing another big chunk of work on VTT systems soon.

Thanks for all the feedback, the patience, and the help hunting these down.

Tokens flickering and becoming invisible upon zooming in and out...

Hello. Starting around two days ago and only affecting stuff I have uploaded or imported since (previous stuff seems unaffected) tokens of large and bigger size (medium are unaffected) start flickering and go invisible when I zoom in and out on the map. When I change layer, everything reappears until I zoom again.

I tried on both Firefox and Chrome, I tried on 3 different PCs, I even tried on mobile, I tried clearing my cache and disabling all extensions. None of this works.

I tried disabling hardware acceleration and it seems to fix it, except it slows the game to a slideshow. I also tried turning ON performance enhancement under graphical options and it seems to fix it, but for some reason having this option on also slows the game considerably (not as much as disabling hardware acceleration, this feels more extremely sluggish and slow, HA OFF just turned into a slideshow).

Adding a gif to show the issue.

I'd like to thank Roll20 Staff for listening

Typically, I am pretty vocal about what I like/dislike. The last few months, I have complained A LOT about being forced to upgrade to jumpgate.

When I went to copy an instance today, I saw Roll20 has provided an option to create a legacy game.

So, I feel compelled to post a 'thank you' since my complaint has been noticed, and resolved.

I had started researching what platform I might switch to; now I do not need to.

Roll20's Quantum Dice are Now Available Everywhere

Hey all! Dean from Roll20 here. I have a fun new addition to announce!

If you're a fan of Roll20's Quantum Dice engine, we've just launched the ROLL20 DICE ROLLER, so you can now take those dice everywhere!

Head over to d20roller.com to find your dice roller on desktop and mobile. It utilizes the same Roll20 dice engine you've trusted the past 10 years, has all the advanced roll mechanics you rely on, includes customizable one-tap buttons, and offers a mega-dose of Big Dicey Energy (formerly an internal Roll20 mascot who deserved more love!)

📷 if you prefer a video overview, here's that too

Here's a Deeper Dive for those interested 😄

Verifiable Randomness

The most common complaint about digital (and sometimes physical) dice is that they "feel rigged." We address this with receipts. Every roll goes through our QuantumRoll dice engine, and generates public seeds. We publish millions of results so you can check the math yourself.

Advanced Syntax Support

https://preview.redd.it/34b6uakhj5jh1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=02df71fcaf5a6de0ae4a026768fc8369f1b4a780

We provide some built-in presets for DnD 5e, Pathfinder, and other systems, but you can also write your own custom formulas, as complex as you want. Some examples:

  • 2d20kh1
    • Advantage! Roll 2 d20’s, and Keep Highest (kh) 1 roll.
    • Want to turn into into disadvantage? Swap kh1 for kl1 to Keep Lowest 1!
  • (1d8+4)*2
    • Critical damage multiplier. This rolls 1 d8, adds 4 to the result, then multiples that total by 2.
  • 3d6>2
    • Tally successes. Rolls 3 d6’s. It then provides you a count of every dice that resulted in 2 or greater (a tally of successes, not a sum of dice results)
  • 8d20ro1
    • Reroll! Roll 8 d20’s. Any 1 gets Rerolled Once (ro), and that new result sticks even if it’s another 1.
    • You can swap ro1 for r1 if you want it to keep rerolling until it’s not a 1!
  • 10d10!
    • Exploding dice! Roll 10 d10s. Every time the result is 10, the dice will explode and roll an extra dice.
  • {10d10!>7}>8
    • Exploding Dice, with extra features! Roll 10 d10’s. Any dice that’s 7 or greater will “explode”, meaning a bonus d10 will be rolled.
    • Then it counts up every resulting die that’s 8 or higher and gives you that count as your total.

Find more examples in our Help Center.

Sign In for All Features

Signing in to your free Roll20 account unlocks two things: Quick Rolls (add, edit, reorder, and import game specific presets) and the D20 Roll Report, a shareable recap of your session's d20 roll results. No subscription is needed for any feature, everything can be accessed on a free account!

Let me know if you have any questions, requests, or feedback! Thanks!!

Issue with token sizes reverting to 1x1 when dragged from a folder in the Art Library.

I'm trying to set up some uploaded decorative assets in the Art Library with organised folders to be easily dragged onto the map. Unfortunately, I've found that unless the assets are dragged from outside of folders in a long unorganised list, none of them are saving the default size I have set for each token when I start a new session. All of them revert to 1x1 unless dragged from a source outside of a folder.

I've googled for answers and found a handful of posts reporting the same issue, but the most recent I found was from 3 years ago with no fixes listed.

Just wondering if this has been fixed and there's a setting I'm missing, if it remains a bug, or if there's a workaround I could use. I'm aware that tokens from the journal that are tied to characters work fine and I've got some like that for player tokens, but its not the most practical solution to do the same for 100+ map decorations.

Update: This has been clarified to me as a current limitation of how the folders system works in the Art Library. I'm hoping that this changes in a future update to make folders and organising default asset sizes easier, but I'll use the Journal workaround in the meantime. Thank you to all the comments for helping.

I built a program that can build DnD5e Roll20 Macros in seconds from PDF or Text, plus so much more. No API

Hello! I'm going to try to post this again. My original post from Wednesday contained copyright material so I have adjusted my GIF so it more closely aligns with the community standards.

I built a Dungeons and Dragons companion program this is able to turn raw text stat block of creatures copy and pasted into a program that outputs the specialized Roll20 Macro Cards.

It also is compatible with DnD Beyond PDF character Sheets as it has a PDF importer. I have tried it with my own homebrew character sheets built from Google Slides and Print to PDF and it catches about 90% of the information so it's not perfect.

I call this program the Lawn Gnome Gaming DM Hub and it's so much more than a macro exporter, it's built as a full blown Dungeon Master's Combat Companion. In my opinion, this is the most advanced Dungeons and Dragons Initiative Tracker that can be found.

The DM Hub can:

  • Export fully functional Roll20 Macros to your clipboard (No API!)
  • Track Initiative
  • Encounter Building for Session Preparation
  • Track Status Effects
  • Track Most Spell Effects
  • Track Spellcasting Charges for Monsters
  • Track Spell Slots for Player Characters
  • Detect Legendary Creatures, Regional Effect, Lair Actions, and Madness Effects of Demon Lords

I built this as an all around companion for my own games and I would like to share this powerful tool with the community. We are currently accepting beta-testers for this program!

Adjusting Critical Range

Am I correct in believing there is no way to adjust the critical range of a weapons attack? Wants to lower it to 19-20, but the new 5.5e sheet doesn’t seem to have that feature. I swore I could’ve done it before on the old sheets.

It’s a modified weapon, longbow, that is lowering the critical range range. Not a skill.

Why is Dungeon of the Mad Mage done so POORLY?

I purchased Dungeon of the Mad Mage nearly a year ago to run for a group of friends. I decided to make this purchase because the "free" version, the one that only has the one level, is such an excellent tutorial for how to do lighting in Roll20.

But the paid version is flat-out inferior. What the heck happened? Not only is the first floor not the same rigging as the free version, it's worse. Doorways don't have position-accurate doors, they often have both a poorly-placed door AND A WALL. So even opening the door doesn't allow the players to see through the doorway.

Even worse, the second floor (now that I'm reaching it) doesn't have doorways at all - anywhere there's supposed to be a door (normal, one-way, or secret), there's just a crudely done wall connecting the two actual walls. And the wall placement is slapdash, like someone did it in five minutes without really trying to make it consistent.

What the heck is going on here?

(Here's a screenshot of what I see at the Lighting level of Floor 2)

How well does the 2024 DND character sheet enforce limits?

I've got a player running a 2024 Cleric using the 2024 character sheet.

I'm trying to determine whether the character sheet enforces limits like on the number of spells that can be prepared at any one time, and the number of controls available? To be clear this is not a trust issue. The player is 100% intending to keep to RAW. The problem is that there are thousands of combinations available when one takes into account classes, subclasses, feats, origins, proficiencies, backgrounds, species, so "getting it right" is no trivial task for the player nor for the GM.

The sheet seems to track spell slots, which is very helpful.

The sheet seems to have a "soft" enforcement of how many spells can be prepared. The player can mark more than their limit (in this case, seven, since they are a fourth level cleric) as "prepared" but the sheet notes something like "8/7" spells are prepared. So it sort of flags the excess at least.

For cantrips, maybe I am misreading how many cantrips a 4th level cleric can have in 2024 in the 2024 character sheet, but it allows this player to have eight cantrips. By my in expert accounting they should only have six, maybe 7 given the specifics of their character choices. But not eight. But maybe there are character options that have allowed them to have more?

  • 4th level Cleric, War Domain subclass, Hafling
  • Divine Order Thaumaturge
  • Initially Selected: Thaumaturgy, Resistance, Mending
  • Level 4 Feat: Magic Initiate (so that's two more cantrips)
  • Additional 4th level Cantrip Selected: Light

At this point, seeing the soft limits and built in tracking of spec slots and or "charges" available for particular things, I am INCLINED to trust the sheet is doing things right, and that in the case of something like the list of cantrips, it is me who is in error.

Am I giving the sheet too much authority/benefit of the doubt?

(edit: clarity)

[Official] 🪄Designer Diary: Improved Align to Grid Tool

Hey everyone. Back in July, we announced that Align to Grid was getting rebuilt. Today our design team shared a blog reflecting on why this work was necessary, and previewed some of the functionality and design you can expect when the beta launches (in the next week or two).

The highlights:

  • A new, guided 3-step process will be easier to find and use
  • Works for square, isometric, dimetric, and hex grids
  • Works on pages that already have tokens, Dynamic Lighting, and Map Pins
  • A new Map Layer hotbar puts page-related settings in one place for easy access
  • It's free for everyone, no subscription required

The full blog is here. We'll be back next week when the beta actually goes live, and we'll want your feedback on it so we can make sure it’s the best tool it can be for you before officially launching.

Also, worth mentioning (even though it’s a separate team): our Compendium service and D&D 5E sheets got stability improvements last week, and another related update will be shared in this sub later this week. Keep your eyes peeled if you’re following!
