Photos: How San Francisco drag became a force for art, activism and Pride
San Francisco has been an epicenter of drag for nearly a century — and it’s never just been about entertainment.
Since the early 1930s founding of Finocchio’s, one of the first above-ground “female impersonation” clubs in the city, to today’s gender-transgressive performers, the art form has blazed a defiant, sequined path in the Bay Area.
Drag’s political edge sharpened when Jose Sarria created San Francisco’s Imperial Court in 1965, a milestone that followed his groundbreaking 1961 campaign for San Francisco Board of Supervisors as the first openly gay candidate.
