Sluggish 2003 ruckus, only upgrade by previous owner was a cdi box.
Just bought a used 2003 ruckus with 1500 miles. It has an upgraded cdi but that is it. Its really sluggish and has a topend of 32 on flat ground.

Just put a fresh GY6 in. When I think I’m finished I’m not. But finally got her riding right
Beautiful day today...85 degrees & sunny! Here's my 2013 Ruckus. My build took about four years. But I am glad that the Ruckus is running. Riding around today brought so much joy in my life. I truly needed this. 🥰 I think my future plans are to get rear disk brakes and to find a way to mount my Trail Tech speed sensor. There's not much room between the fork and the front rotor.
I've sent my flywheel to JCRacing to have it lightened, when I removed it I'm not sure if my brand new flywheel puller came with a washer stuck to the end of it because after removing the 17mm nut that holds it, I pulled the flywheel out and when I removed the flywheel puller, a washer appeared, but it was stuck to the flywheel puller, not the flywheel, is that washer from the flywheel puller or from the stock flywheel from honda, it's a black washer and fits over the driveshaft, but it looks brand new with only one ring of wear that I'm guessing that it was created by removal. Anybody ever remove the flywheel on a stock GET 49.4cc engine? Is the flywheel only held by a nut or does it need a washer? Will their be any space for threads left at the end of the driveshaft for the washer? Is their suppose to be a washer on the flywheel when I reinstall it?
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to have a cupholder, it’s a bit over engineered but it’s been a life saver in this heat
So, long story almost short, we pulled our Ruckus's out of storage, cleaned carb, oil changed and it didn't feel right at top speed, kind of bucking feeling. I do some research, realize I probably needed to redo my CVT belt, so I get a new one (Gates PL30509 785x17.9x30), new OEM clutch springs including torsion. I also grabbed some 6g rollers. I get everything installed, belt not picnhed, torqued down properly. Feels ok with CVT cover off., put the CVT cover back on and it feels worse than it did before the change. Feels like there is no power and it kind of bucks or hicups.. hard to describe, but just doesn't feel like power is getting to the wheel.
Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong? As far as In know rollers didn't come out of position, the belt is within tolerances, the springs were genuine Honda. I redid the whole thing a while ago and it is still the same.
I’ve been having an issue for the past week or so and I don’t really know what to do. I’ll be driving down the road going around 30 mph. Every 2-5 seconds the scooter noticeably slows itself. It feels like it’s being pulled back. It’s the strangest thing. Has anyone had any similar issues? I’m convinced that a certain spot in the road “fixes” whatever issue this is because every time I drive down it the same 50-150 feet it’s opens all the way up and quits bogging….for like ten seconds. Then I pass this spot and it starts pulling again.
Finally picked a set of led headlights for my 2016. I had previously swapped out my stock turn signals for some really small bullets and was always a little uncomfortable with how potentially invisible my front signals might be during the day.
Found these lights that have an amber center X option which can be used as a signal and seemed the perfect solution, but they don't fit the ruckus mounts. I figured I would just sort it out when they arrived.
The lights have some threaded holes on the back to secure them into whatever mount they are designed for and I was able to utilize those. I have a diode laser cutter so I made some brackets from black acrylic and paired those with some small L-braces and fender washers I had lying around the garage.
All in all I'm pretty happy with them and definitely pleased with not having to spend on, or wait for, a custom bracket that may not have allowed me to set the lights back as far as the originals. They were also pretty inexpensive. I found them on Amazon for like $35 each.
In case anyone is wondering. I didn't need to add anything extra here to get the blinkers working. I simply spliced the wire for the central X light onto the blinker light for my previous signals. No separate relay needed.
Now, I did also delete my rear light assembly when I changed the front ones, and I replaced it with an LED strip that's mounted on my rear frame horizontally. It has signals built in and those required their own relays, so I added those at that time.
So I think if you have working blinkers already you shouldn't need to do anything special to get something like this working. I could be totally wrong and please feel free to correct if I am.
Just curious what you guys think I should list it for IF I sell my sweet little Camo with hardly any miles (near Atlanta)..? I told my mechanic I may list it for 1900& he offered me 1500 on the spot.
Runs great, starts great when my new battery is charged. 🙄(I only ride it 1-2x a month). New seat. New rear lights. Battery. Carb clean. Tires old but ok tread. Ideas?
I just bought a 2012 that’s been sitting a long time. Overhaul, or replace the carb? I’m comfortable with the overhaul but I know that sometimes it’s more practical to replace. What’s the case with a Ruckus?
Have a Honda ruckus with a polini variator, 5.25 Dr.Pulley sliders, 5k clutch springs, and a blue contra spring.
When I have new sliders I can hit 42 mph or so, but after about 1.5k miles the sliders develop flat spots at the corners and then I can only hit around 36 mph.
Does anyone else have this issue? Do I need to go back to rollers? I thought sliders would last longer.
So, I bought this 3 months ago, 2023 ruckus, and it had some problems, and I found this group as I was googling answers, and found them on a post in here. I just wanna say, you guys seem awesome and helpful. May your scooters run forever, and may your modifications always go right!
The long (sorry) story so far. Pulled my 2016 ruckus out of the shed to get it running for the season and it wouldn't start. Seemed like the spark plug and low gas was the issue. Replaced the plug/fueled up and it started right up.
Rode it off and on for a week or so with no issues. Then one morning I start it up and it revs up like crazy right out of the gate. Peaking over 5k. Given a couple minutes to warm up it evens out but is idling a little high. I adjust the idle screw and run some errands on the ruckus. No problems.
Next morning, same thing. Then it's idling too low so I have to adjust back up a bit. I research the problem and check the usual stuff. I look for vacuum leaks I make sure no hoses have come loose, etc. I find nothing obviously wrong.
I suspect the bystarter could have gone bad, and I've been meaning to clean the carb. So I pull the carb and clean it. I notice some corrosion, it's not really much but the bike is 10 years old so I figure all this is my cue to replace the carb entirely.
Bought a full OEM carb assembly from Partzilla and installed it. This includes the bystarter, so everything is new. Except for the jets. The jets on my old carb were spotless and unclogged, they were mods from stock because when I did an airbox delete like 5 years ago it came with replacement jets to help tune things for the new intake.
So now when I start the bike cold it revs up too high like before, but not as intense and immediate. It kind of climbs in stages. Revs hard and eases up, it repeats this until it fully warms up and then it drops into a relatively normal idle.
While it's doing this revving up and down cycle it runs rough. I tried recording it but I can't capture the sound it's making, the engine noise is cancelling it out.
TLDR: It's making a kind of dull quiet coughing sound. It reminds me of what it sounds like if you put the palm of your hand over the hose on a vacuum and then pull it back off. A dull puff of air sound followed by the rev down. Then it revs high, coughs and drops again.
I don't want to end up replacing every single thing one by one and not fix the problem. Does this behavior sound like anything obvious other than what I've already checked or replaced?
Sadly, my ruckus was stolen two years after I bought it and was gone for 3 years. The police recovered it when it was sold on Craigslist and the poor young naive kid who bought it without a title tried to register it. The asshole who stole it abused the shit out of it and I have no idea what he may have done to it. So I can't properly speak to its full history and what might have been messed with. That said, when I got the bike back I cleaned and repaired everything I could and it was all running fine for the last 5 years since. Now, all of a sudden, weird revving and idling issues for no obvious reason.
Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets genuinely bummed out when my ruckus is sick. I can't get the problem off my brain.
Thanks!
I got a brand new spark plug boot and CDI ignition coil and spark plugs and it still doesn’t have any spark any tips could it possibly be wiring? I really wanna get this thing fixed before the fourth.
Hello,
Here’s my 2013 Ruckus. Started this build in 2022. Then my life took a sad 😔 turn and had to put it off. 2026 - has been ok & had enough emotional/mental calories to start the build again.
Got it for free, needs air shot to the tires, Kickstart needs fixed, and needs carb kit, it DID RUN about 2 weeks ago before I ripped into the carb and found out the needle is shot, and its 150cc.
Hello, currently looking to buy my first ruckus. Just wanted to see what everyone thought of this? Also is it a terrible idea to buy without a title?
