Marathoning all Square Enix 1st Party RPGs. Do I play the Originals, the Remakes, or treat them as separate entries?

I'm on a bit of a long-term casual mission to experience the entire Square Enix RPG Catalogue. Been a life long Square Enix fanboy and wanted to see all that was on offer. I'm already over halfway through the first SaGa in the Collection version.

Entire question's in the title: Is there definitive editions to the older games, or should I treat the remakes as entirely new entries?

Edit: I should have mentioned I'm specifically asking about SaGa lol, I already did my research on Final Fantasy

Im having too much fun playing all the SaGa games! I wish i knew about them sooner!

Man, what a breath of fresh air!

This is the D&D experience I always craved in a RPG, easy to learn, hard to master mechanics, a living breathing world where anything could happen at any moment when to run or when to fight, without hand holding and limitless freedom and possibilities of loot and adventure.

Im happy to be here and hope everyone who has ever thought of buying SaGa really should.

How is the Greatsword in lategame compare to Spear?

I heard it got outperformed by spear back then despite having higher ATK and tech potency because of the 99,999 damage cap per hit while spear got strong 4 hits attack like Spiral Charge a so it can easily bypass the damage cap.

However the dev later nerfed United Ravager ability, is it still possible for Greatsword to reach 99,999 damage cap? If that still the case then would it be better to use the tech like Swallow Reversal instead? Is the gap between Greatsword and Spear still far apart?

Game similar to Last Remnant?

Hello, i know this question has been answered before many times, but the answers i found lacked nuisance a bit. Which game would scratch the unique itch of tLR, if i like it because of:

  1. Controlling squads instead of units (i understand there is nothing like it, so let's ignore it)
  2. Squads moving and interacting in the battlefield (intercepting, raidlocks, flanking, etc)
  3. Characters upgrading "organically". I don't have to choose/unlock their equipment, skills and classes, rather they do so themselves with a little input by me (yes i am lazy, lol)
  4. I kinda also like that i give general commands and can't reliably tell each character what to do during battle, again makes the characters more realistic to me
  5. That there are many options with formations and whatnot, but not sure that is possible if the game has no squads. I mean choosing a formation for your party probably exists in some games, but i don't think it would be the same (?)

Anyway, that's all. I understand SaGa games are probably the highest chance to find my next favorite, but if you happen to know an unrelated game that ticks the above points please say!

People recommended Romancing Saga 2 Remake. Which platform: Switch or PC?

So basically I asked for a JRPG with specific characteristics and Romancing SaGa 2 Remake was a clear great choice for my taste.

However, I'm unsure where to play it.

I have both a decent Pc and a Switch 1.

My PC being a laptop, I can still make use of it's portability. However, the Switch is much more convenient, and I would also appreciate the possibility of having a physical version of the game.

So that said, is the Switch experience much worse?

Thanks!

Our SaGa retrospective podcast finally got through the whole Romancing era, and is now heading into the Frontier games! Check it out!

I don't post every single episode of it on here because I don't want to be that kind of spammy person 😅 but since last time I checked in in here we were just done with the original Game Boy games, us finishing the Romancing trilogy and starting the Frontier games seems like a good point to share again.

I'm especially really happy with how the Frontier episode turned out, so if you like the game maybe give it a listen (we're all pretty enthusiastic about it, it's an absolute joy of a game)

Crystal Wings in 'Tycoon Wil' ?

I've been entering and exiting the area for some time, fighting the early stage enemy encounters and it seems no matter how many polar drakes I fight, Crystal wings just don't seem to drop? Is there another scenario thay has a better chance of them dropping, or is it just an abysmal drop rate and my RNG is awful?

[SF2R] How do you learn spell arts?

I know hybrid arts you can learn in duels, but with spells can you only learn them at the end of the battles? And what do you have to do to trigger them? Just use each component anima once during the battle?
