A comment on my previous post suggested comparing Gai not only with present-day Ryo, but with the young Ryo from the original series — and I think that changes the picture quite a bit.

The adult Ryo is extremely controlled. Young Ryo absolutely wasn't. 😅

And this is where Gai starts looking surprisingly familiar.

1. Impulsivity: act first, think second

Young Ryo was incredibly reactive. When something happened, his first instinct was usually to move, intervene, fight or protect someone. Reflection came afterwards.

Gai often works the same way.

Adult Ryo still seems to have that impulse underneath, but decades of experience have taught him to contain it.

So the progression almost looks like:

Young Ryo → impulse → action → reflection Gai → impulse → action → reflection Adult Ryo → impulse → control → calculated action

Gai therefore sometimes feels less like adult Ryo and more like Ryo before 30–40 years of self-discipline happened to him.

2. Their body language has the same “ready to move” quality

Young Ryo frequently occupied space with an open, forward-oriented posture: weight ready to shift, legs apart, body prepared to react.

Gai often gives me the same impression.

Adult Ryo is much more economical. His movements are smaller and his posture is more contained, but the underlying physical tension is still there.

That could explain why comparing Gai only to present-day Ryo makes some similarities easy to miss.

3. Their faces react before their brains catch up

Young Ryo wasn't particularly good at hiding immediate emotion.

Anger, surprise, worry — you often saw the reaction first.

Gai does this too.

Adult Ryo seems almost like the evolved version of that mechanism. He gets the same stimulus, but there is now a fraction of a second of restraint before anything becomes visible.

Young Ryo/Gai:

stimulus → visible reaction → processing

Adult Ryo:

stimulus → control → minimal visible reaction

4. Their relationship with danger

Young Ryo had a rather spectacular tendency to throw himself directly into dangerous situations.

Not simply because he was brave, but because his protective instinct frequently overrode caution.

Gai appears to have a similar reflex: when somebody else is threatened, his body seems to make the decision before the rest of him does.

Adult Ryo still has that protective instinct, but it has become much more strategic.

Again, same possible foundation — different age and experience.

5. Personal situations break their control

Another interesting similarity is what happens when the danger becomes personal.

Young Ryo could become noticeably more impulsive when someone he cared about was involved.

Gai also seems much more emotionally reactive once a situation stops being abstract and directly involves someone important to him.

That feels more specific than simply saying “both characters are courageous.”

But Gai is NOT Ryo 2.0

There are also obvious differences.

Gai seems more socially expressive, more playful and sometimes more interested in provoking reactions from other people.

Young Ryo was impulsive, but often much more straightforward.

So if the resemblance is intentional, I don't think they're simply copying Ryo's personality onto Gai.

It feels more like they may have reused a behavioural core — impulsiveness, physical protectiveness, immediate emotional reactions — while building a different personality around it.

And then there is Ryusei…

This is where things get messy. 😅

Because Gai also shares things with Ryusei.

But to me the resemblance isn't quite the same.

Gai ↔ Ryusei: energy, spontaneity, expressiveness.

Gai ↔ young Ryo: reaction to danger, protective behaviour, emotional impulsivity and some body-language patterns.

Gai ↔ adult Ryo: the resemblance becomes subtler because Ryo has learned to suppress many of the behaviours that were extremely obvious when he was young.

So right now, my impression is:

Gai resembles young Ryo more strongly than he resembles adult Ryo.

Which makes the earlier comment that these visual similarities are “absolutely intentional” even more intriguing.

Maybe we're not supposed to compare Gai only with the man Ryo is now.

Maybe we're supposed to remember who Ryo used to be. 👀

After comparing a bunch of scenes from Yoroi Shin Den Samurai Troopers, I think the body-language parallel between Gai and Ryo is one of the most interesting things in the visual direction.

At first glance, the obvious connection is the color coding: red clothes, red armor, blue eyes, angular silhouettes. But once you start looking at their posture, gestures, facial expressions and the way they are framed together, it feels much more deliberate than that.

My overall impression is:

Gai externalizes the same kind of energy that Ryo has learned to contain.

1. The reaching-hand shots

This is probably the strongest parallel.

Both characters get a very similar composition: hand pushed toward the viewer, face behind it, direct eye contact.

But the execution is completely different.

Gai throws his whole body into the gesture. He leans forward, his shoulder follows the arm, his hand dominates the foreground and his face is fully expressive.

His body language basically says:

“Come on!”

Ryo reaches out too, but almost everything else remains controlled. His torso stays stable, his shoulders barely move and his expression is much softer.

His version feels more like:

“Take my hand.”

So it is essentially the same gesture, but with two different emotional temperatures.

Gai = impulsive invitation. Ryo = reassuring invitation.

And that is a pattern that keeps coming back.

2. Their anger is surprisingly similar

Put their angry close-ups next to each other and the resemblance becomes much stronger.

Both use the same basic facial language:

• eyebrows pulled sharply inward;
• very focused blue eyes;
• tense jaw;
• teeth visible;
• direct confrontation with whatever is in front of them.

The difference is not really the emotion itself.

It is how quickly the emotion reaches the surface.

With Gai, anger seems to explode straight through his face and body.

With Ryo, it feels compressed first.

Gai looks like:

feel → react

Ryo looks more like:

feel → contain → react

But once Ryo finally loses that containment, the two suddenly look remarkably alike.

That is what makes the comparison interesting to me. They do not seem to have fundamentally different emotional languages.

Ryo simply has a much stronger filter.

3. Gai moves toward things. Ryo lets things come to him.

Another repeated difference is their relationship with physical space.

Gai constantly creates diagonals.

He leans.

He reaches.

He turns his shoulders.

His arms move away from his torso.

Even when he is just standing, his posture often looks like it could turn into movement one frame later.

Ryo is much more vertical.

His shoulders stay centered.

His arms remain closer to his body unless there is a reason to move them.

He can dominate a composition while practically standing still.

So visually:

Gai occupies space through movement.

Ryo occupies space through presence.

That is probably the biggest difference between them.

4. The back-to-back shot says a LOT

The shot of them standing back-to-back is one of my favorites because the composition could easily have been “older warrior protects younger warrior.”

But it isn't.

Neither one is hiding behind the other.

They are covering opposite directions.

Gai's posture feels ready to launch forward. His torso is more open and his expression is active.

Ryo is upright, grounded and much more economical.

So the visual roles become:

Gai = momentum.

Ryo = anchor.

And the fact that they are back-to-back matters.

That pose implies trust: each person is effectively responsible for the other's blind spot.

Visually, Gai is already being treated less like someone Ryo simply has to protect and more like someone who can stand beside him.

5. The meeting-room scene might be even more revealing

There is almost no action in this scene, which makes the body language easier to read.

Ryo is standing slightly apart from everyone else.

One hand is near his chin, his posture is upright and he keeps some physical distance from the table.

He appears to be processing the whole situation.

Gai is sitting with the group and looking toward Ryo.

His body is much more integrated into the shared space.

So the composition almost says:

Gai watches Ryo.

Ryo watches the situation.

That is a very efficient way to show the difference between them.

Gai reacts primarily to people.

Ryo reacts primarily to context.

And yet the red clothing connects them visually across the room. They become the two strongest red points on opposite sides of the composition.

Even when they are physically separated, the framing keeps linking them.

6. Their eye contact works in a similar way

Both characters are very direct visually.

When they confront something, neither is usually drawn avoiding it.

Their eyes lock onto the target.

But Gai often moves his head and body with his gaze.

Ryo can communicate the same intensity with almost nothing except his eyes.

Again:

Gai expresses with the whole body.

Ryo expresses with minimum movement.

That does not make Ryo less emotional.

If anything, it makes the small changes in his expression more noticeable.

7. Even their neutral standing poses tell the same story

Look at their civilian character sheets.

Gai's pose is loose and asymmetric.

One arm moves outward, his stance feels casual and his entire silhouette looks slightly unstable in a good way — like he could start walking at any moment.

Ryo is almost a vertical column.

His shoulders are centered, his weight looks evenly distributed and his whole body feels grounded.

Even when neither is doing anything:

Gai looks ready to move.

Ryo looks difficult to move.

That distinction is incredibly consistent.

8. Their clothing reinforces it

Their civilian costumes actually help sell the body language.

Gai's clothes feel light, youthful and mobile. The jacket, jeans and sneakers all work with his loose posture.

Ryo's jacket has much stronger structural lines around the shoulders and torso.

It visually contains him.

Gai's clothing follows movement.

Ryo's clothing frames the body.

Small character-design decision, but it really works.

9. The armor designs exaggerate their personalities

The same thing happens once the armor comes on.

Gai's silhouette pushes outward.

Big shoulders, spikes, aggressive angles, shapes that extend away from the central body.

It is basically his civilian body language translated into armor.

His energy goes outward.

Ryo's designs feel much more centered and vertically organized.

Even when his armor gets huge or elaborate, your eye tends to return to the central axis: head, chest, torso.

Some versions make him look almost architectural.

And the more imposing forms push him toward an authority figure rather than pure forward momentum.

So if I had to reduce the armor language to one sentence:

Gai looks like something being launched.

Ryo looks like something you have to get past.

10. Their centers of gravity are different

This is a smaller detail, but I think it matters.

Gai often looks as though his weight could shift immediately.

One leg, one shoulder, one movement and he is gone.

Ryo usually looks much more evenly planted.

His feet and legs read like anchors.

That is probably part of why Ryo can appear physically imposing without constantly being animated as physically aggressive.

The impression of strength comes from stability.

11. But they still share the same visual grammar

And this is why I don't think the series is simply presenting them as opposites.

They share too many basic visual traits:

• red as their dominant character color;
• striking blue eyes;
• angular silhouettes;
• strong shoulders;
• direct eye contact;
• confrontational posture;
• similar facial construction when emotions become intense;
• repeated framing that places them as two visual poles.

So Gai doesn't feel like a character designed from a completely different template.

He feels like a variation on the same template.

12. Which brings me to the age difference

The more I compare them, the more Gai feels like a version of this personality before it has been fully disciplined.

Gai tends to operate like:

feel → show → act

Ryo tends to operate like:

feel → contain → assess → act

That does not necessarily mean Gai will “become Ryo.”

Their personalities are still distinct.

But visually, it creates a very interesting generational parallel.

Because whenever Ryo's self-control disappears — particularly when he gets angry — the gap between them suddenly becomes much smaller.

The underlying intensity was apparently there all along.

13. Their relationship is also reflected in the framing

Something else I noticed: the show does not constantly frame Gai as physically subordinate to Ryo.

There are plenty of ways animation can visually establish a strict master/student hierarchy:

older character in front, younger character behind;

older character elevated, younger one looking upward;

older character protecting, younger character sheltered.

But several of these shots don't do that.

Instead, Ryo and Gai are repeatedly placed:

opposite each other, on either side of a composition, or back-to-back.

That gives Ryo authority without visually shrinking Gai.

The relationship feels less like:

“Ryo acts, Gai follows.”

and increasingly like:

“Ryo and Gai occupy different roles inside the same confrontation.”

My overall reading

If I had to summarize all these images:

Gai and Ryo seem to speak the same physical language at different volumes.

Gai is expansive.

Ryo is concentrated.

Gai creates movement.

Ryo creates stability.

Gai pushes outward.

Ryo hold the center.

And when they're put together, those differences actually make the visual resemblance stronger rather than weaker.

The back-to-back shot probably summarizes the whole thing best:

Gai pushes the movement forward. Ryo make sure it doesn't get pushed backward.

I really wonder how intentional this is on Sunrise's part, because once I noticed it, I started seeing the Gai/Ryo parallel everywhere.

Does anyone else read their body language this way?

Looking at the officials characters art for Ryūsei, Shion and Seiji, I noticed something in their body language.

Ryūsei and Seiji both extend their left arm outward, with the hand lowered and relatively open. The poses aren't identical, but visually they clearly echo each other. Shion is completely different: his left hand is placed on his hip and his posture is much more centered and self-contained.

So we basically get: Ryūsei → open left side / outward gesture Shion → closed, centered posture Seiji → open left side / outward gesture

What makes Seiji particularly interesting is the contrast between his open left hand and his closed right fist — almost an “open/closed” duality in the same pose.

It might simply be character-design language, but with how much symbolism seems to be hidden in the new series, I wonder if these poses are telling us something about their affinities or roles.

Especially Shion, who once again seems to be deliberately positioned as the odd one out. Am I overthinking the official art, or do you see the Ryūsei/Seiji parallel too?

Following the comments on my previous post, I went back and looked at the official character poses more closely.

And actually, I think the comparison with Ryo is worth noting.

Ryusei and Ryo have a very similar overall construction to their pose: the body is slightly asymmetrical, one side is more closed while the other arm hangs away from the body, with an open and relaxed hand. It almost looks like an imperfect mirror pose.

With Seiji, the similarity is different. Ryusei and Seiji mainly share the gesture of the lowered open hand and the position of the fingers. But Seiji's posture is much more frontal, straight and composed, while both Ryo and Ryusei have a more casual, slightly off-centre stance.

So, based only on these character sheets, I would actually say:

- Ryo ↔ Ryusei: strong similarity in the overall pose and silhouette

• Ryusei ↔ Seiji: similarity mainly in the hand gesture
• Ryo ↔ Seiji: much less obvious

Does it mean anything? Maybe not. Character sheets can simply reuse visual conventions. But if the same gestures start appearing repeatedly in animated scenes, especially in comparable situations, then I think it becomes more interesting than a single similar pose.

Syeok — whoever pointed out the Ryo/Ryusei resemblance made me go back and look again. 😄

Now I'm curious: do you see Ryusei as visually echoing Ryo most than Seiji?

Yesterday was Gai’s birthday, so I whipped up a quick drawing. It's not very good, especially compared to all the other great birthday illustrations out there for him, but I had fun making it anyway! I messed up his teeth though so I tried to hide it a little. lol I might try to fix it and add additional details later.

In the midst of everyone's grief, Gai visits Nasti for advice and learns that Shion visited her.

What was so important that Shion spoke to with Nasti?

And what is the answer Gai choses to stand and fight again...

You cannot convince me Shion is dead when his color is purple like the Armor of Darkness, we still don't know what he discovered about the elements, why he was chosen as an initiate, and HOW CONVENIENT IT IS EVERYONE IS AN ORPHAN AND THUS CAN BE THROWN TO THE MEAT GRINDER TO DIE.!<
